I don't know if it beats that, but I have a similar story.

I'm a FedEx driver who works out of a station in Costa Mesa, and I had to drive from the station to my route in Huntington Beach (near Bolsa Chica, to be more precise). My route starts at 3:30PM, and when I take the 405 during that time (traffic is kinda bad, but not horrible) it usually takes me 15-20 minutes to get to my area.

Sitting in my station, waiting for the time to leave for my route when I get a message saying the 405 is a parking lot. So, I decide to leave a few minutes earlier so I can take surface streets and hopefully get there around the same time. I head out on Talbert, take it to Magnolia and head North until I hit Warner. Now at the time, I had no idea what was causing the horrible conditions on the freeway. Had I known, I would have avoided that area entirely.

Anyway, I see the light is out, so I make a left onto Warner, only to find out that they have the street closed between Magnolia and Newland. So I pull down this residential street, bust out my phone to find an alternate route, and see the street i'm on empties out onto Heil. So I take it North, not realizing that that particular section of Heil is closed off as well, so I end up looping back around and exiting out the same street I turned North on earlier.

This whole process in the residential area takes about 15 minutes, until I get back out onto Warner. I end up taking it back to Magnolia, head South until I hit Talbert again, and the proceed to take that the rest of the way until I can finally maneuver around all the horrible traffic and make it to my route, 30 minutes later than I should have.

Needless to say, I was not happy, and had to rush my ass off to get my job done in time.
