It can be a lonely existence. With no single umbrella organization to bring non-theists together, individuals can feel isolated, compounded by the fact that the various non-theist organizations are often fragmented in their approaches. The Reason Rally was meant to solve this problem. by blackstar9000in RepublicOfAtheism

[–]fishcat 0 points1 point ago

Why would having a single national or international umbrella organization make atheists less lonely in a practical, everyday way? I mean, I've definitely heard the argument that people who are used to getting a lot of social interaction through their church would like to find something similar with fellow atheists, but that's something to be solved by regional organizations.

That's true--I guess it's unfair of me to lump all philosophy in with theology. "Imaginationpoints" seems to sum religion up pretty well. :)

Well, yeah, that was the point of the last panel--with each new datapoint, your theory gets more truth-shaped, but ultimately the Truth as philosophers would have it can never be reached. The great thing about science is that it gets us closest, though, since philosophy and theology aren't even generating datapoints.

Feminism is about equal rights--I honestly have no idea what exaliftin is talking about.

[–]fishcat 0 points1 point ago

Well, you know your parents best, but to me that says they're not going to react well to hearing you're an atheist. It's okay for you to wait a few years before you tell them. Plus, it's easier to have adult conversations with your parents once they've seen you be independent. It sucks that you have to lie to them, but you'll get through it--the internet's here for you. Anyway, congrats on your new rationality!

[–]fishcat 2 points3 points ago

Try telling your best friend first--someone you know will support you even if they don't agree.

Have you stopped going to church yet? See how they react to that, first. You could tell them you need the extra time to do homework or something, and if they're cool with that there's a better chance they'll be cool with your beliefs. Keep in mind that even if they don't kick you out or hurt you, there are lots of ways parents can make your life hell--anything from taking away your car to making you go to counseling to not paying for college. Right now your education is the most important thing, so focus on that.

And if you didn't learn them already, now you can get the real facts on evolution, geology and sex ed. ;)

Here's a blog post about one of the most famous examples, Michfest. This stuff generally comes from second-wave radical feminists and is in pretty clear opposition to current mainstream feminist thought. It's something we definitely need to be aware of and work to address, but it isn't a legit criticism of feminism a whole, and bringing it up as such is, like poffin says, classic derailing.

But yeah--it's happened, it still happens, and it's pretty disgusting.

Totally! Such a sweet, sad story--the perfect counterpoint to Beren and Luthien.

Here in the US, people have made lists of all the rights and responsibilities married couples have--apparently there are hundreds. Maybe there's one for Australia that you could show him? Although it probably won't help much; he sounds like an asshole. And if your state has civil unions, you might also be able to find reports of those unions not being recognized the way they're supposed to, as a demonstration of why they're just a stepping stone and not a good permanent alternative to marriage. Your best bet is probably just to move to Canada, though. ;)

Indian skeptic charged with blasphemy for exposing "miracle"; a Jesus statue appeared to have water drip from its feet, but he identified the source of the water (a drainage near a washing room) and the mechanism how it reached Jesus feet (capillary action) by mepperin skeptic

...because there are Christians in India? I think some lady named Mother Teresa used to hang out over there.

Here, look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_India#Religious_demographics

India is (at least nominally) a secular country, and the blasphemy law some other people have quoted in this thread doesn't name any specific religion. Obviously, the law shouldn't be on the books at all, but that's another argument.

There isn't a strict rule, but to me, referring to an adult (post-puberty, post-school) female as a "girl" in a piece of journalism is inappropriate. I'd say that in high school, (14-18) "girl" is fine; in college (18-22) it gets iffy; and after that it should always be "woman" unless you're good friends. I'm not the best judge of age, but these women looked like they were in their mid-twenties--definitely adults and probably not still in school. Hope that helps?

Edit: Oh, the issue here is that it's rare to call a male a "boy" after age 18.

Why does the article keep referring to them as "girls"? :P Still, this is completely awesome.

[request] This may be too soon, but are there any movies in which 3D is not used as a gimmick (old red-blue 3D included)? by Courteous_Redditorin MovieSuggestions

[–]fishcat 4 points5 points ago

Define gimmick? Arguably, any effects technology is a gimmick--I mean, how many stories really need color? The two best uses of 3D I've seen are Avatar and Coraline, if that helps...and Coraline is actually a good movie.

Feminism and womanism by unitarianin AskFeminists

[–]fishcat 4 points5 points ago

OThomson isn't exactly wrong, but keep in mind that this sub gets a lot of antifeminist commenters, and I think they might be one of them. (If not, my apologies.) Feminism makes a very strong point of valuing women's perspectives, obviously, and most feminist writers write from women's perspectives because they are women. I'd say feminism asks men who are speaking as feminists to acknowledge women's perspectives rather than adopt them. (Which doesn't seem possible, and is pointless anyway--women can represent their own perspectives.) I tend to agree with you that a man starting a sentence with "speaking as a man" seems pretty redundant.

It's probably less about persuading Santorum and more about persuading potential voters, though. A lot of people who call themselves pro-life might end up terminating a pregnancy like this, anyway--even Sarah Palin has talked publicly about how she considered aborting her son with Down's. Convince people that Santorum's position is too extreme, and they won't vote for him--it seemed to work that way in that 2010 senate race in Colorado.
