A friendly nod to California from Washington, another quake state. Remember over the summer when Virginia had their quake and someone posted a picture of the 'devastation'? A plastic picnic table turned over.

I mean, we openly discuss epic shits. I know young men who've gone so far as to swap phone pictures.

What trivial act would you like to ban or make illegal? Personally, I would like to outlaw public speakers who start off by saying, "I can't hear you!" or "Let's try that again!" by danger_mcboomin AskReddit

Go ahead and call your congressman and tell him or her to propose that kind of legislation. See how well that goes over.

I think that's anti-democratic and awfully judgmental of you. Sure, the US Constitution didn't initially hold as high of a standard for enfranchisement as we do now, but the last thing I want is a step backward. Any adult citizen should be able to make their voice heard and express their governance preference at the ballot.

I agree the state of the electorate is depressingly stupid in this country, but setting artificial barriers and reducing people's rights to vote is not the means to improving our democracy. A more involved dialogue can be created with better education and perhaps a required test at the high school graduation level, but directly in front of the ballot is totally unacceptable to me. Teach Americans to understand and appreciate the democratic process - don't alienate them from it.

If you can't read it, you can't effectively vote and those potential voters just stay away from the poles. What invalidates their input, though, aside from their language? How is a basic test too terribly different from this? It imposes a judgement upon would-be voters. Does their opinion truly have less value because of their knowledge? Would you even see a measurable difference in pole results? Does democracy need to suffer for a displeasure for under-education? A better result would be had by improving education of civics.

It can potentially be against noise ordinances, so if your hometown has this issue, look it up.

But the challenges comes in whether it'll protect some while harming others. Then you have to balance the greatest good.

[–]glaciator 3 points4 points ago

Unfortunately, they are. There are plenty of enfranchised citizens who can't read English and don't bother to vote because they have no access to native language materials. You have to keep poles as open as possible to maximize the true democratic nature of your system.

Look man, if it's midnight and there's fucking no one around, I am disinclined to give any kind of shit about the rules. Day time and there's a moderate amount of business going on, I'm orderly.
