Dodgers president trying to bring the Winter Classic to LA? by snappyjin hockey

They tend to choose major media markets to get the highest TV ratings, with consideration of regional rivals. So in-division rivals + major market - best bet would be LA versus San Jose.

Did anyone hear Doc yell, "Goodnight nurse!!" or am I crazy? by matt420therosein hockey

[–]evildeadxsp 1 point2 points ago

He gets so lost in an obscure anecdote that he forgets he's calling a game.

While I don't agree with you completely - I think you may be onto something here. Doc frequently sputters about some random thing and misses calling the live action. Sometimes it's frustrating as hell.

But the man's vocabulary alone makes him one of the best in all of sports.

Who do you think they would play? Maybe this year's Stanley Cup Final repeat for 2014?

NYR Mark Messier 18yr Anniversary. Pretty cool (unlikely to repeat, but still cool) by pnnm0077in hockey

[–]evildeadxsp 16 points17 points ago

Another thing - apparently the NY media blew it up. According to Mike Keenan, Messier wasn't guaranteeing a win just saying "we have to do this, this and this... and we'll win tonight." - the NY Post shortened that to - "We'll win tonight."

Despite all of this, it just makes the feat by Messier all the greater. He wakes up that morning and sees a newspaper with his guarantee on it, probably facepalms, then goes out for the game and steps up to the task. Scores 3 goals to win it for them. Respect to the captain.

With the Coyotes out, the stanley cup is guaranteed to be lifted by an American captain. by JohnnysGotHisDerpin hockey

The rules do in fact state that it was a good goal.

It's controversial yes (and a bit of a stretch)- but it is a legitimate argument. This is similar to what occurred with Calgary in 2004. Haters are always gonna hate.

I would be very interested in that.

Television ad is way more disruptive though. It very literally replaces the piece of value the user is their for. Facebook ads are small and minor and demoted to the side (and rarely get prominent placement).

You can actually block YouTube ads with ad block. It blocks ad servers, so you can block Google ad servers, and hence many youtube ads don't appear.

Facebook's medium for an ad platform is weak though. It's not just the fault of online advertising companies. It's also the fault of facebook of not allowing prime real estate for ads.

They know that users will find it obnoxious because users don't go to facebook to be sold something. There's no intent to find like there is on Google, Yahoo, Bing and others. It's disruptive advertising (like television) and by default will always fall somewhat behind the web companies that have users that already have intent.

People just don't click on ads anymore. There's no reason to and people are smart enough to avoid ads that try and lure you in. They're like commercials but with the ability to push them into a corner and ignore them. Or if you're even slightly above average in computers, remove them altogether.

There's a digital advertising joke that I can't find to copy and paste here. I'll try to re-tell, but I'm not the greatest of writers...

The CEO of a retail company that spends 1million+ per month on advertising walks into the marketing department. He walks up to the manager in charge of television advertising and bluntly asks "What's our conversion rate?" - The manager replies "Well, we have the impression rate, the audience reach..." - "But you don't know the conversion rate." says the CEO.

The boss then asks the manager in charge of print advertising "What's our conversion rate?" - "Well, we have the subscriber base and the estimated reach and this cool QR code and a unique link for peopl..." "That's not the conversion rate" replies the boss.

The CEO then asks the web manager in charge of PPC advertising and asks "What's our conversion rate?!" and the web manager replies "It's about 10% currently..." and the CEO quips back "10%?!?!?!? That low?! You're fired!!!"

....

Point being - other forms of advertising may in theory perform better. But the data you get from digital advertising can not be matched. You can instantly find out whether a campaign is successful or not. Many businesses (including the one I work for) spends more than half of their marketing budget on digital advertising simply because it allows you to analyze what copy/images/campaigns/concepts work. And in my biased opinion - digital advertising performs better for many industries (pretty much anything in retail or lead-gen).

tl;dr - sure, few people click on ads, but the cost is low, the execution is a million times quicker than any other type of advertising, and at least you know exactly how many people saw your ad!

Brown's hit on Rozsival (GIF) by vacapsin hockey

[–]evildeadxsp -5 points-4 points ago

Out of curiosity, how is this knee on knee: http://i.imgur.com/1STn0.png

That still does not show what made contact first. It's clear the shoulder is jerking back for the contact with Roszival, but it's also clear that the knee of Brown has entered the crotch of Roszival - due to this still taken after connecting with the knee. Brown looks to be even extending his leg out in that image more so than in the live action.

