Dockers Alpha Fit vs. Levi's 511s by doppleganger2621in malefashionadvice

[–]doppleganger2621[S] 0 points1 point ago

My Alphas aren't really that close to my 511s. It's not as tight in the thighs or in the leg. I actually prefer the fit of the Alphas. I had heard them being compared to the 511s and since I like my 511s wanted to try them out.

I actually prefer the fit of the Alphas and think that there is certainly a better comparison out there than the 511s. I realize that we're talking about two different types of pants here, but the Alphas aren't really that much like the 511s.

Thanks, fixed that. Also, I believe it's the Dockers D1 that are compared to 514s.

As an Australian, what the fuck did North Carolina do?! by Sik_1in AskReddit

[–]doppleganger2621 34 points35 points ago

Under NC's state's constitution, the only legally recognized union is marriage between one man and one woman. This means gay marriage, yes, is banned, but so are civil unions, or domestic partnerships between gay or straight.

So if you're in man a domestic partnership with a woman and she's in the hospital dying, guess what? You don't have visitation rights anymore!

They chose to amend their constitution because it requires a whole constitution-amending process if they should ever want to change it in the future.

I know this sounds crass, but as older people start, well, dying off, marriage equality is going to be more probable.

Over 60% of Americans born after 1980 support marriage equality. It's around 31% if you were born before 1945.

Gallup polling from earlier this week.

Thankfully, unlike 2004, a majority of Americans don't like when you act batshit crazy against gay marriage.

A majority of Americans support marriage equality, including 57% of independents.

EDIT: Though I suppose at exactly 50%, it's more like a plurality, since 48% oppose, but you get the picture.

I was like, "How scary could this be?" and then I actually yelped while watching it at work.

Would you rather know how you die, or when you die? by Wyrdashin AskReddit

[–]doppleganger2621 2 points3 points ago

I would seriously obsess about it too.

I mean, if I found out I was going to die in a car wreck...I'd pretty much have an anxiety attack every time I got in a car.

I'm trying to become more educated and aware of what's happening in the US and the world, which newspapers/magazines/websites/tvshows should keep up with? by gilinkin AskReddit

For blogs, read Andrew Sullivan's Daily Dish. First off, I love Andrew Sullivan, but his blog provides both a blend of personal commentary and news (especially from the rest of the blogosphere). Secondly, it's not all politics/news all the time, there's also psychology, sociology, history, etc. The Dish is probably my most-read website.

Are there any non-religious arguments against banning same-sex marriage? by PepSupChOthin AskReddit

I imagine the number of divorce attorney suicides would likely spike. Or even better, think about the death of the man in a 1 man, 5 woman marriage...splitting up all that property and assets.

Indeed. Children are remarkably able to understand what love is and looks like, and if they haven't been taught that only a man and woman can be in love, they are likely to understand that men can love other men and women can love women.

Slippery slope is plagued by transitivity of implication.

If things were givens, slippery slope can be valid, but it's not a given that same-sex marriage leads to polygamy, leads to legalized marrying of animals. In no country where same-sex marriage is legal has polygamy subsequently been legalized, so right there, the assumption that gay marriage------->polygamy is invalid.

Same-sex marriage does not lead to polygamy. Can polygamists argue that because same-sex marriage is legal, then their relationships should also be legalized? They certainly can do so, but simply by saying A leads to B, therefore A shouldn't be accepted is not a valid argument.
