yup apparently having the chickens land on the half slab is the key...the lava kills the chickens and the drops land safely on the half slab.

Thought you guys might dig this tutorial...it's got a compartment for the baby chicks to hang out until they're fully grown, then they move over into the egg farm. Killed and cooked with a different type of lava blade! In 1.2.5 animals no longer run around when set on fire, which renders most of the netherrack based grills inoperable. This is a working fix!
