[effort] If you could commit genocide against 3 billion people, who would it be? by feline_beatin ShitRedditSays

Hooolyyyy fuuuuck. ಠ_ಠ

I technically probably fall under #3 as my last job ended due to mental illness. Ahahahah. And it's not like I don't worry that I'm a drain to my partner when I'm feeling low. Ahahaha. Hilarious.

Thank you.

That clicked in my head, finally. It does I feel like open up an interesting space for how transgender as an identity is defined. I know it's always been a sort of umbrella term to a certain point, but that concept of sex I feel like opens it up even more. (Not something I think is bad. Rather neutral feeling on it.) I'd expound further, but I feel like I've irritated and offended several people, and feel bad, so I'll take that now and shoosh.

Thanks everyone who talked with me though. I know its trying to explain things so personal to someone who doesn't get it.

Example that medieval armor did not restrict movement the way many think it did by dragon_toesin ArmsandArmor

[–]dragon_toes[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh I would never make the argument that armor is comfortable. I wear it often enough to know better than that (though, to be fair, my helmet is in fact tons heavier than a medieval helmet would have been.) But a lot of people have the image of the knight that can barely walk with armor on. Obviously not true.

I was taught that long before I saw the gingerbread person thing; it was as far as I know a commonly accepted thing, in both cis and trans* communities. I didn't see the gingerbread thing and then magically think I knew all there was to know about GSMs. I consider myself genderqueer. I've read many many things on transgender issues but am constantly trying to learn more to be a good ally. I don't much appreciate being held up as a "look at this beacon of stupid everyone!" It's frustrating and demeaning. I apologize if I'm being gravely offensive, I'm really trying not to be.

I have read that effortpost. Most of the links describe sex as a combination of biological traits, (repro organs, secondary sex traits, hormones, etc.), gender as separate. None of those links seem to answer what I'm trying to figure out: which is that why sex, defined as a collection of bodily traits in spectrum form, with the stipulation that it's possible to change sex, is an inaccurate word/concept.

And if that is true, which I can certainly believe because I can see right away the problematic nature of that definition, is the correct answer then self identified genders and physical traits mean nothing as a group beyond "people who have x" x being whatever trait you want to inset, be it genitals, hair, chromosomes, voice traits, whatever. (as this post from the effortpost goes into a little bit) In shorter words: sex doesn't exist.

That's what I'm trying to understand, and am not getting clearly from any of the 101 posts, since all of them use sex as a word that is separate from gender.

This one, presumably?

I thought the spectrum nature of it sort of encompassed that there was more than just biologically "male" and "female."

Is the ideal then that traditional biological markers of what is traditionally defined as a "Sex" are ignored? That there is no biological sex, but only gender? IE: there are males with penises just as there are females with penises, the junk in the pants doesn't actually define anything, it's just random traits people are born with? Is this what is being thought of as ideal? Would this erase transgender then, because it is not possible to be "in the wrong body" if sex doesn't exist? Or would transgender people be those who don't feel their penis or vagina is the right type for their person?

I feel like that's probably not what you're trying to say, and it's likely I'm misunderstanding something. I'm sorry if any of the above language is offensive, as I'm struggling to construct my thoughts of gender vs. sex in terms of what is traditionally defined as "biological sex" is not taken into account.

If you have any resources you'd rather point me to, or if you're willing to continue to explain it to me like I'm five, I'd appreciate the learning opportunity.

Didn't say it was really great. Said it was a start.

Though I did miss how it marginalized most transsexual people. Would you explain it to me? Maybe I'm missing something crucial.

Is booster gold even considered mainstream? The only reason I know about him is because my geeky girlfriend fanfics all over him and uuuh blue beetle I think his name is? .... sure.

That said, if it is that one, she'll explode all over in joy.

Is there a more general subreddit for Medieval and related periods subreddit? by Dat_Karmavorein sca

[–]dragon_toes 1 point2 points ago

I was going to type in /r/MedievalHistory, which is unfortunately fairly inactive, and got /r/medievalworldproblems. I giggled at some of the posts.

There's also r/Norse, but it's hit or miss on what actually shows up there.

Thanks for your willingness to teach. (:

There are, but I also, on a personal level, can understand identifying as a masculine female. Somewhere in between (. I need to read up on it (I have Female Masculinity sitting on my shelf RIGHT NOW waiting to be read) but I am uncertain about the ability to present as a butch female in the early 1900s, so I can see why someone would present as male instead. I'm attempting to walk the line between acknowledging that transgender individuals have always existed while also acknowledging that females, who know they are undoubtedly female, while acting entirely masculine, have also always existed. It's tricky tricky tricky.

It's tricky today even, so to figure it out for a century ago is even trickier.

No problem. I am not transgender, but do consider myself gender queer, so I know it's frustrating as fuck to have anyone tell you, or even imply, there's two genders and THAT'S IT, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to educate me.

Yeah, I can see both sides of the argument on that one. So to try and pick one that seems to be less risky, I like assigned female/male at birth. Especially since I had to look up CAMAB, where as assigned-female made obvious sense right away.

It's one of those things that is tricky since historical scenarios change things a little bit. It's possible ze was a trans man, but it's also possible ze was a butch lesbian and realized the only way for hir to make that life work was to cross-dress and ID as a man. Especially since inversion was the popular theory of GSMs at that time.

That said, in the context of my post, I feel like it doesn't matter so much, because no matter where this person falls among the gender and sexual minorities, we should remember ze and be proud that ze had the bravery to live their life as well as they could despite the dangers.

Remember those who came before, and be proud of their bravery. by dragon_toesin actuallesbians

[–]dragon_toes[S] 5 points6 points ago

No, I wouldn't. Thank you for pointing out my prejudice (I mean that sincerely.) I know part of it is because it is difficult to grapple with terms of identities of sexuality and gender historically due to the unnamed nature of the identities. Especially since in the late 19th and early 20th century homosexuality was called inversion and all GSM were lumped into one big mess of the same thing. So it is harder to definitively say what someone in the time frame Falleni/Crawford would have truly wanted. I did look up hir more thoroughly now though on wikipedia and much like the original image I posted, am amazed and feel pain that their actions caused them so much strife. Falleni/Crawford committed suicide several years after being released from jail.

Also, I had never heard of those terms, and was struggling to come up with a way to say born with female genitalia at birth. Assigned female at birth seems to be a good one, since it looks like CAM/FAB has some problems.

I suppose that's true, my apologies for poor wording. Thank you for setting me right. valeriekeefe above has introduced me to new terms that will be hopefully more inclusive.

I don't know how s/he identifies, so I didn't want to just say female. Problem? Though I will admit I should have used gender neutral pronouns in the first part of my response to be consistent.
