I never said the other three don't have to watch out for one another, but pedestrians do have right of way so it's much easier to strike out into an intersection. Bikers believe they do which makes the cars play defense more often. In other words, cars need to make sure the bikes, the pedestrians, and the streetcars and buses have passed before they can make a move. This is a bit more of a pain then walking.

Yes driving is a choice - but when you make the choice, it still is a challenge to get anywhere in the city.

These are all really good points. I can't say much for European cities but I hear they're nice. Are there many of them in which interstates go through the center of them? I wonder if traffic coming off of the freeway puts drivers more on edge... are european drivers more patient?

We live in a pretty old city - and over time it's gotten a lot of band aids to support new forms of transportation and that is the most amazing thing I can say about this city. let's all try to remember how wonderful it is to be able to bike, walk, ride a train and drive in this city.

That being said - it's a fucking mess out there. Taxi's stop in the middle of a 40mph zone, cars barely obey any laws b/c they're barraged with having to watch for 3 other modes of transportation, the bikers sometimes have a lane, sometimes don't, sometimes feel it is too dangerous to obey the law (I'm thinking memorial in cambridge - who would ride your bike on that ! ).. the only ones who seem to obey the law are the trains. It's shitty but I don't know if it's going to get any better given we're living on landfill in a centuries old city

Did you read the paper or just the conclusion? He is basically rejecting a lot of the past "deep" approaches to A.I. in favor of Google style "all you need is big data". Anyway, it's beside the point, Norvig != AI God... in fact I think there are plenty of other A.I. guys that deserve a significant more amount of respect.

Machine Learning is not AI. You have a background in Cog. Sci. - make sure you keep your head straight when you apply to programs about what you're getting yourself in to.

Machine Learning is hot right now for reasons that have nothing to do with intelligence.

Separate flame war - Anyone else over the Andrew Ng and Peter Norvig worship? Can we start calling them fanboys yet? There are plenty of other AI contributors in the world who deserve credit. Does this have to do with the fact that their student base is now the size of a small city?

I firmly believe that object recognition will require AI to come back together before it is "solved" - Learning, Planning, Common-sense, Vision, Language, etc. I think the reason it's a "problem" is that it gets at the fact that there aren't many people who are thinking big enough yet.

Honest challenge to the field - read some literature in a tangential AI field and get some inspiration. Time to bring it all back together :-P

grad student or undergrad? Grad student advice is to ask around about the personality of the prof you're interviewing with. If the prof wants you, then you are gold, nothing else matters. Some profs value statistics and will ask you stats questions for 2 hours, some will just talk to you and get a reading whether or not you're a good team member. Some will grill you for no reason than just to see how you squirm under pressure. Dunno about undergrad interviews though...

To be fair - this was also authorizing a budget and also- as a general rule, nobody really reads the bill. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying they probably didn't really understand what was going on.

If you are going to go the eigenfaces route - remember that it's mostly view dependent - make sure the faces are straight on and not profile :-)

Since it sounds like you work for a business - I'd take a look at using some commercial packages. A lot of these academic classes are awesome but are limited to only open source code. Check around for a good face recognition software and I promise it will perform better than eigenfaces. My work - I am more interested in facial features rather than the identity of the person. I use FaceAPI and FaceLab for that.

One other thing you need to worry about is whether or not your customers are sensitive to storing their identities. It sounds like no since you are already taking snap shots of the users. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
