Why do I get shorter when I go towards the deep end of the pool? by Battle_Walrusin shittyaskscience

[–]flabbergasted1 2 points3 points ago

You dissolve. Just like if you put a block of salt in water it will get smaller, when humans go in water they get smaller. If you look down you can even see your lower body dissolving away wobbledly in the water.

r/foretell is now open. Predict the future, if you get it right, then repost your original prediction, watch as everyone marvels at your ability to tell the future by kingvitamanin newreddits

I think this is a great idea. It probably won't get much traction until one of the predictions comes true, but consider me subscribed.

My 7 year old son told me (a single father) that he wants to be a girl and that he's always felt this way. Is he transgender? What should I do? by confusedfather28in AskReddit

[–]flabbergasted1 1 point2 points ago

Guy here. For a couple years when I was a kid (maybe age 4-7) I grew out my hair to my butt, dressed almost exclusively in pink, played barbies with my older sister, etc. When I was at a restaurant with my sister and mother the waiter would ask "what would you ladies like." I had friends at school who took that for granted (in my experience, kids are a surprisingly accepting, having not had gender stereotypes drilled into them yet) and were surprised when I eventually cut my hair.

I'm not sure I ever flat-out wanted to be a girl, but I'm definitely glad I was permitted to do what I wanted with my appearance and choices. My (anecdotal and non-professional) advice would be to do what my parents did — allow me to act/dress how I like and not treat it as anything troublesome/serious.

(Post-puberty, I'm 100% confident in my gender. I should also say that at that age I was borderline depressed/frustrated in life for non-gender-related reasons.)

We all know where the biceps and the triceps are located. But where is the "ceps"? by henriquesecklerin shittyaskscience

You are thinking of the uniceps, which (like unicorns and unicycles) is imaginary.

Explain why Gould is someone you would want to stock up on? by scurvebeardin shittyaskscience

[–]flabbergasted1 0 points1 point ago

You will have to be more specific with the name in your question, as for the time being science has reached no consensus on a universally-recognized Gould standard.

What are the thread counts of the fabrics of space and time? by headlessCamelCasein shittyaskscience

[–]flabbergasted1 2 points3 points ago

The exact number is unknown. There are many scientists at NASA racing to see who can count all the threads first, but since they all want to win they spend much time distracting each other with decoy threads or faked emergency phone calls from their spouses. The field of study devoted to counting threads is referred to as "String Theory."

How can 1 be the loneliest number if it's always being carried? by TrollErgoSumin shittyaskscience

[–]flabbergasted1 2 points3 points ago

The carrying is actually a form of bullying the bigger numbers do because 1 has no friends to protect himself. The number with the greatest bullying tendency is 7, who has on multiple occasions been charged with cannibalism.

What is the Speed of Smell? by Johnzorsin shittyaskscience

[–]flabbergasted1 0 points1 point ago

A group of scientists once tried to deduce this by having a subject run faster and faster until he reached the speed of smell, at which point he would no longer smell anything behind him. Unfortunately, all the observers experienced an aromic boom at this point (much like the sonic boom when a jet passes the speed of sound) and the smell of the runner's cologne magnified several thousand times paralyzed all observers and prevented observations from being recorded.

If things we forget go in one ear and right out the other, could I have a perfect memory if I covered one of my ears? by Throwaway_4_opinionsin shittyaskscience

[–]flabbergasted1 0 points1 point ago

This tactic has been proposed several times in the past, but the forgotten things simply find other parts of the face to escape from. If you shut your mouth and close your eyes, for example, you will sneeze the idea out.
