I love 15 yo jackasses with overpriced camera equipment. Here's why by droelf1213in photography

One of my classmates had a 5D2 with seriously nothing good to back it up. Cheap glass, no lighting, cheap-o tripod. That one kind of bothers me, but not because I envy anything they have. I'd much rather have my gear :D

Wow that's not true at all! There are so many all manual rangefinders out there that are amazing. I'm a medium format guy so I'll start with them... Mamiya 7, Mamiya 6, Plaubel Makina 67, Fuji GS645s, GS645, GF670... the list goes on and on....

Then with 35mm there are a plethora in screw mount like the Canon 7. Also Zeiss Contax. If you're into compactness, the Contax T.

But I will agree with you that Leica is the best built of all of these and thus the shooting experience is great. But you really need to give some of these other cameras a shot, they're all fantastic and much cheaper than Leica. You might have been short changing yourself without shopping around. Even my Canonet QL17 is bloody awesome, especially considering it's a twenty five dollar eBay camera.

The point at which I knew I was pretty drunk. by Malthusian1in funny

This suggestion might sound weird, but seriously, give this a shot.

When the mac ready and still hot, beat an egg and drop it in while stirring the mac. Keep stirring vigorously around until it thickens, you don't want it to curdle at ALL. It's not tough, just keep it moving. The texture of the mac n cheese becomes intensely velvety once it thickens. You won't notice the egg taste, but the texture is insane.

Or take about a 1" bunch of asparagus, and wrap it with some bacon (thinner cut works better), and into the oven at around 500 til the bacon's a little crisp. One pound wouldn't even be enough

I think painting photographs is a lot like photographing paintings.

How often do you use telephotos? by Winooskiin photography

[–]h4ppydaze 0 points1 point ago

Telephoto lenses are fantastic for portraits, and you'll soon start to wish you had a lens that you can use to fill your frame with the subject. At 55mm, that is doable but at telephoto lengths it's much easier, especially for candids.

A sniffing dog. by thegreenlupein treecomics

[–]h4ppydaze 5 points6 points ago

Honestly I just watched a documentary on dogs (Nat Geo's) on Netflix the other night. There was a story on a Russian breeder who bred a sniffer dog that is always sniffing. They noted that the german shepherds used in the states tend to only hunt out targets when they're instructed to. I don't know how credible this is.

You know most german shepherds won't 'signal' unless they were instructed to 'sniff around'

nice photo, great concept. Lighting on your lens is a little bit harsh and uneven, and I think it'd have a little bit more effect with a 85mm 1.2L in the place of the 18-55 kit ;)

nice composition but it looks so heavily worked - I'd prefer something more natural

Anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area who knows a reputable place that can produce great Black and White prints? by shum1nat0rin photography

[–]h4ppydaze 0 points1 point ago

ohhh digital. I thought you were talking film, because it's much harder to find a reputable film print shop than for digital print.

If you're talking digital, you'd be surprised the quality you can get just from a print shop like Kinko's if you choose the right printer and paper. If you want to go somewhere with more expertise and you are striving for perfection, I'd recommend a print shop that is 'G7 certified,' it's a world standard for a master printer. If you take your stuff to a G7 certified shop in Berlin, it will look the exact same as a print from a G7 certified shop in Shanghai.
