Nightlife at Harbourfront could fall victim to whining locals by quelarin toronto

[–]inkit 1 point2 points ago

It's only going to get worst as the number of condos downtown keeps on going up. The entertainment district also met its match as more and more people started moving into lofts built on top of commercial spaces. Personally I don't see the appeal for most of these over priced shoe boxes where you have to pay a $0.60-$0.75 /sq. ft. just because there's an espresso maker in the lobby and a 'gym' with 5 machines.

Teksavvy is increasing their rates on Feb 1st due to the recent CRTC hearings. by billybobmacin canada

[–]inkit 1 point2 points ago

If this is how Rogers is trying to win back customers, good luck: 24Mbps for $29 for 6 months if you sign a 1-year contract. That's not the worst part. It's the 100Gig cap that kills me. What a bunch of horse shit. What the fuck is wrong with this company?

Not only do I get more for less with TekSavvy I don't get poked every other day to sign-up for other services that I don't need. I'm more than willing to pay extra for my unlimited plan with TekSavvy if it's going to help them stick it to Rogers in court for not cooperating to solve technical issues.

How many freaking times do we have to remind advocates of UBB that data coming through the wires is NOT a commodity like water/gas/electricity.

Here it is one more time (the dumb-down version):

Bandwidth = size of a pipe (owned by ISP) Data = what goes through the pipe (NOT owned by the ISP*)

  • most of the time

We pay ISPs to maintain the 'pipes' and make sure they are big enough for us to get as much data as we want at a reasonable speed (see congestion below). You can't charge for something that you don't own [data] and ISPs shouldn't care what it is that you're dl/ul (throttling).

But, congestion is a problem and the ISPs just don't seem to have/want the resources to fix it. My bandwidth drops down to 2-5 Mb/s after 6PM from 45-50 Mb/s during the day. I'm with TSI. I'm not expecting anything ground breaking in tomorrow's announcement.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's now Day 5 and the start of a work week where I rely on the internet to make money and pay my rent. After a third call to TSI, they still say it's a POI issue & Rogers says that I DO have an IP. If I do a traceroute on that IP I end up at a TSI owned IP which means this problem has to be solved by TSI, not Rogers. The York Mills POI is the one that's down. At least one of them.

As much as I like TSI, making a living will trump Cost+no data cap plans offered. I'm going to wait another 24 hours and then sign-up with Rogers again. They have an offer right now that gives new customers 50% off on the first year if you sign-up for a 2-year contract.

Since I switched to TSI [CABLE] almost a year ago, I've had no complaints. It's been rock solid. This is the first time that I've experienced an outage so I'm going to wait until Monday. Maybe even Tuesday to see if anything has changed. If it wasn't for my tethering plan with Fido, I would have switched back to Rogers already. For me, the #1 reason for switching to TSI was the no-limit data cap. The lower price was just a bonus.

Agree with some of the things you said, but Veal/Foie Gras/Lamb all come from animals where the rest of the body is also used for food. We can't say the same thing for shark fin fishing. Personally, I hate wasting food. I can't even say let's continue the shark finning in moderation because it's so tasty—it's not—but that's a subjective reason.

But, I can see why some people will protest this ban. It has very deep cultural roots in the Chinese community, going back a few hundred years. So, it's easy to take it personally. Some would use the argument of this ban as being an attack on their cultural heritage, where the real reason is them protecting their business from losing money.

Thanks for that. Apparently, during filming, people threatened Ramsey and the crew with guns while in Costa Rica. Scroll down to read the section under "Gordon Ramsay Incident".

I also recommend anyone who's interested to learn more about Sharks, watch Sharkwater. That's a great documentary as well.

[EDIT: "Sharkwater" is not just about Shark Finning]

Shhh... don't mention the "R" word. City officials might go loopy and cancel it next year. I vote for more cars with bigger speakers.

Around 12:30 AM, Yonge & Dundas was practically run over by a mob of people following a car going east bound on Dundas. It was blasting dance music with these 2 giant speakers on the back. It was sort of like a mini Love Parade on a budget. For a few minutes it seemed very chaotic as an Ambulance tried to make it through that intersection, sirens blasting away. Anyways, that 'exhibit' pretty much would close any major intersection as it was making its way East.

The coolest exhibit was by far was "The Heart Machine".

Inspired by Fritz Lang’s film, Metropolis, The Heart Machine serves as an interactive metaphor between citizen and city, citizens and technology.

I was impressed with the entire setup and the fact that they brought all that sand in to hide all the cables/pipes. But I'm not sure what people had to do with the touch sensitive panels in order for the giant flames to shoot up and warm everybody nearby.

EDIT: Yonge & Dundas, not Yonge & Yonge.

B.C. woman sues adult kids for parental support by krunchy71in canada

Some of the comments in the story really annoy me. Like this one: "It is not your kids fault that you didn't plan well enough for your retirement. They did not ask you to have them. It is your fault that your kids don't want to help you out. ". It's narrow minded and in poor judgement. My parents gave up everything to bring my brother & I here 20+ years ago with $200 in their pockets. Obviously, they couldn't save for retirement because they had to work their asses off to see us through University. Now, because of all the hard work, we are all comfortably living in this great country. No, we don't need a law that forces us to care for our parents. It's common sense to do it in the first place because most parents deserve our love and care.

The delivery of all his lines in that accent alone is gold coming from someone born in New Jersey. The screen writers are doing a fantastic job with his dialogue.

It would be difficult to enforce, but, I'm +1 on a licensing system for cyclists who are couriers/messengers. They use the roads to do business, while all the drivers pay for those roads. It's only fair.

Holy "Kiss-of-Death" Batman! Restaurant Makeover may make for good TV, but for at least 30 of their projects, it didn't help enough. by wazzel2uin canada

Out of 91 restaurants, it's a gamble that has almost a 70% chance of success and you just need $15K to play. That's not bad for a restaurant that's already failing due to a variety of factors. It's still amazing that they do these make-overs in less than a week. Some of these projects can take months to complete with triple the budget. [EDIT: wording changed]

[TekSavvy] Download speeds well above the 15Mb/s limit, consistently. by Whellowin toronto

[–]inkit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TekSaavy cable with Extreme package here (Yonge/Eglinton): During the day I get on average 30-35 Mbps with a Motorolla DOCSIS 3.0 SB6120. Yes. Average! That's the good news. The bad news is that after 5P the average drops down to 3-8 Mbps. Since I work from home, that's not so bad. My torrents usually pick up speed after midnight and all is well. But it really sucks when we try to use Netflix between 5P and midnight. I was told that the high bandwidth during the day is because of the Rogers Speedboost 'technology' which I guess is available by default to TekSaavy customers—who are in certain tiers. I guess the advertised 15 Mbps bandwidth from TekSaavy is the daily AVERAGE.
