TROPHY CASE

Chief Inspector: "we have 32,000 in our gang. It's called the Metropolitan Police." by brunt2in unitedkingdom

[–]intangible-tangerine 3 points4 points ago

The really obvious question is 'have your dealings with the police involved the MET?' I know lots of people who've lived in London and elsewhere and they invariably describe the MET as being racist, violent, corrupt etc. but have fair to high regard for UK police forces in other areas.

Argentina to raise Falklands UK 'militarisation' at UN by AceCakein worldnews

[–]intangible-tangerine 6 points7 points ago

Argentina's objection to British navy ships being in the area reminds me of the famous quote supposedly uttered by the Queen when Spain objected to Charles and Diana going making a honeymoon cruise stop at Gibraltar.

'It's my son, my ship and my Island'

Replace 'son' with 'grandson' and I think the same applies here re William's helicopter rescue pilot posting.

Saudi Arabia Promises To Go Nuclear if Iran Does by Ze_Cariocain worldnews

[–]intangible-tangerine 26 points27 points ago

Just because the Saudi gov. is theocratic doesn't mean it's got a death wish to bring about the apocalypse. They're a very prosperous and powerful nation, their interests lie with regional peace and stability.

There's nothing in the article that implies this uses much time or money at all.

TIL that in England, if you reach your 100th birthday or 60th wedding anniversary, you get a personalized card from the Queen mailed to you. by Smurfykattin todayilearned

It used to be a telegram, maybe by the time any of us twentysomethings get to that age it'll be a hologram from the robot overlord, that'd be nice.

TIL If you find $5 Million worth of Saxon Treasure the Queen of England will steal it from you by delrondin todayilearned

[–]intangible-tangerine 31 points32 points ago

When it goes 'to the crown' it's not going to the Queen personally it's going to the nation. The act is so that objects of great historic importance vis-a-vis our national heritage don't just wind up being sold abroad or hidden in private collections. The act is so that that stuff ends up in museums where it can be publicly displayed and researched properly.

TIL there is a Liberian Warlord named General Butt Naked and the Butt Naked Brigade. by Scriptusin todayilearned

Interesting that it's 'butt' naked rather than 'buck' naked.

First time I stood up for myself this weekend. Turned single in the process, but I'm proud of myself. by LoveLifeTreesin trees

Or it could be that she's the person closest to him and she can perceive effects it's having on his personality and mood that he can't.

A small minority of people react very badly to trees - it can trigger psychosis - seen it happen -not pleasant. So because there are real risks, you should never treat it like it's just candy, it's a drug (a usually awesome fun one) but a drug with side effects nonetheless. Rather than being so unconcerned about her concerns and defensive the OP should at least have a sensible conversation with her. If she's tolerated him smoking for two years it's probably not the weed she has a problem with, it's more likely some effect it's having on him. It may just be something as seemingly minor as him wanting a much quieter social life than she does. Weed is has a huge impact on lifestyle - so yeah, actually it is a matter for debate in a relationship, same as getting a pet or going to church together etc. would be.

Linguistic survey: 'Tag questions' of the United Kingdom (Only two questions, please only UK residents) by Lorgramothin linguistics

[–]intangible-tangerine 2 points3 points ago

I think a bigger issue would be false reporting, in that lots of people will tell you they only say 'isn't it' but you will catch them saying 'innit' in real life conversations.

Week #6: What are you reading? by the_slum_inside_youin 52book

[–]intangible-tangerine 0 points1 point ago

Just (30 mins to midnight my time) finished C.S Lewis' 'Perelandra' (had to read a draft novel as well which doesn't really count but it was quite long and took loads of time as I was very-close reading for critiquing purposes arg.)

Perelandra I liked up to a point, C.S Lewis spins a good yarn and pre-space-race sci-fi is always fun, but the thinly veiled Christian evangelising wore very thin.

Next some non fiction. Musicophilia by Oliver sachs : )

UK's Advertising Standards Authority bans ads claiming prayer can heal on the grounds they give false hope by essjay2009in skeptic

[–]intangible-tangerine 0 points1 point ago

Not sure if you're making fun of the headline, but if you bother to follow the link it's to the 'more or less' discussion this week on population statistics and the difficulties of measuring them over very long expanses of time (when do you say the first 'humans' arrived, how do you guesstimate populations for past societies that left no written records etc.)

Political campaigns in the UK are regulated by the electoral commission, they have stricter rules and more powers than the ASA.

Ridley Walker - Russell Hoban. It's a 'cult' classic YA book about a post-nuclear war England, wonderfully written and deserves to be much better known.

WhatIf a scientist with much of Issac Newton's ideas came into prominence during Augustus' reign? by Shruggermanin HistoricalWhatIf

[–]intangible-tangerine 2 points3 points ago

Isaac Newton himself said that he 'stood on the shoulders of giants' http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton if someone of Newton's brilliance had been around during Augustus' reign he still wouldn't have come up with the same ideas because the ground work hadn't been done.

TIL that King Tut is related to over 50% of European men but only 1% of Egyptians by defconzeroin todayilearned

[–]intangible-tangerine 31 points32 points ago

The current majority Arab population of Egypt are recent arrivals, they came in the 7th c. A.D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_conquest_of_Egypt the Coptic community is descended from the ancient Egyptians, in fact the nearly extinct coptic language is directly descended from ancient Egyptian, but it stands to reason that there will have been a lot of mixing in the intervening centuries.

Feel as a Britisher I should point out that we also have the phrase 'America is the armed wing of the British Empire' which refers to the fact that often American and British military objectives have been aligned.

Is whale sperm any bigger than human sperm? by Note_itin askscience

[–]intangible-tangerine 14 points15 points ago

It's the yolk that's the single cell, at least prior to fertilisation, the yolk is what's made in the bird's ovary (or whatever the avian term is) and the white and the shell is added later as it travels through the reproductive tract
