What puzzles you most about politics? by oceansbooksandtrollsin politics

[–]garyp714 0 points1 point ago

What puzzles me is how willfully ignorant people are of their shared recent history, how they ignore truths staring them in the face and how they double down on broken ideologies despite being proven, time and again, to be utterly dishonest and unworkable.

My worst facepalm is the complete inability for people to see things happening beyond the week to week cycles. Things like 'starve the beast' being implemented over the last 40 years, voodoo economics like trickle down being supported over and over and somehow getting people to vote against their own interests under the ruse of 'we will all one day be rich' baloney.

It's the propaganda like this that just hurts my soul. The fact that we can't do shit because people believe this puking pablum makes me sad.

Couldn't just make a interesting point as you did and leave this childish tripe out.

It's like they'd rather Obama was an idealist who got 30% of the vote than a pragmatist who actually wins and gets shit done. It's childish.

This sums up Obama's entire first term...

President Obama is succeeding in spite of the fact that he’s been up against a Republican Party willing to destroy the economy in order to destroy him. by wang-bangerin politics

[–]garyp714 0 points1 point ago

What? How do you develop a presidential candidate?

You build a case for the things you've done and the positions you've held while laying out your plan for leading and for what the future under your leadership would look like.

The GOP has done NOTHING but attack Obama, oppose his policies and demonize the left. This all becomes extremely negative and leaves the party with nothing positive to run on. They are literally left looking like cartoon villains that have no ability to steward or lead the country.

This is also the problem with 'small government' / 'starve the beast' tactics that the Right has been weaseling around with the last 40 years - it literally places the group as destructive, un-serious about advancement and unable/untrustworthy to lead the country.

Anytime you focus all on stopping something else, opposing another viewpoint, you run the risk of coming off as an empty suit with none of your own ideas. Being always negative and oppositional is a losing formula.

Let's also keep perspective on up/downvotes as the whole subject is not as simple as hurt feelings and personal attacks. I write this list with no real intention and in no way am excusing the behavior of some folks in r/politicsr/poetry:

  • up/down votes are an essential feedback mechanism to the reddit algorithm. I personally would never remove the downvote because a) its just a CSS trick and can be gotten around by unclicking the 'use subreddit style' button and b) a subreddit relies on that button to self police trolls, spam and off topic crap.

  • upvotes and downvotes come from many agendas and you can never take them personally. Sometimes someone is having a bad day, sometimes a spammer nails you because he/she thinks it helps their spam rise, sometimes its another user who thinks it helps their post rise above yours...sometimes its someone who really dislikes your post but can't express it.

  • the big thing about downvotes and upvotes is that the reddit algorithm places fake votes on each side to confuse spammers who watch the totals. It thwarts their attempts to game the system with sockpuppets and voting cabals so really, you can never take them too seriously.

  • and mainly its important for us all to thicken our skin a bit and shrug off the voting. The worst thing that hurts me in /r/poetry is when my shit is just plain ignored...even as a mod I find this happen a lot.

  • the biggest problem w/ /r/poetry is the sheer volume of posts and poems and the inability for any kind of consistent commenting and feedback to get generated...there is just too much stuff to navigate.

Not excuses, just some info to add to the discussion.

In Reversal, Obama Urges Super PAC Donations -- "a stark admission that the president can no longer afford to keep the lightly regulated but increasingly influential political organizations at arm's length - even if tarnishes Obama as a hypocrite." by slaterhearstin politics

[–]garyp714 1 point2 points ago

To all you Obama apologists, you can't have your cake and eat it at the same time

Actually, yes we can.

I never fell apart or got terribly upset about the citizen's united decision and I also support Obama. I see it for the awesome rallying point that the decision is and will be for a bi-partisan solution sometime in the near future. In the meantime, with the rules being as they are, everyone has to do what they have to do to survive and win. Anything else would be foolish.

The Koch brothers and other delusional, society destroying right wingers have pledged 100 million to beat Obama...openly and without nary a reservation. So should Obama sit back and rest on his opposition to these super-PACS? LOL!

This is the kind of real world decision making every candidate of every stripe faces constantly. So no, I'm not even conflicted about Obama's decision here. More power to him.

The screwed generation: Libertarian, not liberal by Maxcactusin economy

[–]garyp714 1 point2 points ago

Not just you. The piece felt like a comment in r/libertarian; short on substance, high on rhetoric and while understandable, felt like it really wasn't sure what it was arguing and what the problems really are.

It also smacks of this 'victim-hood' stance I see constantly from Paul supporters that really blows my mind. Maybe it's because I grew up Gen X when articles like this and 'unfair media' assertions were met with conservative derision and 'suck it up' bootstrap mentality. I mean, aren't libertarians suppose to be self-reliant, self-starters and rugged individualists that pull themselves up by their bootstraps despite what the world throws at them? To see this kind of victim stance makes me confused about what these folks actually stand for.

And this is not a slap in the face of libertarians, I like the civil liberties part, its just this morose, 'poor me' attitude seems so contrary in these types of articles and comments.

Fla. Lawmaker Wants To Ban Buying Sweets With Food Stamps by Rottendogin politics

[–]garyp714 3 points4 points ago

You are dead on. Looking at today's modern processed food, some of the items they allow to be bought with food stamps, contains as much hidden sugar (carbs) as candy. Things like cereals, drinks, breads are loaded with processed sugars and carbohydrates that immediately turn to sugars in our body.

Until we improve the 'cheap' foods we allow, making 'sweets' illegal is a slippery and un-nuanced slope.

Fla. Lawmaker Wants To Ban Buying Sweets With Food Stamps by Rottendogin politics

[–]garyp714 -1 points0 points ago

you can still buy everything required to make a cake.

Which all contain huge amounts of 'sweets'. And how do we define 'sweets'? Things that contain sugar? How much sugar?

And how about the fact that modern processed food contain all kinds of massive doses of sugars in the form of carbohydrates? Things like modern processed breads, cereals, drinks, frozen foods, etc all contain as much sugar as a piece of candy in some cases. Where do we draw the line?

Fla. Lawmaker Wants To Ban Buying Sweets With Food Stamps by Rottendogin politics

[–]garyp714 6 points7 points ago

Problem is that almost all processed, cheap end foods now have massive doses of sugar by way of carbohydrates, in them. Things like bread, pasta, rice, cereals, potato products and any kids drink all contain so much sugar or carbohydrates that turn to sugar, the food stamps would fund basically whole foods and those are expensive. Cheap foods are cheap because we subsidize corn and sugar, etc.
