TROPHY CASE

The Christian case for gay marriage by TopRamen713in OpenChristian

[–]eatmorebeans 4 points5 points ago

The marriage vs civil union thing still seems very "separate but equal" in my opinion.

Edit: Also, that whole passage is more about idolatry than it is about sexuality. I think it should apply to any relationship where people misuse one another, regardless of the sexes involved.

I also don't eat meat for the reasons you're alluding to, but you have to cut your friends some slack. When I first considered becoming vegetarian, I was hella scared. How would I get my nutrients? What does a veggie meal even LOOK like? How do I cook that weird shit like tofu and tempeh, and what the hell is seitan? I knew all the reasons, but it still took me a while to switch over because it's a really serious lifestyle change!

^ True rant, right here! And I'm on board with every bit of it! You know what really makes me mad? "Well, we shouldn't control what people outside the church do." Why would it be okay to discriminate against people INSIDE the church?!?!

You trans* people definitely have it harder than the rest of the queer folk, and I really feel sorry about that. A lot of times when I talk to people about the Bible and sexuality, I use a trans* example because the Bible really never says anything like "If thou were born with a weiner, thou must remain a man," or vice versa. When I ask what the people who feel gender or sexual dysphoria should do most people have no idea what to say. I feel like it really makes them think about how they feel about the issue in its entirety.

On your second point, I often feel frustrated about this too, but no matter where you live, there are probably people who are trying to live a more alternative lifestyle. Have you ever heard of/are you interested in the Transition movement?

TIL grapefruit didn't exist until 1750 and is a hybrid of the pummelo and orange. by imissyourmuskin todayilearned

[–]eatmorebeans -3 points-2 points ago*

The key to eating a grapefruit properly is to eat it like an orange. Peel off the outer thick skin, take apart the segments, and then peel the flesh off of the segments. The flesh is what is bitter, not the actually fruit part.

Why the downvotes? This is really how you're supposed to eat a grapefruit. I hated them until I started eating them this way.

Do you have an Buddhist writing you could recommend? I was also very interested in Buddhism, but I converted to evangelical Christianity right after I got interested, so I took a huge detour, and now I'm back again.

It is implying the same. It gets more specific depending on the translation.

[–]eatmorebeans 8 points9 points ago

Actually, some people believe it does: "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." Romans 1:26-27. I am a gay Christian, and I disagree with that exegesis, but still, it's a very common view.

Incoming Freshman Question: is the meal plan worth it? by Thereianin ufl

[–]eatmorebeans 2 points3 points ago

I agree with you. I was at the dining hall constantly during fall semester of my freshman year. It was a great place for me to socialize as well. During the second semester I dropped from unlimited to 180 meals, but I was perfectly happy with the meal plan. If you live in a dorm like Jennings, where the hell are you going to eat? It's really hard to live in the dorm and cook all of your meals, and other than that you really only have the option to eat at fast food restaurants, or pay for food off campus.

Ok, point taken. I just wasn't sure if you were against hate crimes in general or just LGBT hate crimes.

[–]eatmorebeans 7 points8 points ago

Do you think hate crimes should exist for race? Let's switch it up. Beat someone up because they are black is not the same as beating someone up because they root for the Flyers. Killing someone because they are hitting on your girlfriend is not the same as killing someone who is hitting on you just because they are black.

The problem is that LGBT people are a marginalized group of society that experience hate on a very regular basis. Also, their LGBTness is a defining part of who that person is. Declaring anti-LGBT violence a hate crime might make the general public see that LGBT hate is wrong, because right now most of the country doesn't see that.

To be honest, I moved here from the South just last year, and I have had absolutely no problems at all being a lesbian in Pittsburgh. Yes, my partner and I live in Shadyside, but we hold hands all over the city (South Side, Oakland, Garfield... pretty much everywhere), and I have never seen anyone give me a look, do a double take, or say anything rude at all. I even volunteered at a food pantry where I met a super blue collar lady who used to work in the coal mines who apparently has been living with her female partner for 25 years.

Edit: coal factory?
