No OCR at all. Affixed to each book is a tag that is similar to a QR Code, but designed by us specifically for this purpose. The tags encode the LC Call numbers.

Mainly because we found it was too hard for the user to keep pointing the phone at the books and try to pick up the misplaced book and move it. By freezing and zooming in, it allows the user to put the phone down to their side (or continue to look at it while they try to locate the book) as they move around.

This is part of what we're researching. Would it actually save time and money, given the one-time issue of having to tag all of the books in the system. What the video doesn't show is that we've also developed a web interface that allows library employees to dump in their catalog and get back printable tags to affix to the books. So far, we've seen that tagging an entire shelf doesn't actually take very long; and as I mentioned, it would only have to be done once.

This sounds like a homework problem. I don't know how "correct" your shuffling needs to be but if you want to do it right you might want to read this article. Most people shuffle incorrectly and thus the results are predictable.

It's a patent, not a copyright. That doesn't "get around" anything.

Ben Klemens wrote an interesting book titled Math You Can't Use. It details a lot about what's wrong with the patent system. My favorite example from his book is the patented popup:

If you use that (or anything similar), you can get sued for infringing a patent that doesn't expire until 2018.

It's a gray area that's under a lot of debate. Depending on which Supreme Court case you look at, you can't patent math but you can patent "processes".

I could be wrong, but... it seems like you are seeing this message because Miami IT Services has determined that your computer has a viral computer infection of some nature. As your computer is infected, it has been quarantined from the network with limited access. If you are faculty or staff, a TSR will be dispatched to deal with your situation. If you are a student, it is recommended that you take your computer to the IT Service Center in 317 Hughes Hall, west wing where the support desk staff will explain your virus removal options. Once the computer has been deemed clean by IT Services/TSR Staff, full network access will be returned to the computer.
