Why don't you do it now, rather then when it goes off by itself and never comes back on?

We have 32G of memory in the blades and only 4 in the storage server. They literally do nothing.

To clarify a bit, iSCSI exported over SFP+ 10GbE from each storage server though a 10GbE switch to the file server chassis via a passthrough, so 10GbE to each blade. The file servers each present a few different storage pools depending on their role. The file server then exports the pools over NFS to our HPC cluster.

Sure, parts list:

  • SC847A-R1400LPB Supermicro storage chassis
  • LSI MegaRAID SAS 9211-8i (not my favorite)
  • Supermicro CBL 0281L
  • Supermicro X8DTE-F motherboard (cpus+memory)
  • Crap-tons of hard drives (WD/Seagate/Hitachi/whichever)
  • Other parts are needed, but that's the jist of it

They run stock-ish ubuntu server with iscsi exporting every drive to the file server blades in the middle where the file servers (also ubuntu server) are loaded with the zfs dkms kernel module.

What hardware/software products does your company use that if you had to do it all over again, you'd do it exactly the same way? by thrazin sysadmin

[–]erimar77 0 points1 point ago

I'd probably of started with ZFS rather than wrangle through limitations of EXT4 and XFS over the last few years.

We have a Braun 3 burner style like at the gas station, I'd never settle for less.

No way man, I don't want anyone to think we bought a "solution" ;)

We build our own storage, so what a great time to show off a bit of the administrative interface we've been working on to manage it.

Interesting thought, I hadn't considered availability of replacement hardware.

Great, it sounds like we already have a good handle on things then. The physical contracts are via our purchasing department, so I only need to handle per project.
