What are the health risks of LSD? by BetterJoshin askscience

[–]h12321 0 points1 point ago

I am referring to this view by Grobb et al 2011

Abstract:

"By the early 1970s, however, political and cultural pressures forced the cessation of all projects [hallucinogen research] ."

Or from Scientific American:

"Hofmann was jubilant [age 102] ... when he learned that the first scientific research on LSD in decades was just beginning"

From his age, guessing this was around 2008.

Or from the website of the sponsors MAPS:

"MAPS is proud to sponsor the first study of the therapeutic use of LSD in humans in over 35 years"

Alternatively, we could look at The Pharmacology of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide: A Review:

"almost no legal clinical research with LSD has occurred since the 1970s"

And...

"Due to the widely dispersed (across time and languages) experimental literature concerning the pharmacological properties of LSD, old and new data are together reviewed here."

Hence I think my view point has merit. While you are correct, I should check sources first, I have done it now. I would suggest that you find a more reliable source.

Edit: for spelling and punctuation

What are the health risks of LSD? by BetterJoshin askscience

[–]h12321 0 points1 point ago

I can't find sources right now as I am on my phone [Edit: see below comment for sources], but one issue with any facts about LSD is the lack of research. Once it was classified as illegal, large scale research on LSD stopped, meaning very little evidence as to short or particularly long term health effects of LSD. Most evidence comes from people reporting to have used LSD rather than proper scientifically rigorous studies.

As such, I don't think it's possible to give an accurate answer.

Coffee drinkers have a lower risk of death overall than others who do not drink coffee, according to a new study. by Hrodrikin science

I think I have got used to assuming a negative time of voice when reading reddit comments. Now I reread it, I can reinterpret it as not a big deal. :)

[–]h12321 0 points1 point ago

Actually, in the results section of the original research article the author writes:

" the risk of death was increased among coffee drinkers" (emphasis added)

Mortality risk is the correct way to describe it. However, technically using "lower risk of death" correctly describes the statistics, as less than 15% of participants had died at the end of the study. While you can make the assumption that they will die, as you have not observed it you do not know they won't. As such, both risk of death and mortality risk could be seen as correct.

Brain oscillations reveal that our senses do not experience the world continuously - It has long been suspected that humans do not experience the world continuously, but rather in rapid snapshots. by DrJulianBashirin science

[–]h12321 0 points1 point ago

This is not thought to be due to an increase in fps of the mind, unless you can find some evidence to suggest it does. This is much more likely to be a retrospective timing inaccuracy, where the duration of an event is estimated as too long due to its significance. As for being "in the zone" from what I have read, it is the opposite: they vastly underestimate the elapsed time due to not paying any attention to it.

Well you can do better, the minimap also has a direction component, as on a square map North is always up. Then you can work out from the degrees away from the centre the arrow is to correctly identify the location with a bit of trig.

Languages by scripts [1599x740] by Areatin MapPorn

[–]h12321 0 points1 point ago

Interestingly, both are very different. The script is a derivative of the Indic scripts, being similar in shape and function to others in the group e.g. Devanagari. The language itself however is not from the same origins. It is a member of the tibeto-burman language group, which is part of the sino-tibetan language family. My friend in my Mandarin Chinese class tells me that it feels similar to Mandarin in some ways, but in others is completely different.

Diamonds are near worthless. The whole retail market is a giant, well orchestrated, monopolistic scam based on public misconception. by raks1991in TrueReddit

[–]h12321 1 point2 points ago

My example about clothes was more a potential example rather than an steadfast instance. You are right, if a person wished to survive in the artic, and clothes aided them, then yes they would be of value.

Perhaps I should change tack in this argument. I agree with you for the most part I suppose, but I object that you think that "inherent value" means to be able to feed clothe, shelter or defend yourself. You have correctly observed that there is no inherent value in other goods, as they serve no base purpose. I am extending that argument and stating that even survival is not necessary unless you desire survival. If you wish to die soon, then shelter or food are of no use. Thus, there is no inherent value in anything whatsoever, unless it helps you achieve something you desire. This desire is not constant, and varies through people and time. As there is no desire which will always prevail, then there is no object which will always have value. It is dependent on the subject at hand.

No, it is what you are actually willing to exchange.

And how do you decide the value of those good you could exchange for it? Perhaps what you are willing to exchange for them? To an extent your statement is true, but the underlying reason for what you are willing to exchange is how much you desire to 'own' something.

[–]h12321 1 point2 points ago

That's not what value means at all. In a society without clothes, there is no need for clothes, hence something that allows you to clothe yourself has no value.

Likewise, what is valuable to someone who doesn't wish to live anymore? A means of death not of survival. Value is all about what you desire.

Languages by scripts [1599x740] by Areatin MapPorn

[–]h12321 4 points5 points ago

how is it not close? It shares a similar shape, and in many cases similar letters as well. Other scripts are much more different than the difference between Cryllic and Latin.

In any case, Devanagari and other abugidas are represented just as closely, even though the scripts are more different. Your argument makes no sense.

All very good points. I think part of the issue is their data source: Woman Stats Project. Sounds like an organisation with an agenda.

For map 8, according to wikipedia the UK and US figures are the same, but according to the map are rather different, so there is some figure discrepancies here.
