I install Linux in my thumb drive because it's pretty much the only OS that would run decently through a removable drive. The learning curve wasn't as bad as what people say (probably because I'm a power user), but all in all I really like the fact that it runs very well out of the box. I was very impressed when it managed to install a complete set of drivers for my notebook. I didn't think it was possible that an OS run off a thumb drive can almost be good enough for everyday use.

Of course it's not all rainbows for Linux. Earlier I had the unpleasant adventure of trying to install the latest GIMP which was not available in the package manager yet. I had to jump through dozens of libraries and dependencies before reaching the space limit on the thumb drive. That wasted a lot of time.

I won't be replacing my Windows anytime soon since I can't live without real games and specialized software on my computer, but Linux is definitely an excellent choice for portable or underspecced systems. If you run servers I don't think you have any other choice though.

Was about to recommend this. An evening playing Mafia is an evening well spent. I prefer the variation where you form a small group of police/seers though, rather than a single one.
