Thanks to GOP, House Votes Down NDAA Amendment Prohibiting Indefinite Detention of U.S. Citizens by anutensilin progressive

Clearly the only answer here is to round up random high ranking Republicans.

"Hey don't cry Representatives, you gave us this power, see you later! Much much later."

Watched the new episode yesterday.

I gotta say... It's great to see someone finally creating some next generation storytelling like this.

Yeah I know this is a promoted link but fuck it, this is very well done. Nice work guys. Upvote from me.

Yeah I like bitching about them but I don't need a huge amount of attention over it. Hope you enjoyed it though! :D

High rated AMA threads are discarded with such short attention span that it's unlikely to help. Not like I care about the karma anyway heh. I think a general AMA thread for people who've worked in reality TV would be interesting.

The process for finding assholes who treat each other like shit on Real World, Survivor and Bachelor type shows? It's an elaborate psychological profile test and works like the reverse of most... I.e. the worse the individual scores on the risk assessment, the more likely they are to be cast. Oh and they test for STD's too first and often end up with a cast that's about 80% crawling with diseases and you feel horrible watching the 20% get pulled into sexual relationships while the producers just watch.

In a nutshell the ghost hunting parts were shot semi-straightforward. Just give the guys some cameras and watch them react to being in dark spaces with overly active imaginations. Then those scenes are edited for maximum dramatic impact with lots of over the top enhancements like music and sound to make certain scenes effective. But most of the techniques like the meters and sound recordings work like Ouija Boards... People see and hear what they imagine could be a ghost because that's what they're trying to see/hear. It's almost like cold reading.

But none of those shows would work without all the post sound additions that create 'scares' and big moments. Those sounds make most of the scenes feel much more intense than the raw footage ever shows. The audience doesn't know which parts those are so it feels bigger than it really is. Having to sit through the raw footage makes it pretty compelling to me that ghosts really don't exist to anyone unless you reaaaaaaaallly want to believe.

However the non-ghost scenes, like work and family stuff are pretty much directed and slated and shot with multiple takes like any dramatic narrative fictional TV. You give the performers their motivation and then they improv reactions and dialog. That format is how most of reality TV is done. Actors and comedians are even hired to play 'old friends' and 'family members' of characters.

There are also story producers brought in to create narratives through editing and reaction shots are intercut with different scenes to make it appear that reaction, emotion, and tension is much more amplified than the raw dull footage actually shows.

There are very few 'real' reality shows on television. I think the handful I can name are Intervention, COPS, First 48, and a few others. Most are just light cheap dramas and soap operas dressed up in documentary video style garb.

In truth the behind the scenes of most reality shows is MUCH more intense and drama-filled than what goes on in front of the cameras. It's an ugly business

Heh thanks. Maybe next time I'll get it in time and reveal the shocking truth that reality shows are really just a way to get men to watch cheaply produced soap operas.

Yeah... As expected nobody cares/notices after enough time has passed.

I don't know if this counts but I was an associate producer on the first season of the show as well as several other reality shows. Parts are definitely not 'reality' and I can describe the filming methods and process in more detail if anyone still cares (it's 12 hours later after the post so who knows).

I would be fine with local blogs like SFist and such submitting content here. We have a voting system so if that particular piece of content is not very interesting, there's no reason it would end up highly ranked.

Real sex advice from grandma. by CoolnessHeatBeerin SexPositive

While it is cute, imagine how you'd feel reading a letter from someone's grandpa saying "some women are pigs, they need sex all the time." Not exactly a positive message there.

Remember the Hitchcock 3D show from Universal Studios? You'll appreciate this montage from "Rear Window", reminiscent of the walk through at the end. by monsterflakein Themepark

Totally thought of that as well. Is there anywhere online to see a good copy of that awesome Hitchcock tribute film montage that opened the show? All I can find are low quality cam versions like this.

Miss that 3D Bird attack. The Psycho bit was always a bit of a dud though.

Not for sure, but that trailer sure did make it look like it since they took what was a really bloody scene in the original and made it bloodless.

The dialog, visuals, and some of the key moments in that trailer are definitely inspired more by Verhoeven than Dick.

Looks okay but more PG-13 Bourne Identity than the graphic violent insanity of the original. Part of what made the original so entertaining was how absurdly brutal the world Verhoeven paints is. Seeing Quaid kill a man with his bare hands is movie magic.

My 87 year old grandpa could go home soon, and he's nearly completely lost his faith. What can I do to help him? by curtquarquessoin Christianity

[–]gonzoblair 8 points9 points ago

No one is debating you, we are people trying to explain how your grandfather might feel so you can understand why your approach might feel wrong to a non-believer. I understand you care and are concerned for his well-being but you also need to allow for other views and the possibility that a 87 year old man has lived a life that has more complexities and challenges than the somewhat naive "he's lost and in need of my guidance" viewpoint you're approaching him with.

I guess maybe I'm just hoping this kid is smart enough to realize that non-believers are posting to him "this is how we see it, please try to understand" before he approaches his grandfather claiming how wrong and in desperate need of saving he is.

If your faith is faith that your grandfather is going to be eternally tortured... I would respectfully submit that your faith needs urgent challenging.

Imagine if someone posted a thread "My grandma might die soon and... she's a Jew. How can I fix her problem?" You would probably get quite a few responses from quite a few slightly ticked Jews. Same thing here.

One of the reasons you're receiving so many replies from atheists is that it's clear you don't understand your grandfather's mindset as a non-believer and are approaching him in a somewhat offensive way. You are treating him like a broken piece of machinery that needs repair, instead of acknowledging that he has experience more than enough of life to reach a worldview that likely surpasses your limited theological understanding.

Treating your grandfather like a flawed, broken, and doomed-to-hell soul in need of your salvation is not going to compel anyone towards your outlook. Approach with an open mind and a genuine sense of compassion and understanding and you might both learn more about the world.

If your grandfather died tomorrow and was sent to Hell, would you worship the creature that decided to eternally torture this man that you love and care about? If the answer is "no" then congratulations you realize this is an absurd idea and there's certainly no compelling reason to live life with that kind of theology in your head.
