That's one way of looking at it. Another would be that people using IE on windows might have less disposable income than those who were either running OSX (which was far less popular back then) or tech savvy enough to change browsers (again, less common then) which may indicate a higher level of education and therefore more disposable income.

I would imagine the dynamic pricing was changed regularly and tweaked until they found a sweet spot.

It's actually even more complicated than I made it sound. There are numerous holding companies, ownership groups and governmental involvement. Especially on the VW side with the local government in Wolfsburg.

As I understand it, VW have agreed to buy Porsche at some point in the future (2014??) but at the moment only have 49.9% where Porsche has 50.73% of VW. They were basically all in for a merger but it fell through, hence the slightly ambiguous position.

But that's me trying to decipher the VW press release, which isn't exactly written with human beings in mind.

I can't find the article I read but I did find this thread at Mac Rumors: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=218162

That links to other threads from 2004, which is probably about the time I first heard about it. It would have been somewhere like The Register where I read the article originally.

Yep. It was probably five years ago now. They were charging a premium for users of certain browsers (I think it was FireFox and Safari on OSX, with IE on Windows being cheapest).

Reminds me of the big fuss that kicked up a few years ago where Crucial would display different prices depending on what browser you were using. Pretty shady stuff.

Actually, Porsche owns Volkswagen Audi Group. Or at least has 50.73% of the voting rights, so a controlling stake.

And to extend this, you can write music as data (e.g. As compressed MP3s) which allows for far more music to be stored (say, 200 songs on a 650MB CD with reasonable compression). However, you can't play it in a standard CD player because it's expecting the music to be stored like a record. You'll need either a computer to read the files and convert the data to music or a CD player that works its MP3 files.

Non-Americans who have visited the US: What surprised you the most about the US, and what surprised you the least? by jumbletonin AskReddit

[–]essjay2009 1 point2 points ago

It's not just food servings. I went to a drug store to buy some paracetamol and the smallest pack I could buy was larger than the total amount you're allowed to buy in one go in the uk.

And on the subject of drugs, the adverts on tv for drugs were one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen. I'm all for an informed population on health issued but there's no way I'm going to tell my doctor what drugs I want him to prescribe me based on a tv advert that had 20 seconds of someone mountain biking and then 45 seconds of disclaimers. And there were so many of them. And for some serious conditions as well.

Somewhat meaningless, but this is the front page of the New York Times Sports Section today. I was surprised to see the playoff final there by deception42in soccer

When they first introduced the play offs the guy who suggested it said it would become the world's first million pound game. It's on it's way to becoming the first 100 million pound game.

It's been five years now. Was this estimate true? by lekotarin apple

Apple did the same thing. iOS was first running on an iPad like device, a tablet, but when Steve Jobs saw it he said "Let's try and put it on a phone".

[–]essjay2009 -5 points-4 points ago

I'd go further than that. I think Apple were the first to realise that very quickly people wouldn't consider making calls the primary function of their phones. There were mobile browsing devices around then (e.g. Nokia's) but they were too big to fit in your pocket, everything else was a phone first, everything else second (even the Blackberrys of the time).

I bought an N95 over an iPhone back in the day. I've never hated an inanimate object more in my life. Feature for feature it blew the iPhone out of the water, but the user experience on that thing was horrible. One of the main selling points over the iPhone was the fact the N95 had 3G, but I hardly ever used it because it was so painful. Th biggest hurdle isn't between the phone and the network, it's between the user and the phone.

Oh, and that's not to mention the numerous anti-user decisions Nokia made when they put out updates, like removing tracking from the Maps applications to try and get people to pay a monthly subscription to get a usable directions. I'll never, ever buy a Nokia phone again no matter how good it looks because I'd be fearful that they'd pull crap like that again and remove a feature I used every day with scant warning.

Why do TV programmes in the US get so comparativley low viewers to shows in the UK? by Mit3210in television

[–]essjay2009 1 point2 points ago

How many free to air channels do you have?

For reference, in the uk, upon buying a tv (and paying the tv licence which funds the bbc), you get access to something called freeview which has maybe 100 channels depending on locale. If you pay for satellite or cable then it's in the multiple hundreds.

Oddly, the advice is so vague in the top image the guy isn't that far off.

  • Eyes level? Check
  • Hands and wrist straight? Well, the one I can see is, check.
  • Neck bent slightly? Check.
  • Feet and lower back supported? Check
  • Shoulders down, arms relaxed by side? Close enough, one is.

I've just finished watching it all the way through (last episode was today). It was SO good. Even all the meta "Save the Bluths" stuff.

Let's hope the Netflix comeback next year is up to the same standard.
