Saints Row Dev: Xbox 720 Used Game Ban 'Fantastic' - Consumers 'will grow to understand.' by 999realthingsin gaming

[–]hopstar 0 points1 point ago

I'm not defending anyone, but as I recall it was $50 for a new game in the PS2 era. Now it's $60.

I remember when SMB3 came out and it was $60. IIRC, it and Star Tropics were the first games to try that price point.

My only concern about this thing is that will encourage people to burn stuff that shouldn't be burned, such as tree bark and undergrowth in sensitive areas that are better left undisturbed.

Beyond that, it's a pretty sweet idea.

I didn't create /r/cider I'm just trying to help our grow. Between the British scrumpy cider and the Basque funky cider there's a lot of middle ground.

Hmm...that might actually work. Maybe a combo of apple cider vinegar and rice vinegar to give it a sweet/tart balance? I bookmarked this post, so if/when we come up with something I'll let you know :)

I didn't have enough homegrown dill for all of them, but they were still fantastic.

Most grocery stores will sell huge stalks of fresh cut dill during the growing season. IIRC, we only paid $1.99/stalk, and there were probably 30 good size sprigs on each one.

Since you seem to know a bit about canning as well, perhaps you can help me. We have a massive fennel plant in our yard that pops up year after year with no intervention on our part. I'm talking 8' high and 4' in diameter huge. We use some of it for cooking and let the rest go to seed, but I thought maybe we could pickle the fennel stalks this summer. The tough part is figuring out the perfect "sweet pickle" brine to accentuate the sweet, slightly licorice-y flavor of the stalks.

Any ideas?

That's entirely possible, but she did seem genuinely concerned with our well-being.

If it's any consolation, I think those are pretty fucking awesome. I'm not a famous person or anything, but know that someone out there thinks you're talented.

I have to say, the combination of almost perfect punctuation and complete lack of capitalization is strangely entertaining.

... and if I were you I would also sterilize those jars. don't want no botchulism.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the acidity from the vinegar and the refrigeration is enough to ward off the botulism, but FWIW we usually do the full "water bath" canning method with our pickles because we make large batches and wouldn't have room in the fridge otherwise.

This was a "small batch." :)

these are usually not shelf stable, they need to stay in the fridge while you're making them and eating them

True. I did say "refrigerator pickles", but I probably should have emphasized the fact that they have to stay cold once you've made them.

It's true, and you're not limited to cucumbers. Asparagus spears, green beans, and garlic cloves are all tasty when pickled.

You can even make your own refrigerator pickles for stupidly cheap. Scale up or down as needed:

  • combine water, white vinegar, and apple cider vinegar at a 2:1:1 ratio

Add the following to the brine and mix well:

  • 2 tablespoons of chili flakes per quart
  • 3-4 sprigs of fresh dill (ideal), or 3-4 heaping spoonfuls of dried dill (less ideal) per quart
  • 3-5 garlic cloves per quart
  • 4 tablespoons of kosher or pickling salt

Fill jars with whatever vegetable you'd like to pickle, pour brine into jar, and put the jar in your fridge. Depending on the thickness and density of the stuff you're pickling, they should be ready in 3-14 days.

Honestly, I don't have any citations. I grew up in Minnesota, and my aunt is an cardiothoracic surgeon. Once on a family ski trip she told us kids not to do stupid stuff like jump out of the hot tub and dive into the snowbank because it "would give us a heart attack." I never really questioned it because, well, she's a freaking heart specialist.

Now you've made me wonder if there's any truth to it. I'll try to hunt down info and report back.

I didn't post it here because I don't think the purpose of Reddit is to promote your product.

You should tell that to Woody's PR team.

That sucks that it's only available to people under 30. Anyone know of a similar option for those over the big three oh?

Coldest I've ever been in was around -50F in Northern Minnesota.

I remember when that happened a couple times in the mid-nineties. They closed schools, not because of snow or ice, but due to concerns of kids getting severe frostbite while waiting for the bus.

IIRC, the lowest temp I can remember was the winter of '92 (maybe '93) when the "actual temp" was -50f, and with the windchill it was pushing -95f. My stupid friends and I decided to go skiing at Coffee Mill, and when we got there the place was empty except for the owner sitting in the chalet drinking hot cocoa. He told us we were fucking crazy, but if we felt comfortable getting on the lifts by ourselves he would turn two of them on. We ended up skiing until just before dark before he came out and shut the lifts down because it would cost too much money to turn all the lights on for only 4 guys. It was cold as fuck, but having a ski hill entirely to yourself is pretty freaking awesome.

Why does the Reddit search engine suck so badly? by RedBeardedOwlin explainlikeimfive

[–]hopstar 4 points5 points ago

It's only free for low volume sites. I don't recall the exact numbers from last time this question popped up, but someone who was familiar with Google's rates estimated that it would cost reddit tens of thousands per month to use their services.
