A lot of the older first-gen rap seemed (to me anyway) to focus on either sociopolitical awareness or just goofy bragging about how good they looked and all the girls want them, and silly story-style lyrics. To me the shift of mainstream rap went from playing/fun/bragging to social awareness to sexual themes to gangs/violence to moneymoneymoney and now is back on nonstop sex.

I'm a tattoo artist and I'm working on a medusa piece for a client. any feedback would be helpfull thanks. by deromdotceromin pics

The artwork and detail is really nice, I like the colors. I might suggest a change of expression. The mythical Medusa (I am assuming that's who this is, and not a cute Anime updated version) was kind of a demonic murderess with snakes for hair, and who could turn you to stone with a look. This here looks more like a sad young woman who's unfortunate enough to have snakes permanently on her head and thusly has trouble making friends. I think it's pretty, but it doesn't scare me and I think Medusa should. Maybe a slight scowl, upraised brow, a little evil glint in the eye?

Ask Amy: Friend’s status updates are racially charged (Do you agree with Amy?) by aspeenatin blackgirls

[–]eroverton 7 points8 points ago

Well, there's this. I've known many (black) people refer to jobs that they hate but cannot leave due to financial or other concerns as "the plantation." And a lot of people have had managers/supervisors who were not "the boss" but felt it was their responsibility to stay on your back all day and "crack the whip". I think it's a fair comparison to an overseer, regardless of your color.

My fake owl really scares the shit out of birds and keeps them away by TheSeeker00in gardening

Is it possible to record owl noises and have it play every so often? That might be a better deterrent. Maybe...

I would have gone with "revolution." He didn't necessarily mention violence.

I also make my own products: for a moisturizer I fill my spray bottle with a mixture of water, rose water (for scent), and aloe vera juice. $3 for the rose water, $9 for the aloe, it's lasted over 6 months now because you only need a little of each to supplement the water (I use 1/3 aloe, 2/3 water. Then I splash a little of the rose water in afterwards).

For my moisture/styling creme, I have a mixture of shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, almond oil and this, which I added partly for scent and partly because it contains the other oils I missed (jojoba, castor, etc.).

All of the oils were costly at first, true, but with the addition of the shea butter, it stretches a good bit and you will be able to make quite a few batches out of them. Plus, since they are all oils, you don't need to use much at once, because you don't want it to get all heavy. My method: melt the shea butter for easy mixing, add in a little of each of the other oils, you will then have a puddle of oil. Let it cool so the shea butter firms again, but you want it creamy, not hard so continue adding the oils until your room temperature consistency is creamy rather than hard like plain shea butter.

For shampoo, I use Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap. For conditioner, I use Herbal Essences, usually - though I am interested in trying some of the natural conditioners I hear about - mayo, avocado, banana & honey... and when I want something with a little hold I use Organic Root Stimulator's Smooth-n-Hold Pudding. :D

If your hair is feeling stripped and dry, it may be you are shampooing too often? Try halving your shampoo usage and washing with only conditioner on some days. And I have become a huge fan of the acv rinse about once a month, too!

Animals that camouflage themselves - how do they know? by erovertonin askscience

If the pink fish were introduced to an unfamiliar environment where there are equally sized pieces of pink and white coral, and a threat were introduced, would the fish have evolved a natural tendency to always choose the pink coral to hide in? I mean, if it doesn't have the influence of 'familiar territory' to guide it?

I suppose visually, seeing the pink would trigger a 'safety' response, if it's used to hiding in pink coral. Perhaps a better test is to get a fish early and don't introduce it to pink coral until the experiment.

I'm just curious if there is any point where there is self-awareness of their own appearance that guides them in their decision making or if it is purely a response garnered by evolution and habit.

I think that this sounds like a fairly good test method. Easy enough to create and gain insight from; it makes me wonder if such a thing has already been done. Most likely yes, but if not I'd be interested in trying to set one up myself.
