When and why would you replace/upgrade your pickups? by LowHangingTesticlein Guitar

[–]gall0wsp0le 1 point2 points ago

It's personal taste, and sometimes something can happen that will make you want to alter your guitar's sound. When I got a Carvin Bolt for instance, I noticed it had much more output and bottom end compared to my then stock Am. Std. Fender Strat. I had also been interested in Rio Grande pickups for years, so I finally took the plunge and put their Big Bottom set into my Strat. I was very pleased with the result. The Bolt still has a darker sound but the Strat now has more of an old Strat sound. The previous, stock pickups were just milquetoast in comparison.

It doesn't look very much like the X division belt to me. But the important thing is, WWE brought the right belt back.

[–]gall0wsp0le 0 points1 point ago

Actually, I didn't know that. It's hard to keep track of that stuff with 60+ years of stories. I really loved the movie's touch of commissioning him, because battlefield commissions were still used in that era, and considering he's a Super Soldier, I can understand the Army promoting him over O-1 and O-2. But his CO really needs to work better at his promotion packages (j/k).

Fellow Batman fans: If you were given the reigns of the next batch of Batman movies set in a DC cinematic universe, what would you do? by upgrayedd69in batman

[–]gall0wsp0le 6 points7 points ago

I guess what I'd do is something I'd call Batman: the Golden Age. I'd place Batman's lifeline within the same original run he had back in the 40s, so his "debut" would be in 1940, he would've been born in the '20s, and his era would've been the '40s and '50s. It would meld some of the Earth 2 elements with Golden Age Batman traits, but still retain the more serious, gritty aspects of the character and his world.

The point of the movies would be to just show Batman in action and let the character speak for himself. It wouldn't be a deconstruction of the character or a, "What does it mean to be a hero," type of thing. There wouldn't be more rehashing of their origins. It's assumed the audience knows who these characters are and just want to see them in action doing what they do best.

Movie 1: Batman is already active alongside Robin. He's in the middle of his war against the mob and fights Thorne as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. Black Mask appears and the False Face Society takes over Gotham's underworld. There'd be some one-off references to Gotham's best serving the nation in WWII to explain why the police force is broken down and corrupt. Bruce isn't off fighting because he did 3 years in the Army after high school in Europe (Where he got a lot of his education in criminology from someone he knew there). So the central plot is Batman and Robin trying to keep the city from going over the edge due to the machinations of the mob, Thorne and the False Face Society. Epic gun fights and fist fights ensue. At the end, a guy starts leaving riddles at the scenes of his crimes. That leads to.....

Movie 2: Batman and Robin battle the Riddler. The Riddler lays out tons of mindfuck traps and riddles to baffle the shit out of them, as he is wont to do. We're moving into postwar America, we beat the Nazis and the boys are coming home. Gordon is able to recruit a better police force. Batman exposes Thorne and he is admonished and resigns in disgrace. In the background Batman reads reports of a crafty cat burglar who seems to steal just for fun, and leads cops on car chases but always gets away. Batman and Robin beat the Riddler, and learn that the Joker is back in town. That leads to.....

Movie 3: Batman and Robin battle the Joker, who has recruited the Penguin, because Cobblepot is loaded and will fund all of Joker's crazy Joker gadgets and schemes. Penguin runs the Iceberg so we get to see Matches Malone employed to go into the seedy Gotham underground to get the low-down on how Joker is facilitating his crazy scheme. As Matches, Bruce finds out who Catwoman is, while Robin meets her face to face. She eventually helps out Batman and Robin, but Batman puts her in hand cuffs anyway for being a thief. Batman and Robin are left wondering what will happen next, when a newspaper headline describes a defected German scientist perfecting a "freeze ray" that will help the US fight the Russians.

Movie 4: Victor Friese is recast as a German scientist who defected to the US side in the war. His wife is sick, he developed cryogenics but the US gov't wanted a freeze ray, so he built one. Then he snapped and started using it to commit acts of terrorism and crime. Batman and Robin go after him. We're in the '50s now so it's the Cold War era. Gordon's getting old and the next guy in line isn't as keen about having Batman's help. Robin's getting older and is thinking about college and not wanting to wear the red tunic and pixie boots anymore. Batman's in his late 30s/early 40s and doesn't know how much longer he can go, and isn't sure what to do with the rest of his life. Catwoman appears again and this opens up what might happen in the future. Mr. Freeze is beaten.

