Thank you! That was a very informative link.

A survey I put together to see what people think about our first babies name. by EdocKrowin SampleSize

[–]istara 0 points1 point ago

There was some interesting ones, some meh ones, and some awful ones. I tend to like unusual names, particularly if they have some kind of classical heritage (Vergil, Nero).

Some of them (Shayde) were unbearable though.

I'd like to see less of the hokey shit, I just don't think it should be pinned up on the same wall of shame (supposedly) used for actual race hate, misogyny, abuse.

Someone saying a girl "asked for it" because she wore a short skirt, that should be SRS material. Someone making a dumb "make me a sandwich" comment - that's a rolleye and a downvote, but not really worthy of much else.

You got your Danegeld, now good riddance ;)

(I had Danish bosses and colleagues a while back. I continually requested to be compensated for the danegeld given their ancestors ravaged us anyway, but they would not pay up).

And I simply cannot bring myself to believe that we were, given the total and utter lack of any credible scientific evidence, let alone proof, of such a thing.

I'm completely open to receiving that proof one day and changing my opinion. Until then, I'm not going to base my life or beliefs on the pointless fantasy concept of alien "multi dimensional" experiments, whatever the hell that means.

Photoshop Request by Kykykzin AskReddit

Here's the first one, with levels adjusted and red eye fixed for good measure. (It needed a crop, by the way, not a shop).

I'm not touching the others. If you/that guy is fucking idiotic enough to be smoking, in the year 2012, you can suck it up or go and buy your own copy of Photoshop.

I think this is the wrong subreddit, there are subreddits for depression etc that will be more helpful and more sympathetic.

I had read that it was initially hard to do so, though I couldn't quite understand why. Was it too expensive to borrow?

Short selling seems to be increasing though.

No. I've never found them particularly cute compared to baby animals, which make me melt. Since having a baby I can appreciate other people's more, but they still don't make me squee in the way that most of /r/aww does.

You know I think you're right, I fell for that, but it was so ridiculous that a false flag seems more credible.

My wife is going crazy. I don't know what to do. by jbtrumpsin Parenting

Vent all you like! Blowing off steam on here is a great way to deal with it, if it reduces your stress.

I agree with others that he may just be a "high needs" baby.

But I do think you should see lactation consultants.

Around 6-8 weeks is one hell of a growth spurt, I nearly had a breakdown as I was struggling with supply, but it all gradually came together.

My only off-the-wall suggestion might be to occasionally try a nipple shield to give your wife's nipples a break (if they're sore, as I imagine they must be!) as maybe that will help him transition to a pacifier if she can't keep up this level of nursing.

I also suggest they lie down and nurse if they're not already. He may fall asleep more easily and she may be able to doze a bit.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Everything started turning around for me from about eight weeks. From about eight weeks to twelve weeks their latch and suck gets stronger, which helps with feeding. Also, supply switches from being hormone-driven to demand-driven, so will better match his needs. And his current growth spurt should ease.

My concern is that this woman is already suffering being shacked up with an asshole and may be living in fear of losing her baby or her home. It certainly sounds like she could use support.

That said, the early weeks are so stressful that he may have been blowing off steam to you. I think I would try and pop round with a baby gift to get a closer look at the situation, then make a decision.

Doctors should report if there are concerns but they don't always. However newborns do end up needing hospital treatment, and many of them have weight gain issues even with the most concerned and caring parents following all medical advice.

Opinions on boys/girls sharing a bedroom while young? by jarbamarbiein Parenting

[–]istara 0 points1 point ago

My concern is that this will only be a temporary solution unless you plan to move house again at some point. Mixed gender kids are supposed to have separate accommodation by a certain age.

Your problem here is really that you need playing space for the children, not sleeping space. That also doesn't need to be in their bedroom.

Is there an option to create them a separate playroom, perhaps in the garage, or even creating one in the attic or something?

Otherwise your solution might work, I'm not sure. I kind of need to see the house layout! Another option, depending where you live, might be to create a kind of "sunroom" extension into the garden, for a playroom.

As cold as this sounds, your brothers problems are over. You'll be wracked with guilt over not getting to say goodbye properly.

It doesn't sound cold, it sounds true.

And the "I never said I loved him" stuff - that doesn't matter. It's not the one last time you spoke with someone that defines your relationship, it's the love they surely knew from you over the years.

[–]istara 3 points4 points ago

I think there is too much focus on whether or not these people are ignorant.

Having lived somewhere that fanatical, unquestioning belief is a norm for many people, I would say that arrogance is a key character trait that needs to be considered.

That doesn't mean we should handle it any less tactfully. But it helps us understand why seemingly highly educated, intelligent people grip to absurd, unprovable, even harmful beliefs and ideas:

  • a sense of superiority in knowing/"perceiving" something others don't
  • a sense of pride at being "one of the chosen"
  • a refusal to question based on arrogance

That's the pattern I see. Because ignorant, suggestible people should also be suggestible to other viewpoints. The issue with many religious fanatics is that they're not.

ie: it's not that they're stupid, it's that they think they're right.

Of course, you're an SRSer so I expect there will be a post about how I'm a child molester shortly.

Haha - I had that yesterday - and not only was the girl 16, but she was of legal age of consent in her state.

Yet despite this, me refusing to brand her affair with a married man as "rape" got me SRS-ed ;)

The lawyer in fact had an ethical duty to do so.

The timing is problematic, but you certainly cannot defend a client that you know is guilty, except in mitigation. You have to pass the case on if they confess to you, or convince them to plead guilty.
