Disc Golf is a fun way to get outside and walk around, but what's with $60.00 'frisbies' darn it. The price makes no sense. by TheContrarian2in discgolf

Disc golf store in Atlanta? by meddlingbearin discgolf

[–]heartman74 0 points1 point ago

SW ATL? PIAS in Fayetteville has a decent selection (little pricey) ... no "only disc golf" stores down here though. Disc Caddie is on the north side and Disc Stalker is over on the east side in Lawrenceville.

Hole #3 at my local course. Par 4 mando under bridge. by NeroCobbZillain discgolf

Backhand Ion off the tee. Forehand Firebird or Trident upshot through the bridge. Drop in bird :)

Oh baby, It feels like Christmas! by UnitedPuppySlayerin discgolf

MVP is only producing Mediums for now

Welp, that was my question. I love soft Ions for driving and the eclipse make it so much easier to find the discs.

Guess I'm waiting a little bit longer ...

Has anyone here ever played the Sandy Creek Park course in Athens, GA? by ern19in discgolf

[–]heartman74 1 point2 points ago

Yup, it's a good course. They run action there on Thursday nights at 6 (meet at the practice basket). It costs $2 to get in the park and then another dollar to play, so bring some extra cash or raid the change in your car's ash tray.

22 holes with all concrete tees. Quite a challenging course but very fun as well. Good mix of open and wooded holes.

There are definitely courses in GA I would rank ahead of Sandy Creek (Flyboy, IDGC, Flat Rock, Moseley, McCurry), but it's worth a play for sure.

Big Jerm could whip any of us with just his forehand ... and for what it matters, just his backhand as well.

Legacy Rampage? by Mikel1256in discgolf

[–]heartman74 1 point2 points ago

I prefer it in Pinnacle plastic (tends to be flatter IMO).

I use Rampages for long distance RHFH 350+ ... thrown nose down and flat it'll go straight with the slightest hint of a turn and then the 4 fade kicks in ensuring that it ends to the right (usually with a HUGE ~30' flare skip).

Once they've been forehanded for a while, they get beat and will turn much easier. At that point I use Rampages for backhand 350'+ usually with some headwind, and they'll always fade back at the end ... once again with a big skip thanks to the huge rim.

I'd say they're a legit speed 14. I find it much easier to get them up to speed forehanding them thanks to the added torque.

Comparable discs IMO:

  • An ESP Force that's slightly beat and faster

  • A Star Ape (no they don't make them ... yet) that's slightly beat, and again faster

How long did it take you guys to get really good at throwing? by darkwavechickin discgolf

[–]heartman74 5 points6 points ago

About 2 years ago, I played at least five days a week all summer. Went from +15ish to finally hitting par on my home course. Started playing in weekly dubs the next spring and then tournaments in late summer.

The fastest way to get better is to PRACTICE PUTTING!!! If you can be confident within the circle (10m radius from the basket), then your drives become easier as you have a larger landing zone to hit.

some questions about how to improve - putting and FH by greensmurf30in discgolf

[–]heartman74 1 point2 points ago

Replying to this so you get an orangered :)

I'll be back at UGA full time in the fall. We should play a round at the Herm or Sandy Creek.

You definitely need to check out random draw dubs at the Herm (if you haven't already) on Monday nights at 6. Get there a little early to pay ($5 all in = $2 payout, $1 each for 2 CTPs, and $1 to ace fund). A great group of guys and all skill levels are welcome. Any of them would be more than willing to help you out.

... and now my thoughts on your questions:

1) Sounds like you're not getting a clean release. Whether you flick your wrist or don't, flutter shouldn't be a problem with a good, smooth, forceful, clean release.

2) Definitely get a complete transfer of energy all the way up from your feet to your hand. That will help for distance. When I'm more than 40 ft. out I jump putt with some loft and play the fade into the basket.

3) Softer putters are more common among spin putters (spin putting pros: Eric McCabe, Pete Ulibarri, Matt Orum, Nate Doss, ...). Push putters tend to like stiffer putters (push putting pros: Dave Feldberg, Ken Climo, Nikko Locastro, Will Schusterick, ...). Of course putter stiffness and mold is very personal and whatever feels good and works for you is the correct choice.

  • The Soft Wizard will most likely be somewhat stiff (usually similar to KC Pro plastic in stiffness). Super soft or super stupid soft are the floppier versions of Gateway putters. Gateway is notorious for different runs being different stiffness. Good stiff putters: Medium Ion/Anode, KC Pro Aviar, Pro-D Challenger/Magnet, Soft Wizard/Warlock/Voodoo/Magic.

4) Jeremy Koling is the man for forehand. This is a great vid of him that helped me develop my forehand.. Backhand has more distance potential, but a good FH can be just as versatile IMO.

5) Backhand distances: Putters: 250-300, Midranges: 250-310, Fairway drivers: 280-370, Drivers: 350-410 with max-d totally open holes being 450ish.

  • Forehand I rarely use for max-d and only really on holes that turn/dogleg right. Because of that I throw overstable discs flat and play the fade and usual skip to the right. Comfortable forehand distance for me is 250-300 and I can max out around 350 if I need to. I do a lot of thumbers which end to the right as well and at about the same distances as my forehands.

  • 250ish with a Roc and especially with a Viper is pretty good (Vipers are VERY overstable discs). With good clean form/technique you should be able to push the Roc to 280-300 without much problem. Might look into Leopards and Valkyries as some discs that aren't overstable and will give you some turn.

6) ... I made it to the end of yours, will you make it to the end of mine? Max weight is based off of diameter ratios, typically being: putters = 175, mids = 180, drivers = 175. Some people think max weights are "fly more consistent/truer to the discs intended design" than lower weights (lower weights can be more flippy although some of that might just be psychological ...). I like my putters at 175, Mids at 175-180, Fairways at 170-175, and Drivers around 170. Really personal preference.

Good luck! :)

TL;DR: ... ... yeesh, that was a lot

Any UGA lifehacks? by eg207in UGA

[–]heartman74 0 points1 point ago

  • more expensive then most apartments (but you pay up front for everything so use as much water and AC/heat as you want ...)
  • no stove/range or dryer/washer in rooms
  • there are full size fridges
  • plenty of counter space for electric griddles and toaster ovens
  • you're already on campus and just a quick Orbit/AG Hill bus ride to class (or bike)
  • very convenient to bike to Sanford for football games down River Rd
  • best dining hall on campus and Ramsey are right there
