The "forever alone" as a psychological diagnosis - The excessive use of video games and online porn is creating a generation of risk-adverse guys who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school and employment. by Loyoverin TrueReddit

[–]e40 29 points30 points ago

Yeah, it's like parents who whine that their kids do nothing but play videogames. When asked if they would allow their kids to go outside and play unsupervised they say 'hell no'. Well what choice are you giving them? Of course they're going to stay inside and play in a fantasy world where they have SOME control and independence.

THIS. I can't scream this loud enough. I have an 11 yr old that has never roamed the neighborhood by himself or his friends. No kids his age do. We live in a safe area, too. Why? Because all the parents, including my wife, would freak out seeing them out there.

Also, another thing: homework. Kids have more homework earlier than I did. I, personally, think this is collusion between the parents and teachers to keep the kids busy. I heard that a teacher in middle school that is known for giving less homework gets constantly hassled by parents to give more. I couldn't believe it!

I also agree with you. Screen protectors are a waste of time, money and sensitivity of the screen.

Our faith is fraying in the god of money by Bemuzedin TrueReddit

This comment was pretty good, IMO.

As for the opinion piece, I agree. Greed has pushed us to the edge. Will we topple over it or pull back? Will the people that have disproportionately benefited help? There's certainly been a few of them (Stephen King, to name the latest) that have spoken up.

I dislike a lot of what Democrats are doing, but I detest what the GOP stands for these days, which is the opposite of what Obama wants, and for the things that he's right on, that means they are the opposite of right.

unreinforced masonry

Exactly.

Look around So Cal (or all of CA) and notice how little masonry there is in use in buildings. What there is, by this time, has surely been reinforced in various ways.

Latest Fox News poll shows Obama with 7 point lead by ashumanin obama

I was speaking generally, not about this specific poll. That's why I used the word "polls" and not "poll" or "this poll."

Latest Fox News poll shows Obama with 7 point lead by ashumanin obama

[–]e40 1 point2 points ago

1) Polls this far out are meaning less. 2) Most polls are worthless due to the small sample size or badly phrased questions. 3) Some polls are done by partisan organizations and are just lies (by both parties), and this is done by using questions and multiple choice answers so bizarrely constructed that you can get any result you want.

The real story behind the rejected TED talk on inequality. by cptjmshookin politics

[–]e40 43 points44 points ago

The mere mention of a party doesn't make it partisan. That is, the author can say

This idea is an article of faith for republicans and seldom challenged by democrats and has shaped much of today's economic landscape.

and not be partisan if it is true.

I personally think it's a cop out by the TED folks.

EDIT: btw, I think this is the tragedy that we find ourselves in, that calling out facts gets labeled as speech that is undesirable. Sad, very sad.

How FBI Entrapment Is Inventing 'Terrorists' - and Letting Bad Guys Off the Hook by --frymaster--in TrueReddit

[–]e40 1 point2 points ago

Here's how I look at it:

You befriend someone. You talk for months about a common foe. You constantly talk about how this person is horrible and deserves to be killed. You feed the fears and anger and hatred of your new friend. At the end of this process, you buy a gun, drive the new friend to the place where this foe is, you hand the gun to your new friend and say "go ahead, pull the trigger."

How is that different from the trigger person doing all of this by themselves? VERY different. Without the constant encouragement and support, the person may never act on any hate they harbor.

That's why this is entrapment, because the FBI is a willing participant in fostering the desire to commit the crime.

IAMA Guardian reporter in NYC who wrote about an innocent man executed by Texas. AMA by edpilkingtonin IAmA

Is this really the first identifiable case of a person being wrongly executed? There is no case where DNA was used to posthumously exonerate someone?

The wrong Carlos: how Texas sent an innocent man to his death by tarpdetarpin TrueReddit

I read somewhere in the last few months of another case. I didn't save a link to it and I don't remember the details (it wasn't like the ones in this article, though), but it also claimed to have an example of someone that had been wrongly executed. Is it really true this case discussed in the linked article is the first??

