I did not know Harry, nor did I have any interactions with him here on reddit - but I am heartbroken to hear this. The only word I can think of to describe it is tragic.

Not sure which guy's name you thought was weird - but Muggsy is just a nickname - his real name is Tyrone and Manute Bol was born in Sudan - other countries have different names.

Do you draft the coach by name or by team like defenses? If it is by name then the Saints should be interesting next year.

What sports leagues are the most balanced? What teams are the most dominant? A global comparison. by dwu2in sports

[–]hypo11 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely - the top of the chart says the metric is percentage won of total championships contested. However, a team like the Marlins which has only existed since 1993 has only "contested" for 19 World Series. They have won 2 of them, so their bar should be out at 10.5 percent, instead of around 2.5 where they are now.

There is no mention of Greedo shooting first or George Lucas messing with the trilogy in the original Clerks - George Lucas hadn't even messed with the trilogy yet (including making Greedo shoot first). Clerks came out in 1994. Star Wars Episode 4 Special Edition (when Lucas first started fucking with the trilogy and making Greedo shoot first) came out in 1997.

Anyone know of a good physical book on cursors or at least one that covers them well and in-depth? by master_of_nonein SQL

Why so focused on cursors? Generally speaking they are inefficient and there is often a better way to solve a problem that required them.

Help writing a query by alchemiein SQL

[–]hypo11 0 points1 point ago

It's a combination of two different concepts.

SUM() does exactly what it sounds like - it'll sum up across the entire grouping the data you specify as its arguments.

If you're familiar with other programming languages, CASE should look familiar (or "SELECT CASE"). If not, it's just a different way of saying "IF, Then, Else".

So in this example we've said take all of the records that have the same itemrecordID, barcode, callnumber etc - go through each set and for every record, if it has an ActionTakenID of 13, add 1 to a total we're counting up - otherwise, add 0. The final total represents the number of checkouts for that ItemRecordID.

[–]hypo11 1 point2 points ago*

Try replacing your checkouts and renewals statements with this:

SUM(CASE WHEN irh.ActionTakenID = '13' THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) as Checkouts,
SUM(CASE WHEN irh.ActionTakenID = '28' THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) as Renewals

And remove ActionTakenID from your group by.

I hereby second "Happiest Baby on the Block" - read the book and/or watch the DVD. I don't know that I agree with the author's assessments of WHY his methods work ("the missing trimester" and all that - seems kind of pseudo-sciencey to me) but his methods DO work. Also, pick up a "Miracle Blanket" (http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Blanket--Baby-Swaddling--Beige/dp/B000G0L2TM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335367521&sr=8-1) - it's the best swaddling blanket on the market and yet it doesn't get the attention it deserves.

[SQLplus]How do I create an sql table with a date feild formated like this 12-JAN-2010 by redelman431in SQL

[–]hypo11 6 points7 points ago

Actually, the convert code 106 gets pretty close to OP's desired formatting: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187928.aspx

SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR, GetDate(), 106) will return "23 Apr 2012".

From there, to get it to OP's requested format you need only replace spaces with dashes:

SELECT REPLACE(CONVERT(VARCHAR, GETDATE(), 106), ' ', '-')
