TROPHY CASE

It's legal armageddon as NBC, CBS and Fox all sue Dish Network over its new DVR feature allowing users to automatically skip ads, and in response, Dish sues them right back -- and adds in ABC for good measure. by PrettyBoyFloydin entertainment

They really aren't. Buying a show a foreign network is producing isn't a big risk. Neither is reviving a cult series with a devoted fanbase when you've got years of DVD and streaming viewership numbers to back up your purchase.

Netflix may never be in a position to take a real risk and greenlight something like Lost, Glee, or Mad Men - something drastically different from everything else on TV, the kind of thing that spawns imitators and changes the TV landscape when it succeeds. Everything Netflix has announced so far is backed by big names, and the risk is mitigated by selling international TV rights.

Doonesbury took a brave direction in 2004 during the Iraq war: It later followed this character through depression, rehab, rehabilitation...let's hear it for Garry Trudeau by Spacelabin comics

[–]imdwalrus 0 points1 point ago

So Doonesbury "ripped off" Hunter S. Thompson because a comic strip that's been making fun of politics, culture and society for decades based a character off of a well-known figure thirty years ago? A character that's grown and changed to the point where he barely resembles Thompson at all any more?

You're an idiot.

wut

Netflix has a total of five original shows coming out in the next year, at least one of which (Lilyhammer) is a Norwegian show Netflix is just reairing. Depending on the day of the week, network TV airs that many shows a night and has at least that many premieres per season, usually more.

Saying Netflix has original programming is technically true, but it can't even begin to compete with what the networks can do.

I think they're arguing that adding that information to the show is illegally modifying it?

I sure hope not, because it wouldn't be too hard to figure out where commercials begin. Show fades to black, little logo in the corner disappears, volume jumps when the ad starts - boom, you've got yourself a commercial break.

This paves the way for NBC et al to figure out ways to embed commercials in other ways ( annoying product placements, etc).

Like the blatant Subway product placement they've been doing in Chuck and Community for years?

Like we need another reason to think this guy sucks: An Open Letter to Jay Leno by DoublePlusGoodGamesin entertainment

[–]imdwalrus 0 points1 point ago

I think you might, because in 2009 Travis called me about it. He was in a frenzy and needed to know if I’d seen your show that night...

...

Anyway, it was a good laugh for Travis and I, but we forgot all about it a few weeks later. End of story, right? Apparently not, Mr. Leno.

If this happened three years ago, why is he just writing about it now?

I got my first piece of hockey merch today, and I am so excited. What was the first thing you ever bought to support your team? by Megerdoodlesin hockey

Nah, just ignore him. Things look promising so far:

The sale isn't over yet, but the team isn't going to be leaving Phoenix just yet.

I know its a little late for this year, but I will be ready for next year!

So I take it you're a new fan, then? You definitely picked a good year to start, since the Coyotes did so well and might finally have the owner situation worked out.

or at least one playoff game

That part is wrong. It's one playoff game in the finals.

This spares me the internal conflict of wanting to purchase an EA game. Still, it would have been cool for No. 13 to be on NHL 13... by SoCalWingFanin hockey

[–]imdwalrus -1 points0 points ago

No, but I still wish Datsyuk would get the recognition. The Wings have never had a solo cover in the NHL game series - Yzerman was on NHL '96, but he shared it with Scott Gomez. Why not give the cover to someone like Lidstrom or Brodeur?

Also: since 1996, Colorado, Chicago, Tampa Bay, and Calgary have all had the cover of the game twice.

Amazon announces that it has reached a licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures that will enable Prime Instant Video customers in the U.S. to stream hundreds of new hit movies over the next three years. by PrettyBoyFloydin entertainment

On the other hand, if you have an iPad already - which does have a free Kindle app - how likely are you to buy a Kindle Fire anyway?

Might as well make an iPad app for Amazon Video and get people to subscribe to the Amazon Prime/Amazon Video combo instead.

And to think I'm excited when I find an album from the 90s I've been wanting...

Personal favorite find: a Steve Yzerman Red Wings jersey, bought for $3.50...on the afternoon that the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 2008. The jersey itself would've been enough to make me happy, but getting it on that particular day... :D

> Fans fuming over CBC 'girl talk' hockey coverage by stormdemin hockey

So...people are outraged because CBC is streaming a second, optional audio channel online?

It really doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. If you think it's stupid, then don't listen.

Did CBC also blow it on showing the game winning goal? by glodimein hockey

[–]imdwalrus 1 point2 points ago

CBC showed the goal, if memory serves.

NBC is just bad at hockey. The camera angles, the commentators, cramming in commercials that cut into the game...they are not doing a good job of covering the sport.

Dodgers president trying to bring the Winter Classic to LA? by snappyjin hockey

[–]imdwalrus 1 point2 points ago

The Vegas game in 1991 was in the preseason, and the temp was in the 80's! I don't remember what the ice condition was for that game, but I imagine it couldn't have been great.

Well...

By game time the ice was fine, but other problems “jumped” in to the picture.

“There were these big giant grasshoppers jumping on the ice” said Kings President of Business Operations and former player Luc Robitaille. “They would land on the ice and freeze right there, so by the end of the second period they were everywhere on the ice and it was kind of funny.”

Fox, watching from the broadcast area, will never forget watching bugs litter the ice.

“If you looked directly down you would see hundreds of bugs. The bugs had fallen and either died or drowned from the water that was being put on the ice. So that was the weirdest part of that game, and I think most everyone remembers that.”

By this time in TDK's marketing, everyone was already on-board with Heath's casting

By this time in The Dark Knight's marketing, Heath Ledger was dead - he died the January before the movie came out. The two situations aren't really comparable. I still think that Ledger's performance would have gotten a positive reaction, but it's impossible to say because his death pushed the movie into a unique kind of event status that I haven't seen before or sense.

He gets so lost in an obscure anecdote that he forgets he's calling a game.

I'm with you there. It seems like NBC's announcers seem to prefer telling random stories to actually paying attention to the game.
