I will second the Farmer's Market theory, but as you mentioned it depends on where you live. I am in a 4-months of summer Canadian city and often times the Farmer's markets are more expensive than our box grocery stores, and the produce is from just as far away. However, two great things about our local markets is the Hutterite products (eggs and honey) and if you go at the end of the day you can get more for less since they often don't want to pack it up :)
