My father was in a shitty part of town (Houston, 3rd Ward). This was in the mid-80s and he was driving a Toyota Cressida. He was an insurance salesman and worked for a company that served the lower socioeconomic level of clientele. He pulls up outside of a customers home. He is approached by two men on his driver's side door and his window is cracked. They tell him to get out of the car while pointing a gun at him. One of the men has his face right up on the window. My dad opens the car door but smashes it into the man's face. He goes down. He hops out and there is a 2x4 on the ground so he picks it up and starts beating the shit out of these two guys. They don't get up. Now my father is a s 5'9", 120lb man at the time. He's also white in a predominately black neighborhood but most of the people know my dad. The police came and twenty people gave statements in my father's defense stating that he was defending himself. Both men were taken to the hospital but one was not expected to live through the night. The police said if he died then they would have to book my dad on manslaughter charges but then they charges would be dropped based on the number of eye witness accounts. The man did live through the night but he was a vegetable.
