Best post in this whole thread. Really good, coherent explanation. I lived in the UAE for 8 years and they really are shrewd businessmen. They had a vision of how the country will look in 2010 and its pretty much bang on, except for a few thing here and there due to the unexpected recession.

Certainly true. For a while Abu dhabi has been the little brother behind Dubai but now it seems fortunes have changed. I lived in Dubai for 8 years and the changes across the countries have been remarkable.

Business in the UAE is different, as bobosuda said. Source - I lived there for 18 years. Most of the countrys biggest business are run by wealthy local families. Usually the kids each get their own business and they are usually quite diverse - retail, banking, insurance, auto etc. I do agree that this deal looks 'convenient' and is exploiting a loophole but Ettihad is becoming one of the fastest growing airlines and they have pumped a lot of investment in to it.

I've been looking for a graduate job recently and have discovered the golden rules to securing yourself a position. by lugubriosityin unitedkingdom

[–]inshallah13 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I've had quite a few applications rejected within a few days and I'm sure that most of these companies would just put me onto the next stage to do online psychometrical/analytical tests or whatever since I've got experience and my application is quite good (considering the places I did get called for interviews). At one big FMCG company I got through to the 3rd stage - telephone interview and as I was arranging a time/date for it they realised I was a non-EU national and said they had to withdraw my application. Extremely annoying after you've spent 3 hours doing the application and essay questions and 3 online tests of 45mins each!

Nope I'm not sponsored in anyway. My family has paid for my tuition though I have been assisted by scholarship (25% fee reduction) and bursaries from my uni. I'm from India so there are more than enough of us to worry about a brain drain so to say. More than the actual work/ professional aspect of it I am more dreading the lifestyle I will have to go back to. I've never lived in India though I have been back regularly. I grew in the Middle East and studied in a British School and now I am at uni here. Going from 4 years of living by yourself in an environment like this to living with my grandparents unsure of if I'll get a job is not something I had expected! Also from what I have seen so far having studied in England has posed difficulties with trying to get a job in India, even at major international companies. In the UK by getting onto a grad scheme you are placed into a position where you can accelerate your career growth but in India you are placed into what I call a 'drone pool', filled with extremely competent workers but no potential to lead or manage a team etc. I know I have those skills so I don't want to become a drone!

Yes I'm a non-EU national so will have to be sponsored under Tier 2. The rules changed last month. Previously I could have applied for a Post Study Worker (PSW) visa after I had graduated and allowed to stay/work for 2 years in the UK without any employee sponsorship. Now I'll have to be sponsored straight away so it is a much bigger investment for any company, especially for employing a fresh graduate. I know there's no one really to blame (except the government) but it generally sucks!

3) Don't be foreign.

I'll be graduating in engineering with a good degree from a top uni, have 2 excellent internships/placements. I have been to the final assessment centre/interview stage at 4 top engineering companies but not made the cut and I am 90% sure it is because of my nationality. Just my luck that the immigration rules changed the year I need it!

Hi Coach, thanks for doing this. I don't know if you are aware but American Football is a growing sport in Europe. I have just finished my last season (graduating) playing at one of the top teams in the league. Here is our last game - National Semi Finals which we lost. Out university league has some 70 teams though there are big gaps in quality! The coaching staff we have here are excellent and extremely enthusiastic, they are 99% voluntary unpaid positions who coach for the love of the game. I know a couple of the coaches are making a trip to the US over the summer to visit some colleges and learn. Would you (or Washington State) be able help them out? Would be great for the sport and an awesome opportunity.

I haven't watched the USC-Texas game since I only learnt about the game when I moved to the US in the 07 season. I've had a youtube copy of it bookmarked for over a year but never watched it. Guess I'll watch it sometime this week.

How would you compare the India you saw to the India now in terms of the people? Did you think that in the future the country would be what it is now? Where were you based in India? Did you know my grandfather - he was a prominent mason in Mysore but passed away before I was born, some 25 or 30 years ago.
