How Intellectual Property Destroyed Men's Shaving | x-post from r/austrian_economics by facelesseggin wicked_edge

[–]facelessegg[S] 0 points1 point ago

I agree with you. The tone of the article is a bit dramatic. However, I think the real issue is not how the patent process "changed" shaving, but that it simply kept competitors out of an evolving market. The only really change we would have seen in shaving is a few more logos and slightly cheaper cartridges. I should have stated my thoughts after submitting the article.

I want to give a short (4-5 min) speech on the scale of the universe. What do you recommend? by UncleGravityin Astronomy

[–]facelessegg 0 points1 point ago

This is probably a little late. However, since you're giving a speech, I would paraphrase some quotes from Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. His usage of words helps to vividly imagine the scale of everything around us. You'll find what you need if skim through the first two chapters on Google Books.

Ron Paul Now Leading in New Iowa Poll by mmorri24in politics

I'm also quite interested in the consequences regarding his views on how equality and liberty work.

That's a pretty vague interest. However, to entertain the idea, I submit that only the government has the responsibility to treat persons as equals. Currently, incarceration rates aren't proportional with the illegal substance possession rates among certain demographics. Confronting the War on Drugs would contribute to solving any continued abuse of minorities under this system. This is only one example of liberty promoting equality.

Before someone argues that governments should legislate equality from its citizens, just realize that it's party leadership pandering to voters. Businesses, through dress codes and the right to refuse service to anyone, will enforce just that. Let racist establishments starve financially. However, we promote racism through legislation that creates distinct preferences of race and class. Are we really equal if the law treats us differently depending on our race, marital status, sexual preference, number of children, income, age, or sex? That's a hard argument to win.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Ron Paul: "We'd be much stricter on pollution problems" by unknown_entityin ronpaul

To build a permanent structure in the United States, nearly every city or county will require a permit to be issued. For larger commercial and industrial projects, a board will typically present public hearings that are open to input and discussion from local citizens. Even if a permit is issued, where the potential for hazardous use of another individual's private property exists, an appeal process is normally available.

EDIT: I'm just recalling this information from my childhood. I followed my father to a hearing regarding the sale of property to a business that wasn't in the interests of several people. However, most of this process might have dealt with rezoning the property from residential to commercial.

ever been to the 3rd world?

Yes, I've been to many countries. I never implied that government should not exist. In fact, I support many government institutions and their roles. However, to assume that (the lack of) government spending is solely responsible for the state of a society is a fallacy. This image (in my opinion) reached the front page in response the current economic crisis. It's akin to wanting a bigger paycheck to continue wasteful spending. More money sounds great, but our current spending should be assessed and modified prior to making financial requests.

This argument assumes that governments can responsibly spend, even with increased funds through taxation.
