Adding new staff to a worker-owned enterprise by lutzjin DebateaCommunist

The 'market' itself is democratic, although this argument is typically rejected by leftists. People who spend money on goods 'vote' for the good/service to exist in society.

Also, a 'democratic market' doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have democratic processes elsewhere in the productive/distributive process of resource allocation. Firms, while worker owned, would still produce based on the demand from other individuals/firms. Imagine, for example, that Apple was a worker owned enterprise. They don't directly produce their goods, they design, brand, and market them. They still pay producers to manufacture their products, and assuming the manufacturer is worker owned, the profits are distributed amongst the workers. Profits are shared between employees at Apple who designed and distributed the goods, and profits are shared between employees at the manufacturing facility who manufactured the goods.

The democratic process, exists within the institution. Suppose a constitutional amendment was passed stating that all currently privately owned firms must be restructured such that stocks in the company are divided equally amongst employees. Given the nature of stocks, every employee has equal say in the structure and organization of the institution and what is done with profits.

If the monetary system was disintegrated, there would be severe limits on economic development, as there would be no way to increase the money supply and allow for worker owned firms to invest in other institutions.

Suppose that another amendment is passed stating that all natural resources in the geographical area of the state are owned equally by the residents of the state. A state owned institution would then extract, process, and sell the resources at a profit. These profits would then be redistributed through the state based on a democratically decided mode of redistribution (building institutions, giving citizens checks, etc.,).

What would be needed in a socialized economy, would be limits on private accumulation of capital. And anything above that limit, would be socialized.

Doesn't the monetary system essentially provide a 'democratic' means of distribution based on actual demand? It bypasses the slow and involved process of the democratic political process which would not be able to keep up with fluctuating changes in demand.

Money exists in order to give individuals liberty over the material goods they purchase. IT allows for goods to be distributed based on demand and suppliers are able to produce specific quantities. In a worker owned enterprise, you can imagine that all of the workers would hold an equal number of shares in the company's stock. Thus, everyone benefits from cooperation. They still produce surplus value and their products are sold for profit, but it is aggregated and redistributed amongst the workers. While the monetary system allows for individuals to have choice over the basic goods they consume according to their personal tastes.

How else would you distribute goods?

I don't understand why socialists/communists have such an opposition to currency used for trade. I believe that the monetary system is relatively efficient as a means of exchange between people in order to satisfy material wants/needs.

My father hasn't smoked for over ten years, but he tells me that he still gets 'cravings'. I think its more of a nostalgia though, that's what has gotten me to start back up again. Especially autumn.

Mental benefits of quitting? by mungscumin stopsmoking

[–]germnor 1 point2 points ago

"Does concentration increase?" Maybe, in so far as you aren't getting up every hour or two to smoke. In the first days, you'll probably see your cognitive functions decline a little bit depending on how debilitating the withdrawals are for you. How much the lack of nicotine overtakes your consciousness.

Twenty-two days man! Don't slip back now! I don't know who did the breaking up, but it sounds like she did. Go for a run. This is simply another test of self control, albeit a much larger one. If you can quit smoking, you can make it through this. No where to go but forward now. You're a free man. Exercise that freedom.

Running ex-smokers, what has your experience been? by germnorin stopsmoking

[–]germnor[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'll admit, I have no previous cardiovascular conditioning and I was never very active in sports past middle school. So, my total lack of quality performance is likely a result of that more than smoking. Also, i ran yesterday and it went a lot better than the day before.

That's a really cool idea. I should contact our quitline and see if they can offer something like that in our area.

Yeah, its strange. I quit smoking cigarettes two days ago, so I'ma wait until next week before I actually fulfill those random impulses.

Going through withdrawals from nicotine is intense, and I am tremendously irritable. The lack of THC hasn't been too bad in the last two days. I still have a little bit of a hard time concentrating and staying on a task for an extended period. If it persists, I'll be going to my psychiatrist to get a prescription of adderal. A few years ago I was diagnosed with ADHD. But, I would prefer to overcome the problem personally rather than through medication.

The two previous attempts I've made at quitting (which lasted roughly four months each) I only wore the patch for two or three days, and kept one in my back pocket just in case.

My father quit smoking about ten years ago, and he says that the urges to have a cigarette never really go away. The nostalgia still pops up every once and a while.
