Olympus 75mm f/1.8 announced, links in text. by csbphotoin photography

  • m43 lenses have to be sharper and more optically perfect than lenses on full frame, because of the higher pixel density. (Hence complaints of the new 36mp nikons "out resolving" their lenses)

  • They're new lenses that have been designed from scratch. They have to make their money back.

  • Prices will drop in time. Market value is almost always lower than the announcement RRP.

  • They didn't just take an existing 45mm lens and slap it on a new mount. These are native lenses. The micro43 45mm is more comparable to a regular 85mm f1.8 than a regular 50mm f1.8

I have no idea how this CVS place of yours develops their film, but it looks like maybe the film wasn't wound onto a spool properly.. but that should only apply to doing it by hand :S

If it was done in a machine, I can't imagine a silly amateur mistake like that happening.

Why do Panasonic, Leica, FujiFilm, Samsung and Nikon censor their GPS cameras? by nomdewebin photography

[–]frostickle 4 points5 points ago

So basically this.

Chinese legislature prohibits GPS usage. Sony ignores this, but everyone else disables in-body GPS when you're in China.

How do they know you're in China?

It's a freakin' GPS.

Anyways, I wonder why Sony doesn't give a fuck?

Um.. Like, meet up IRL?

I don't see the need for specific mentors unless you want to meet up IRL.

If it's just online, we have the weekly questions thread where everyone bugs everyone about things. It's much easier to get answers there than messaging one person all the time about things.

Well yes, I don't expect pros to be trying to do photo work on m43. Which is why I'm a little confused at them releasing pro lenses for m43. I'm super happy about it, yes! But I fear it may not be that profitable for them.. (This also leads to the lenses having a higher mark up.. which in turn lowers sales..)

But anyways, I don't expect pros to shoot professional work on m43.

Video work yes, the AF100 is fantastic, as is the GH2. But for photo work you'll want full frame or medium format. Unless size and weight is a serious, serious factor. Like if you're climbing mount everest or something. (In which case, weather sealed OM-D FTW! What's it's minimum temperature??)

This obviously isn't her first rodeo.

I wonder how much direction the photographer was giving, and exactly what he/she said? Or if the model was told what was wanted beforehand and she just went with it?

It probably depends on the people involved. I've never shot a professional model before, although I'm friends with some. Actually, now that I think about it, I've never spoken my model friends about photography at all. Odd.

Save it. Then change their default homepage to the file.

It'll keep coming up until they work out how to change their homepage.

But you're not born a pro photographer. And you don't suddenly decide "Hey I want to be a pro photographer" without having touched a camera before.

By the time you're earning money by doing photography, you must have learnt on a camera. Hence, a pro photographer should magically already have a body and lens when they start making pictures for a living :)

Because before they started making pictures for a living, they were already shooting photos for fun!

A pro looking for a system to get into..?

What kind of pro doesn't already have a system..?

At the last wedding I went to as a guest, the pros were shooting Canon but also m43. They had a GH2 with 7-14mm on a tripod in the corner, and one of them was shooting with a AF100 with 14-140mm.

It seems to me that m43 does video better than dSLRs, and it is more attractive for your own personal happy snaps. (Smaller, easier to carry around.)

As for cheaper... There are cheap things like the EPL1 and 14-42mm kit lenses, 17mm prime, etc.

And then there's quality stuff. 20mm f1.7 is more expensive than a 35mm f1.8 for APS-C, but not by much, and it's definitely worth it. (smaller, wider field of view, etc.)

AF is getting faster.. but yeah, I probably wouldn't shoot sports on m43.

Used prices for m43 is lower as well :-)

I never pay retail.

Ah, but is it an amateur system??? They're obviously trying to release serious pro lenses in the hopes of turning into an (at least semi-) pro system.

A system that you can work with. Rather than just something for your happy snaps.

See my to a comment above..

Yes it's weird to have professional lenses being made for a system that has a smaller sensor. But I'm betting (as is Olympus, Panasonic, Leica, etc.) that sensor tech will improve in time, until the difference between FF and m43 is only noticeable by pixelpeepers on the internet and the pro-lenses will allow m43 to win the mirroless fight against Pentax, Sony, Samsung, Nikon, etc.

Also, m43 is a the best system to learn photography on! It's cheaper than getting a dSLR, and when you want to upgrade, there are lots of lenses!

  1. Shoot some fashion or sports or wildlife with your m43 to build your portfolio/practise.
  2. Show off your portfolio.
  3. Get hired, use the company gear.
  4. ????
  5. Profit!

...and if the company doesn't care enough to provide you with gear... they probably won't realise that you're shooting on m43.

The d700 is $2349

A 135mm f2.0 prime costs $1369

$2000 for the m43 setup vs. $3700 for nikon.

Full frame is almost double the price. And probably 3-4 times the weight.

[–]frostickle 3 points4 points ago

It looks really nice, and of course something like that is going to cost $1000. But I don't think I'll be getting it.

I already have the $300 Olympus 45mm f1.8, and I can't imagine needing both unless I suddenly start shooting indoor sports. Perhaps fashion shows might also find it useful? But they should be well lit enough that the 45-200mm zoom would be better...

Compare photos shot at around 90mm with photos shot at around 150mm.

It seems to me that most of the 150mm shots could have been taken just as easily at 90mm.

There are only a few reasons to get the 75mm f1.8 instead of the 150mm f1.8.

So.. yeah, I think it's great to have even more lenses in the m43 lineup (SUCK IT NEX! AHAHHAHAHA) but if I'm going to drop another $1000 on a lens anytime soon, it's going to be on the 12-35mm f2.8

And I think that's how 9 out of 10 m43 users will shop.

tl;dr

75mm (equivalent to 150mm on full frame) is a pretty difficult prime to use. It is not for the average user. The 45mm f1.8 will take similar photos for most people, and is much more affordable.

/r/photoclass2012a is for you :)

As for white balance, I leave mine on auto, and 90% of the time that's fine.

There are a few situations in which you'll want to control it, most of the time auto is fine.

Shooting in raw also gives you more flexibility when it comes to white balance, because you apply it on your computer, rather than letting your camera choose the white balance for you.

Oh opps, I was supposed to reply to a higher post.

But I don't see them quitting the APS-C dSLR market, because they already have a lot of DX lenses.

But, in reply to your suggestion of a F-mount mirrorless... that would be silly. Because the mount includes the flange distance. F-mount lenses will always be 46.5mm away from the sensor.

Pentax made a mirrorless that uses their dSLR lenses... I don't think it's doing very well. I've never seen one in the wild, but it is early days.

And while I admit that Nikon would do better than Pentax with this strategy, because of their market dominance, I think it is a bad idea, because you're just throwing away inherent the flange distance advantage of the mirrorless format.

(Which allows you to design much smaller bodies and lenses, and you don't need retrofocal glass on shorter focal lengths)

It might be nice, but I don't see it happening, because Nikon already has so many DX lenses out there.
