Indeed, but even the most potent strains of marijuana require the ingestion of ludicrous amounts in order to OD. A user would pass out long before they came close to an overdose.

I think his point was that a teacher's worth may not be defined purely by their knowledge at any given point but by their humility in teaching. A great mind can be obscured very easily by pride, and it can easily create a mask for the less intelligent to hide behind.

I concur. I would love to see at least a gallery on this if not an AMA as well.

Awesome example of shifting the argument away from the real question. Though in regards to 7, just assuming that every one of the dudes was 30, is it even remotely just that God had them mauled by bears for poking at his prophet's baldness? Obviously the answer is no, which still leaves so many questions for this dude to answer.

In one sentence or one word, explain what makes YOU so confident in your atheism? by MattLikesMusicin atheism

[–]hotboxpizza 0 points1 point ago

Indeed. The first, philosophically, is much deeper than the length would initially suggest. To see that religion has, for all intents and purposes, bent to scientific truth since the Renaissance was a huge factor in my realization that religion is not as steadfast or universal as the doctrine might suggest. The quote you mentioned is, on the other hand, a wonderful guide for how to live a life without religion while still maintaining a positive influence on the world. I hadn't heard of him until I came to /r/atheism about 6 months ago, but since then NDT has definitely become am influential person to me.

What have your experiences been with coming out to your parents about your atheism? by trollestia34in atheism

[–]hotboxpizza 1 point2 points ago

I'm 20 and would consider myself to have become an atheist, after a lifetime in the church, about 6 months ago. I already know I won't be able to come out for at least a few more years until i'm financially independent. Good luck, guy. Hang in there.

On the fence about my faith (or lack thereof) and I wouldn't mind a little push... by Pterodactyl418in atheism

[–]hotboxpizza 1 point2 points ago

This is what I have to offer you. I grew up in a fundie family, and about 6 months ago I began to question my faith. This document outlines a pretty solid argument against Christianity, and a more general one against theism of any sort. It's not perfect, and it does come off as snarky in some parts. It's also a long read.

Despite all those things, that document is the reason I'm free from the fucked up religion I spent my life devoted to. I would advise reading through it, if only once. It answers Heaven and Hell questions too, so it should be relevant to your concerns.

Hope all goes well!

I have a few:

  1. Hypocrisy in Religion.
  2. Lack of proof separating any religion from another.
  3. Contradictions. Contradictions everywhere.
  4. Science. Specifically, “God is an ever receding pocket of scientific ignorance.” - Neil deGrasse Tyson

Grew up in a fundie family. 2 months on /r/atheism changed my life.

Is it really important to "Come out" as an atheist? by whiteboiswagin atheism

[–]hotboxpizza 0 points1 point ago

I would give a lot to be in your situation right now. I'm 20, but completely dependent on my parents (they are currently paying for college, insurance, housing over the summer, etc.). I know I can't risk coming out to them right now because they would at the very least pull me out of school, or possibly cut me off altogether.

That being said, I know I would come out as soon as I gained true independence, even at the risk of them shunning me. However, your priorities may be different than mine. Who's to say?

I tend to go with "Fan-Fucking-Tastic!" or "Oh, me? I'm just GREAT!" and I almost always tack on "...as always!" at the end. I do it in an over-the-top excited, yet still genuine way that says "If you know me, you'll realize I'm probably just having an average day, or I'm drunk. If you don't however, you'll probably just think I'm drunk."
