I think it's just that specific areas of your tongue taste certain tastes better. I feel like I taste salt much better on the tip of my tongue than I do in the back of it.

I wish you would give is more back story and maybe what meds your friend is on. We don't know the full story. Why did counseling screw her up? How many times has she attempted suicide before? Does she cut?

Also, don't just limit yourself to 'psychiatrist' or 'psychologist.' They have different ways of looking at your issues, as do counselors. Psychiatrists will take a more medical approach and encourage medication. Psychologists are good for testing. Counselors are good for teaching coping skills (without or in conjunction with meds) and personal empowerment.

Calling it a 'loony ward' just reinforces the idea that it won't help. I work in one of these establishments, and have spoken with many suicidal people, who are ALL glad that they came to this "loony ward."

Your friend probably doesn't see that it will get better, and thinks that she'll feel this way for the rest of her life. It's likely that that isn't true, and while I've no doubt she is suffering right now, the natural chaos of her own hormones will taper themselves out as she ages.

Instead of giving your friend a "dignified death," give her HOPE and a chance at a normal life that will last far beyond 17 or 18 years.

When people would walk in 3 minutes until the store closed, and while checking out, "I bet you're ready to go home, huh?" Yes I am, jerk, and you just made me stop my closing duties so your lazy butt could buy some Pedigree dog food that you could have gotten at Wal-Mart for nearly half the price.

-We were open for Easter. I can't count the number of people who would come in and while checking out, say, "Wow, I can't believe you guys are open on Easter. You must be disappointed not to be with your family!" I hate you. The only reason we're open on Easter is because we have customers who come in on Easter.
