TROPHY CASE

the tf2 economy is fucked, here is why by The_Man_with_No_Namein tf2trade

Unless I'm missing something too, I think all it'd do is make backpack expanders less useful.

'Awake' might be the most intriguing concept for a new show in a while. Hopefully it lives up to its premise. by kristovaherin entertainment

Or, it'll get dragged out until it's way, way past any point the initial premise could have supported.

Let's Discuss: With THQ's failure of the UDraw tablet... does that mean we'll never see another Mario Paint? by Minifig81in truegaming

[–]imdwalrus 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. The controllers for Wii U would be perfect for a Mario Paint revival, most likely as either a pack-in or a downloadable title. I think that an actual revival of Mario Paint is highly dependent on not needing to buy extra hardware. UDraw failed because it was an expensive accessory that had limited usefulness. If your console already came with everything you needed...

Honestly, if Nintendo released the same title with a way to export your creations via the internet, that alone would probably make it a success.

Did you seriously expect an answer to that question? I don't think I know anyone - famous or not - who would reply to that kind of accusation from random strangers online.

So my brother outsourced his new music video to Bangalore, India. This is what he got back. by BlueAirplanein Music

[–]imdwalrus 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough. :)

I've just gotten used to people dismissing iTunes as a knee-jerk reaction. At this point, the services are more or less equal. I don't really care where my music comes from, though I'll usually buy from Amazon because they tend to have lower prices.

What's wrong with iTunes?

No DRM, same bitrate as the others, and M4A will play on almost anything these days.

The missed potential of r/gaming by Drewxin truegaming

[–]imdwalrus 0 points1 point ago

Considering that it just came out last month, it could very well be the third most-played game.

I suppose it could be, but I still find it hard to believe that a niche genre title with limited replay would be more popular than League of Legends, either Starcraft, or TF2.

Oh god, yes. The extra speed makes it easier to puff, and the lack of a decent melee weapon makes it crucial to sting.

The ARG probably would have been more successful if the indie bundle hadn't cost so much. I think the price was around $40 - as good as the games that were included were, I couldn't justify spending that much.

The missed potential of r/gaming by Drewxin truegaming

[–]imdwalrus -1 points0 points ago

I don't subscribe to /r/gaming but I'm pleasantly surprised that Katawa Shoujo was really well received there. It's absolutely fantastic, and I do feel like the OP of that post probably never played it if he feels that it doesn't deserve such a spot.

Regardless of the game's quality, can we at least agree that it's probably not the third most-played game on Reddit? I think that's the point he was trying to make.

The missed potential of r/gaming by Drewxin truegaming

[–]imdwalrus 5 points6 points ago

You're right, but r/gaming is probably the poster child for that symptom. The front page for the subreddit is 90% imgur and YouTube links, and (outside of the Steam sale threads, which are still useful) I can't remember the last time I saw useful content there.

I finally unsubscribed a few months back. I got sick of too many "LOOK WHAT MY GIRLFRIEND MADE ME", "LOOK AT WHAT I FOUND AT A GARAGE SALE", and "DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER THIS MASSIVELY SUCCESSFUL GAME" posts. :-/

I was hoping r/games would be an improvement, and it has, but even that has already started to go downhill.

The amount of entitlement on reddit lately is ridiculous.

The sad thing is, you're not exaggerating. Case in point:

That idea isn't remotely feasible, but there were plenty of people there hailing it as the best thing ever.

Thought: Do We Own Our Steam Games? by SandmanXCin Games

[–]imdwalrus 0 points1 point ago

Exactly this has happened multiple times to people, usually over payment disputes or attempts to get around regional pricing via gifting/trading.

Payment disputes are pretty clearly defined by the subscriber agreement. If you charge back or if you use a card that doesn't have enough funds they will react, and I think that it's necessary that they do so to protect their business model.

If you buy 20 games from gamestop and then steal one, they can sue you and ban you from their store, but they can't take away the games you legitimately purchased, nor is there any good reason for them to do so.

This isn't the same thing. Physical items aren't equatable to digital items. Valve needs to protect Steam and the integrity of their marketplace, and apparently they've decided that banning offenders entirely is the way to do that.

Like I've said in other comments, I think that banning the entire account is an overreaction. The first (and probably only step, barring significant TOS violations) step should have been to remove the titles in question instead of banning the account flat out. But I don't fault Valve for taking action, even though it was an overreaction.

[–]imdwalrus 0 points1 point ago

In this case, the guy was offering on the Something Awful forums to circumvent regional pricing by gifting cheaper games in Russia to anyone who asked. Valve sure didn't make a mistake this time and, so far, it seems like they've had issue in the majority of cases I've seen online.

They're not infallible, no, but with millions of users the lack of actual false positives (or false positives that haven't been reversed after further investigation), you're coming off as paranoid.

[–]imdwalrus 1 point2 points ago

It wasn't a payment issue - it was a compatibility issue with the remake of The Secret of Monkey Island. Probably not too relevant for your example.

[–]imdwalrus -1 points0 points ago

We never hear the full story on these things, but there have certainly been claims of Steam banning people for trivial things like a declined credit card.

"Trivial" is relative. When your business is digital goods and credit cards are the main payment method, I'd sure as hell be paranoid if the card didn't work or if I saw anything that could possibly indicate suspicious behavior.

I do think that there should be some kind of intermediary step between banning the account entirely - just removing the titles in question would be a good starting point.

And their customer service is notoriously bad, so don't expect an easy resolution.

It really depends on the time of year. Most of the complaints I've heard about customer service are during sales, when they're absolutely slammed with support tickets. When Steam isn't in the middle of a big sale, I haven't had any issues with their support.

[–]imdwalrus 0 points1 point ago

No, you don't.

If your account credentials are saved, you can start Offline Mode. Trust me - I've never manually started Offline Mode like that. All it took to play World of Goo on my last plane flight was turning off my netbook's wireless card and starting Steam normally.

Anyone else notice this Johnny Depp cross-over reference in Rango? I was the only one that laughed in my family... by HardcoreFluff93in movies

[–]imdwalrus 50 points51 points ago

The OP is using the stupid "Anyone else" cliche to ask if we've noticed a blatantly obvious reference to a well-known movie when Rango is full of references to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This isn't good content, there's nothing to discuss here, and it deserves the reaction it's received.
