[bug] Comments don't show up. by qwer777in RESissues

[–]honestbleeps 0 points1 point ago

i would guess if this were really a specifically-RES-related bug that this would affect everyone... not just you...

A few important questions:

  • Does this problem affect all subreddits or just some?

  • are you using night mode, or no?

This was reported once before on a specific subreddit, and the comments weren't actually hidden - they were wayyyy down the page, pushed down by a CSS change the moderators of that subreddit had made that conflicted with RES.

Reddit I need the help of cat lovers, my cat pees on the counters. (details inside) by learnthetruthnowin AskReddit

[–]honestbleeps 0 points1 point ago

did the vet test the cat's urine?

if not: get her to a vet who will test her urine.

My cats both suffer from urinary crystals because their pH balance in their stomachs isn't right. They must be on a prescription diet, or they get crystals which cause them pain - this usually also makes them urinate where they're not supposed to and is an immediate sign to get them to a vet.

since mine are male cats - the pain is likely more pronounced, etc... in fact, male cats are in danger of getting backed up so badly that they die -- very quickly.. as in within 24 hours...

Female cats are less susceptible to this due to a bigger urethral opening, but still may be in pain, etc...

If she has crystals, you'll be paying for a prescription diet for the rest of her life... it isn't cheap, but it's not wholly unaffordable... DO NOT STRAY from this diet. I tried once buying other urinary health oriented food that claimed it did the same thing. After a few weeks it ended up costing my poor cat some serious pain because it didn't work as well as the prescription stuff I had him on.

What scene from TV or movies makes you cry tears of happiness? by lineofsightnamein AskReddit

shocked to see this up top (granted the thread is young), but any hockey fan can appreciate this.

My (more home team oriented) hockey moments would of course be Toews lifting his (granted not the same buildup)...

A more universal one, however, would be this final answer to the question "is it offensive that Blackhawks fans cheer during the National Anthem?":

no no.. thank you... I've been trying to come up with a good but really simple example so I could do a 10-15 minute screencast tutorial for BabelExt -- and you have provided me with just that!

I'll crank this out this evening using BabelExt.

Suggested title: Youtube Theater Mode ...

Should be relatively simple, and would be a nice demo app for me to show off BabelExt with.

Will post back with an update.

FF seems to have a memory sink again and regularly bombards my ram until it crashes. Everyone tells me to switch to Chrome but I don't want to. My only add-ins are ABP and RES. by snukain firefox

[–]honestbleeps 2 points3 points ago

so go to the github link (see sidebar of /r/Enhancement) and get the user.js from the lib folder. It should install into greasemonkey just fine.

you just don't get the benefit of automatic updates (or a few other minor things)

Is there a way to have RES open certain subreddits from the shortcut bar to "new", while others still open to "hot"? by Liberty4theStatesin Enhancement

sure, double click it to edit it, and add /new to the end of the subreddit field.

[–]honestbleeps 4 points5 points ago

this is something I'm looking into... so far as I can tell, it ONLY affects the machine I use with Win7 x64 on it. My 32 bit Vista laptop does not have memory problems at all.

problem is, there's NO reason RES should be causing this. What I'm seeing, not sure if you're seeing the same thing, is "zombie compartments"...

I close a reddit page I've viewed, but it stays stuck in memory...

There is NO reason this should happen so far as I understand the addon architecture. RES isn't storing any reference to that "page"...

I'm still trying to identify the cause, but I'm getting more and more discouraged with Firefox's addon SDK.

EDIT: Just talked to a member of the Addon SDK team and was told two things:

1) Beta version of yet another addon SDK update may fix a big leak...

2) Firefox nightly (FF 15 right now) also fixes a major leak problem...

Long story short: this still may well not be RES's fault... I am looking deeper into it.

Why, Google? by vuxanovin Design

[–]honestbleeps 2 points3 points ago

Google's logos are just a sign of deeper flaws in the google model. I have to load google sites on Firefox because Chrome times out

I use both browsers VERY extensively because I'm a web developer. I've never had this problem. Maybe something's funky with your installation of Chrome.