Hell, this is even the definition of the rule of kneeing -

50.1 Kneeing - Kneeing is the act of a player leading with his knee and in some cases extending his leg outwards to make contact with his opponent.

In that still you provided, it's clear Brown is "extending his leg outwards"

[–]evildeadxsp -8 points-7 points ago

Agreed he couldn't stop. But If the play was onside (and there was no whistle) I still think this is a call. The whistle only made the penalty more obvious.

Respect to the MIT Technology Review. But this is a bokank piece.

Facebook is carrying a big portion of the digital display ad spend but not ALL digital spend (PPC search spend/Affiliate spend). If facebook sinks, it'll hurt the industry as a whole, but it won't take the whole "ad supported web" with it.

Brown's hit on Rozsival (GIF) by vacapsin hockey

[–]evildeadxsp -10 points-9 points ago

And for my opinion (which I know will be downvoted for being WRONG) is that Brown made knee contact first. That's all the angles I've seen. Shit - it doesn't matter that he led with his shoulder. It's a knee on knee hit.

A good portion of big penalties (elbows / hits to the head) are not by a player LEADING with an illegal elbow/blow to the head - it just happens unintentionally. These lead to suspensions. This is obviously not a suspendable offense. But it should have at least been a penalty. The fact that it came after a whistle should only make it more obvious that this is a call that should be made.

"Facebook is not only on course to go bust, but will take the rest of the ad-supported Web with it." - MIT Technology Review by heliotropin technology

[–]evildeadxsp 1 point2 points ago

This piece is poorly argued, and IMO jumping to conclusions too quickly. I do agree that facebook is a company ran by techies that needs to be ran by marketers to be successful. But isn't this the case for any tech company that first IPOs? They have to adapt to their shareholders desires/the markets desires instead of valuations set by a smaller sect of investors.

I think Facebook will continue to slide down to market realities. But it will not take down the ad-supported web with it. Hell, Yahoo! and Google are better predictors of the ad-supported web as a whole. I know the writer here delves into both, but not nearly enough.

To compare it to traditional media, which the author seems hell bent on doing - Facebook is like - one publishing house - like conde nast. Yahoo! tried being the stretched too thin publisher and on the side, the facilitator for ad technology (the ad awareness tracker/ad printer/ad designer for other publishers). Google focused mainly on the the ad technology and ONE product for publishing (google search).

Facebook won't survive until it starts selling it's data/technology to other publishers. Basically a reverse version of Facebook Beacon. Use the data gathered on your facebook profile, use it on other publishers sites to market to you. Google does this right now. With Chrome, with your search history, with the pages you've visited. People tend to freak when they hear of facebook doing this though.... so they've refrained....

What new features would you add to the next NHL game? by Pyre64in hockey

[–]evildeadxsp 0 points1 point ago

2k sports used to create online league websites. EA still hasn't replicated this as well as 2k had it 8 years ago (it started with NHL 2k4).

Basically, it'll be GM Mode online (which they announced) but all stats, schedules, standings for the 30 teams that are selected would be automatically populated on a website for you. On this site you'll also have forums to trash talk and to schedule when to play your next game with each opponent.

I missed those leagues. I used to manage a few every year. I would even send physical trophies to the champions. Even became good friends with quite a few people through the leagues I was apart of (hell, I would about 20+ of them are personal friends of mine on facebook. All due to online NHL2k leagues)

Any experience with your heat NOT being on your lease? by waithowdoipostin nyc

[–]evildeadxsp 0 points1 point ago

Find out if it's oil or gas heat. I paid for oil heat this past winter and we spent in total about $1200.

So It was about $300 per month for a 3 bedroom. Total insanity. Gas heat is apparently much cheaper. I'm looking for an apt now, and now I'm only looking at places where heat is included.

Good, free white/gray SEO communities other than /r/SEO? by NattyBrohin SEO

Just an fyi - Inbound.org was founded by the same founder as SEOmoz. So there's a lot of overlap in the community. With that said - Inbound is for more of a technical implementation crowd (for both SEO and PPC), while SEOmoz content is targeted more for a general online marketing audience.

UAW for automatic backlinks, should I buy it? any results or reviews from u guys? by magicomirallesin SEO

[–]evildeadxsp 0 points1 point ago

I did find success using this tool. Became a top 5 result after about 6 weeks working with this (one article per week - technically 3, since you have to spin the original twice). The keyword was considering Highly Competitive by SEOmoz.

Other methods were used to help the site rank better as well, but I think UAW was a contributing factor.
