That sounds fantastic. I'm interested in evolutionary forensic psychology so not up my area, but I will have some neuroscience in my graduate future. Sounds awesome, glad you love it. Good luck!

I am at work and not looking to read tooooo much, but I just had a talk with my officemate about wanting healthcare reform vs wanting a particular healthcare bill to pass. I need more info.

Thanks!

What is your most traumatizing childhood memory? by [deleted]in AskReddit

He needed help, that's for sure. My parents eventually forced counseling on him when he was 14 because he had pulled a hunting rifle on our younger brother in my dad's apartment. The counseling did nothing. My younger brother and I were constantly terrorized, whether it was me being chased through the house with a golf club or the younger one being kicked to the ground for rolling his eyes.

He dropped out of high school when he was 16 and our mom put him into Job Corps, which introduced him to fellow drug users who taught him about making his own acid and such. After graduating Job Corps (paid someone to take his tests for him, from what I've been told) he joined the Navy. He went to the psych people during boot camp and got himself dishonorably discharged. His story on his reasoning has varied over the years.

To date, he is working at a sandwich shop where our mom is the store manager and now has moved out of the house into a trailer with a douche of a roommate. He is 26.

I was about 8, making my older brother about 11. I was the first one home after school that day and decided to work on my soccer skills. My brothers were faster than me so I had to be a better goal kicker in order to compete. I took my older brother's hockey net from the cement driveway and turned it around, leaving it on the cement. I took a few shots, lost in my youthful athleticism.

Next thing I know, my older brother has run up behind me and punches me in the back. I fall to the ground, face first, and he jumps on top. He grabs the back of my head, twisting his fingers into my hair, and proceeds to smash my head into the ground with all his might. Over and over. I remember thinking I was lucky that it was on the grass (which was matted into dirt by the end) and not the cement driveway that was inches away from my forehead.

I don't remember how long it lasted. I remember lying inside on our dark blue couch, on my stomach. My older sister is applying peroxide to the cuts and she's crying. I'm silent, staring into nothingness. My mom comes home and my sister starts screaming about my brother losing it again. My mom asks me if I'm ok, and I remember no pain or sadness, but the tears wouldn't stop falling from my eyes. I just kept staring into nothingness, wondering why I was crying. My mom asked if I wanted some ibuprofen but I said nothing. I slept on the couch that night.

There were a number of run-ins with my older brother, but this one stands out the most to me because of how vivid it still is in my mind. I've also thought about it after talks with neurologists over the years. I've had migraines since I was 10 and recently found out I have both severe TMJ disorder and moderate scoliosis. I can't help but wonder if they're all related to childhood injuries.

employed of reddit, how much did your college GPA really affect your career choices and path? by jive_turkeyin AskReddit

I worked throughout college, studied abroad, double majored with a minor, had teaching assistantships, internships, and graduated with honors. And I did read every book.

I made sure to get my shit together so that I could still drink and not feel like I should have studying the whole time.

I studied criminology and Spanish, graduated in May 2009. The job that I applied for (and currently have) would only take applications from those with a 3.5 or above. I saw this requirement on about 30% of the applications I completed (over 500 over the summer before my hire in August) and another 50% said it had to be over 3.0. It's a rough market for recent grads, but if you have job experience-certainly helps. And a high GPA matters for some companies, depending on your field. It shows you can dedicate yourself and put in some serious hard work.

I'm a fan of shower sex, actually. My boyfriend is generally between me and the water, so it works out.

My father once told me that the meaning of life, as far as he could figure out, was to give ourselves away. In numerous small ways, I have taken this to heart and consider bettering myself as a way of improving my gift to others. The more I learn, the more I can share and contribute.

I've had the same dreams quite a bit, but in different ways. Like I_divided_by_0- said, it's like you "rewind" and try again. Sometimes I lie down in bed and think about what I want to dream and then slowly drift off and work from there. Sometimes I just fall asleep and end up somewhere in a dream-and at some point I think, "Alright, well let's do THIS" and I do whatever.

It does effect how I wake up, I think, but I guess I can't compare it to much else. There are times when I definitely do not want to wake up, like when I'm fighting bad guys or speaking Spanish at a bar. And I know I'm starting to wake up and I think, "Fuck, fuck, no, stop it, I'm not done!"

And other times I want to wake up and I can't, like there was this one time that I was basically in a zombie movie but the group of survivors I was with were really dumb instead of helpful. I'd lock doors with zombies behind them and a few days later they'd say, "They're probably dead/gone, let's try to go this way again" and I'd get really upset and have to go save them or stop them from such silly moves. And I kept thinking, "This is getting fucking old, I don't want to do this anymore" but I couldn't wake up...I wonder now if I could have changed to a new dream? I don't think I've ever gone "ok, new dream" and jumped into a new scenario. I work with the scenarios I start with, sometimes presented to me and other times created.

Does that make sense at all?

How rare is lucid dreaming? I didn't know that most people don't know they're dreaming while they're dreaming. When my boyfriend discovered I'm a lucid dreamer, he got super excited and wanted me to try all kinds of stuff. I just generally know I'm dreaming and do what I like in my dreams, it's always been that way.

I've had migraines for years, and get the aura, the vomiting, the works. It's awful. But every few months or so (sometimes 3 times in a month), I get the cluster headache. With my migraines, I get symptoms before the head pain 5-15 hours ahead of time and it sucks knowing that it's coming for you. But I still fear the cluster headaches more. They come for you in your fucking sleep and makes you want to die for hours.

Same here, you wake up with it...and you think only of how to rip your eye out of its socket...because that seems like it would do something-anything.

Where did you get this assessment of DC? We are paying less for our apartment in DC than we paid in Arlington and we're connected to everything now. And I assume neighbors pay similar prices for rent.
