So ticked that I missed this deal. It was on FatWallet and Slickdeals too and I didn't have time to check things today. Doh!

Very basic question: What does the d.b. meter on my Collins radio actually measure? by Nirriti_the_Blackin amateurradio

[–]grendelt -5 points-4 points ago

No, that d.b. on your meter does not mean decibel. The db is actually your Dobro meter.

It tells you the amount of dobro necessary to match the twang that booming signal from 4-land (possibly 5-land too).

For all other stations, it tells you the amount of dobro lacking from the other op's station.

You'll know this is true because when nothing is being said in a SSB signal, the meter will register 0 dobros. As soon as some old-timer net on 40 or 80 starts up, you'll see your dobro meter start to bounce all over the place.

If the noise-floor is especially high, it registers equally high dobros. That's directly proportional to the number of steel guitar players you'd need to overcome the noise.

$100 to pay some guy's brother's girlfriend to make a logo.

$10 to run off some crap at Kinkos for the "campaign".

Offbeat, creative uses of amateur radio? by civexin amateurradio

Offbeat and creative, dunno how many "outsiders" would even care, but it's a neat use of ham radio and Morse:

This goes in line with what N0SSC stated about "Ham Radio 2.0", this ARRL launched this video to help pave the way of this new push:

True, but you've realized this and are attempting to get over. I, for one, thank you for at least trying in those situations. Been there.

Anyone in Houston: South loop 610, exiting onto I-45 South. Every day at rush hour - this.

People not paying attention to others around them <period>.

If people were more aware of others and strived to just get out of everyone else's way - life would go so much more smoothly.

Only once was a I brazen enough to not move over for them. I kept driving down the center of the aisle to tell them to back the hell up. They gave me that look and sat there for a while before they put it in reverse and chose to go another route. (I even lurched my car as I put it in park and folded my arms to let them know I was not going to give in.)

I was leaving and heading home, so I wasn't in any sort of rush.

Tell them they should not initiate it.

Typically the face the singer makes when getting everyone to clap along is hilarious. It's like the face people make to toddlers and dogs "Who's a good boy? You're a good boy! Go on - clap. That's a good boy!"

I've wanted to go pick up the freshly tossed cigarette butt and poke it back in the window from wince it came. Smile big and kindly say "you dropped this!" as Ned Flanders might do.

Simple driving tip: If you're getting passed on the right, you need to move over.

I've at times pondered the idea of making simple driving tip billboards.

Yeah - while it's good to be ambitious, don't set the bar so high you can't reach it. It's better to blow away your requirements and have to time add bells and whistles than to have an overly ambitious requirements document and come up short.

We found one of these at a gas station in Giddings, TX. My dad helped me scoop it into a box and I took it to school the next day.

My teacher just about freaked out when I showed him. I think he kept it for the next few years on a pin board.