Ending montage sees Robin retire and go to college, Batman defeating various villains on his own, then retiring and settling down with a reformed Selina Kyle. Then years later a young woman named the Huntress appears in 1970s Gotham with a male cohort named Red Robin. The end.

TDKR: Catwoman - Help me understand. by croagunkin batman

[–]gall0wsp0le 3 points4 points ago

I've only seen trailers but from what I can tell, she's mirroring what she has become in the comics. Catwoman is really hard to pin down as a character. She's been retconned a lot too, which doesn't help matters. Anyway in the trailers Catwoman appears to be a herald of sorts for Bane, but at some point morphs into being Batman's ally and potential love interest. Like in the comics, she does things her own way and for her own interest.

Personally that's why I think the Catwoman character is intriguing, but at worst her ambiguity can make her do things for the sake of doing them, which cheapens the character and is usually the result of bad writing. I don't think they'll be doing that with her though. And she definitely won't be a put-upon secretary mysteriously revived by cats after being pushed out of a window.

There's also an unused Intercontinental design floating around somewhere. It looks like it was supposed to succeed the Attitude Era IC belt, because it has a big, white WWE logo on the facade.

Cena vs. Show will be an over-booked mess of a shitpile just like every Cena main event has been this year, aside from Cena vs The Rock where they made sure to hit all the spots people wanted to see.

Bryan vs Punk will be awesome and might top Over the Limit, but may hopefully see something happen with the whole AJ angle, and maybe something involving Kane.

Sheamus vs Del Rio will be competently done but no one cares about ADR. They care about Ricardo and Ricardo doesn't wrestle.

Christian vs Rhodes won't have any real build-up but it will be a decent match.

Orton vs Jericho will be a sleeper because nobody will expect it to be as good as it will be.

Can weight lifting theoretically cover all your bases for fitness? by keyser12in Fitness

[–]gall0wsp0le 1 point2 points ago

Higher intensity stuff will do more for your cardiovascular system compared to slower weight training. Guys who work out with kettlebells all the time, like the dudes on r/kettlebell, often do higher intensity, higher repetition work outs that condition strength but put more emphasis on endurance, and so the heart rate goes up faster and stays higher longer than say, barbell training with heavy weight where you take up to 1-5 minutes of rest between sets.

You can cover the bases with weight training, but how you train will affect certain aspects of the outcome more than others. If you use lower weight, more repetitions and take less rest, you'll get that "pumped" feeling that will make you sweat and jack up your heart rate, but you won't see the same gains if you increased weight, lowered repetitions and increased rest time.

so, which branch was Capt. America "drafted" from? by Masstadonin comicbooks

[–]gall0wsp0le 3 points4 points ago

As far as I can tell, his origin goes that he was rejected by the Army when he tried to enlist, but was later drafted by the Army to participate in the Super Soldier program. Then depending on which version, he was commissioned a Captain in the Army and his codename was Capt. America. I know the movie makes clear he was commissioned as an officer, but I don't know if the comics do. It's a great detail, imo, because technically if they wanted him to go into battle and lead troops at the company level, it makes sense they'd make him a legit officer.

Poor guy. All these years later and he has yet to make O-4 (Major, the next rank up from Captain, in case you were wondering).

What is r/Guitar's opinion of Line 6? by Individual4815in Guitar

[–]gall0wsp0le 0 points1 point ago

I had the Pod 2.0 for a while. I think that many of the tones they claimed to emulate didn't really sound like those amps. They could nail a good clean tone, a good metal one and a good hard rock one, and you could get some interesting tones on the various Fender/Vox clone settings, but again, they didn't actually sound like the real thing, at least not to me.

All that aside, I never had issues with it, it was super easy to use, and very easy to plug into any interface, be it bass amp, guitar amp, whatever. I actually liked it most through my practice bass amp, honestly. It was perhaps due to the bass amp being solid state so it didn't clip or break up at lower volumes or color the tones of the Pod; or not, I'm not really sure. I just liked it better that way.

Besides the Pod, I did mess around with the old Flextones and the Pod Pro on occasion. For while there while I was at Guitar Center, I swear the Pod Pro hooked into a Mesa power amp going through a Marshall 4x12 was one of the best sounding rigs in the entire store. It had a lot of balls and the various overdrive, dirty and metal settings could really rip.

If I ever got a digital set up again though, I might go towards Peavey. For my money, Peavey does a better job with solid state due to the their whole Transtube thing, and they employ it with their Vypyr amps. If I wasn't so happy with my Fender Hot Rod I'd track down an old Bandit 112.
