Enjoy your holier-than-though privilege. I'll be over here hanging out with my literal degree and life-experience in directly-relevant subject matter.

Also, fuckin' lol at somebody from England (or wherever the fuck in the UK you are) arguing that it's really the minorities who are racist.

(Editor's Cut: It is indeed pointless for black people to call themselves black. That's just pointless labeling! We're all people! Black is just a mindset!)

Hey, we fought a war over this shit.

You grew up in poverty? Okay. There's still a distinct difference in how one's treated by society (and once again this is from an American point of view) based on one's skin color, regardless of whether it's intentional. Systemic racism is a very real thing, which makes sense considering that racial segregation was and always will have been an ingrained part of the American character.

I can't speak to how it is in the UK, but I can assure you that all things being equal, a poor black guy is going to have a rougher time of it than a poor white guy. I'm an American. I refer to myself as an American, unless there are situations where racial characteristics are relevant. If you aren't white, you're reminded of it over and over again in a variety of ways, both insignificant and not. That's just how it is, and you can't say that that isn't a real experience that I and many others have every single day.

e: Also, racism isn't simply defined as something that refers to race. "racism" as we use it refers to the use of racial differences for defamatory, hateful, or discriminatory purposes and you know it. It's not racist to acknowledge that somebody is black, or asian, or whatever.

e2: You don't get to decide what is and isn't insulting or appropriate for other people. If somebody wants to be called asian-american or black or even negro (which was on the last US census because there are still some elderly black folk who prefer that term) then so be it.

No no no, it's not about tribute or heritage. It's that being a minority is a distinctly different experience than being white, such that it's useful to have a vocabulary that acknowledges that. it's not a matter of right or wrong, it's just about acknowledging real differences that manifest even if everybody has the best of intentions.

Modifiers are to be used when appropriate. I.e. while it would be ideal if we could simply say "American" and leave it at that, there are situations where drawing the distinction is useful.

(Try not to take it so personally, dude. I'm not calling you a racist here or anything.)

(Also, black people who go to the US and get called African-Americans have a right to be mad about it, because they aren't Americans. Note that, in the context of American citizenship, African can sometimes be used as a synonym for black.)

e: These labels only apply when discussing race within the context of American citizenship, it's not like I consider all "westernized " Asians to be "Asian-American" or something.

This is incorrect. It's like saying "black people don't exist, we're all just people!" You're completely ignoring the fact that any given ethnicity doesn't have the luxury of ignoring their racial or ethnic heritage.

FYI and all that.

While I appreciate the attempt at meta-ironic racism, you've missed the mark a bit.

Good try, though.

It doesn't work like that. There's a distinct difference between trying something reasonable with regards to physiology (etc) and just trying any old thing because you're desperate.

Also, raw food diets are the stupidest thing unless there's some compounding factor. Cooking literally increases the nutritive content of food and dates back at least a quarter million years. (Some estimates go back as far as 2 million years.) Raw food diets are unnatural.