Google Bookmarks is different from Chrome Bookmarks, and there's not an obvious way to connect them. And so on.

Google Bookmarks is a service that roughly nobody has heard of.

Meanwhile if you "sign in" to Chrome, all of your stuff is synced (bookmarks, history, even your list of installed extensions)... I'd say that's some pretty nice synergy.

In fact, in the latest builds of Chrome on mobile devices you can even sync your open tabs between your mobile device(s) and/or desktop.

So many google products and services don't work well together, and the icon thing is just a superficial indicator of deeper problems.

The icon thing isn't a superficial indicator of "deeper problems" so much as "a gigantic structure"...

Google is goddamn huge. Way bigger in size and scale than anything you're likely to ever have encountered/dealt with.

They have departments separated not only by vast physical space, but also by vast "subject matter" space.

Yes - there are disadvantages to this - like some products not integrating so well with others.

However - there are MASSIVE advantages to this, as well. Having independent groups of technologists and designers who are able to test new ideas and build a product without being hampered by a bunch of red tape (YES, style guide included!) means they can rapidly get new ideas off the ground and into users' hands.

Yes. many of them fail. That's great! It's awesome that a company tries stuff and fails and then tries more stuff.

Yes, the end result is a lack of unified branding and sometimes even services until they mature more and become more integrated (examples: See gmail + google drive + google docs + google calendar ... the suite works FANTASTICALLY well for me and everything integrates)...

There are many options of how to structure a business. Google's has some of its own disadvantages, but the advantages outweigh them. The advantages (specifically ability to quickly experiment and get stuff out in the wild) are the reason google is in practically every damn facet of the web.

Why, Google? by vuxanovin Design

[–]honestbleeps 7 points8 points ago

If you're a designer and you base your design decisions off your own behavior, you're going to have a bad time.

I'm not a designer. I appreciate design, and I have worked directly with designers for the past ~14 years of my career. I am simply saying that the inconsistent icons aren't killing their products.

Plus, I can probably tell you a story about how you don't use Google+.

If you honestly think Google+ popularity and/or lack thereof has anything to do with design - you ascribe WAY too much to design, and/or WAY too little to the zillion other factors involved.

Google+ wouldn't somehow be successful if Google had more consistent design standards.

The only thing dumber than this that I saw today was Rosenbloom's article.

Seriously - if you take stock in anything Jesse Rogers says... just... stop watching hockey.. please.

[–]honestbleeps 9 points10 points ago

Let me tell you a story about how google's inconsistent icons have stopped me from using all of their services...

Oh wait.. that isn't a story...

Sometimes I think people really overthink the little things a bit too much, or at least put too much stock in "if you don't do design this certain way, you won't succeed"...

you're definitely right.. unfortunately my real-world situation doesn't make this a realistic possibility.

I'm not using a VPS though, I'm on a colocated physical box... a REALLY old colo box (as in dual P3 processors, OH YEA!) that I've never had the time to replace...

[bug] my message indicator has been showing 21 everytime I get a new message for the past week. by mattbluesmanin RESissues

[–]honestbleeps 0 points1 point ago

it may be that you have old unread messages... see recent /r/bugs posts...

otherwise: have you marked all of your messages read and still get an orangered? that'd be a reddit issue...

if you're leaving them unread, it's possible the RES cache is "stuck"... once you mark them all read, it should reset.

I dunno. Ask the >1 million who have?

as for permissions...

but thanks for your "feedback"...

unless you've got an openssl version mismatch because you didn't recompile sshd after updating openssl... then SSHd doesn't restart at all and you lose your connection.. at least I did... oops :-\

The problem was:

I updated openssl... but never recompiled openssh... so ssh was locked out completely and couldn't be reinstalled until I got physical access to the machine (or in this case, they plugged in a Spider KVM for me)...