Are 3TB drives trustworthy yet? Details ahoy. by LetsTrySciencein hardware

[–]e40 0 points1 point ago

I still think 2TB drives are unreliable. On my home machines I have a small number of 2TB drives and a bunch of 1TB and smaller. In the last year, I've had to RAM 2 of the 2TB drives and one 1 TB (POS Samsung).

2TB just doesn't feel as reliable to me as the 1TB and smaller drives.

First, it's not a "few lines". There's quite a bit of content here.

Second, this person serially does things that hurts people. We're not talking small inconvenience. We're talking major inconvenience. To a lot of people. He knows this. He doesn't care.

Third, one has to wonder why you are an apologist for him.

I wonder if he knows he's a sociopath, because that's the only way you'd be able to do this "job" and sleep at night.

EDIT:

For those that disagree:

Three of the following seven characteristics qualify you as a possible sociopath (according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV):

  • failure to conform to social norms... check
  • deceitfulness, manipulativeness... check
  • impulsivity, failure to plan ahead... unclear
  • irritability, aggressiveness... no signs
  • reckless disregard for the safety of self or others... unclear
  • consistent irresponsibility... check
  • lack of remorse after having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another person... CHECK

So, minimum of 4. Possibly 6.

Chomsky: “Jobs aren’t coming back because American no longer makes anything...” by ResidentGingerin TrueReddit

[–]e40 -4 points-3 points ago

You do realize that manufacturing hasn't been shipped out in many senses. US produces more goods today than it ever has, certainly in value.

Give us examples, please. Almost everything in my home and driveway came from somewhere else, with very few exceptions. My wife, an immigrant, is absolutely nuts about buying American, and she rarely gets her way. Clothes, kitchen items, etc.

The only thing that I can say we buy that is consistently American is the food we eat. Much of it comes from a local farmer's market. We're lucky to have them. However, there are still lots of fruits and vegetables that come from outside the country (bananas, grapes, etc), carried by the big chain stores.

It's been 40 years since electronics has been made in the US. Yes, GE is a US company, but much of their stuff is made in Mexico. And, it's complete crap. I bought a GE under-the-counter radio/CD player and it died in a few months, with minimal use. Replaced it with a Phillips version, and that's worked for years.

Other sectors of American goods: lumber and cars. On cars, I'm just starting to see, for the first time in many decades, cars made in the US that I would consider buying--from Ford.

The service sector, while expanding, is a horrible place to end up. It's low paying, often doesn't include medical insurance, and many companies, like Wal-Mart force people to work part time so they don't qualify for insurance. So, a lot of the people that work at Wal-Mart end up working a second job elsewhere. Yeah, Wal-Mart pays better than minimum wage, but not a lot more, and it's still not enough to support a family.

I think the numbers you've quoted are inflated with things like defense spending, and possible other things. In real terms, we don't make stuff as much as we used to.

VZ GNex owners: Who does NOT have radio/signal issues? by mapinin GalaxyNexus

[–]e40 0 points1 point ago

Occasionally I get the gray bars, which means google services are unavailable.

I leave LTE off, since most of the time I'm connected to wifi and the areas I'm in have bad LTE coverage, but it does take a long time to switch between 3d and 4g (perhaps due to the bad signal).

Also, I sometimes get weird connectivity issues which require a reboot. During these times I can't even make a phone call. Reboot clears it, though. This happens about once a month.

What happened to CLtL3? by keveamin lisp

[–]e40 5 points6 points ago

This is not going to be popular, but here goes...

I think it is dangerous to have users, and not implementors, designing a language. Users come up with things that are difficult to impossible to implement. I went to the ANS reboot meeting in 1999 (?) with Erik Naggum and we were blown away by the horrible ideas that were proposed by the majority users there (vendors there: 2 from Franz and 1 from Lispworks). The entire 2 day meeting was completely useless.

I think the users were well meaning, but it's one thing to have an idea and another to implement it, and implement it efficiently.

The last thing Common Lisp needs is a bunch of users getting together and deciding the future direction. I guarantee it will be filled with stuff that is broken and hard to impossible to implement.

What made the original ANS committee so effective was that it was filled with the people implementing Common Lisp. There were strong leaders (Gabriel and Steele) who would quickly push aside dumb ideas.

I do not see a strong personality that is also an implementor.
