The "forever alone" as a psychological diagnosis - The excessive use of video games and online porn is creating a generation of risk-adverse guys who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school and employment. by Loyoverin TrueReddit

[–]donaldrobertsoniii 31 points32 points ago

It's also interesting to note that while he views the porn as replacing normal physical interaction, it's the opposite with video games: he views the digital violence as a primer for actual violence and not as a replacement.

I should be able to get a house when I'm, say, 30? by hereforthekittehsin fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Everyone in this thread should go check out /r/frugal. The people there are all about lowering debt, saving for retirement (even early retirement), and also about getting good deals. I'm also 29 and still not quite ready to own, but I went from having $250 in the bank with over $2k in credit card debt in February of 2011 to having over $15k and no credit card debt. I would post that over there but the people who generally post their "I'm proud of my new frugality" kind of put my accomplishment to shame.

Even if you can only take away one or two good tips, it is well worth checking out and could get you on the road to owning a home, if that is something you want to do.

I like bacon, but when it comes to breakfast meats, a good sausage patty is hard to beat. Also, corned beef hash.

I think the government is pretending like your dad has savings. 14k a year from 60k (while possible) is a huge crunch. But if your parents had set aside $100 from each paycheck starting when you were born, they'd only have to shell out about 3k from their current income to cover your education. That's not even taking into account interest or any increase in value, just the money sitting in a crappy savings account would have done it.

Unfortunately, most baby boomers haven't been saving for anything, so it is kind of unfair for the government to punish our generation by assuming that our parents saved up for our education when determining financial aid.

Facebook shares fall 13% on second day, below IPO price by pepitkoin business

[–]donaldrobertsoniii 0 points1 point ago

This NYtimes article said: "Critics have said the company does not generate nearly enough advertising revenue to justify being priced at 108 times earnings over the last 12 months."

I'm not sure I fully understand, but I think this is what that is saying:

The 16 Billion IPO gave facebook a valuation of over 100 Billion, which was 108 times over the actual earnings which were around a billion. If the revenues were higher than 4 Billion, then it might make sense to value the company that high even though the earnings were such a small fraction of the price of the company.

Is comparing revenue to the size of the IPO, as opposed to the valuation of the company that the IPO represents, the standard way of determining whether an IPO is over-priced?

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

I have actually heard that numerous times in the US as well. People often use it as an example of the importance of one vote. I knew it wasn't true but it is interesting hearing its misconstrued origin.

Every TV crime drama ever. [FIXED] by gjacques5239in AdviceAnimals

My law review did a symposium on the topic a few years back. Some of the presenters gave very interesting anecdotes about the effect. Things like jurors not convicting in a white collar crime case because they were never shown a finger print or other such evidence on the documents. But in terms of actual evidence that jurors these days are expecting heightened amounts of evidence, or that convictions are more rare since CSI started, there wasn't much really. My take away from it is that the effect CSI has exists but is somewhat exaggerated by prosecutors.

I remember this kid from elementary school, I think his name was Duke. He wore a jean jacket every day and he was from Texas apparently, but I don't recall him having an accent. I do recall him picking up popcorn that other kids had dropped on the ground and eating it during recess. I told him he shouldn't and he asked me why and I said because that popcorn was dirty and he said okay. From then on every conversation I had with him was just him thanking me for telling him to not eat the popcorn.

Actually there were two kids who I remember wearing jean jackets all the time, but I can't remember which one was named Duke or whether that was the same person as the one from Texas or whether the last two bits were actually true for either of them. But one of them did eat popcorn off the ground, and he definitely wasn't as good looking as the one who didn't.

"Generation Next" is apparently another term for Gen Y or Millennial generation. While that generation's start date varies depending on who you ask, the most common year is 1982, meaning that there are members of that generation who are turning 30 this year.

Because I write things by hand so rarely and sparingly that there can't possibly be an advantage to doing it differently than what I know? I'm not choosing print I just literally can't write cursive.

Just to make clear, this is how I was taught handwriting and I think many others in the states probably had a similar experience:

Kindergarten through second grade: print
3rd grade: cursive - "You'll use this all the time!"
4th grade through law school: Cursive is not allowed because it is hard to read

But it doesn't matter too much to me, because like I said, I generally don't write things by hand any ways.

Dehydration I think is always the biggest thing, but diet can play a role in it as well for some people. Most people don't need to change their diet in order to avoid stones. If your family doesn't have a history of stones, then you probably don't have to worry. Unless you know what type of stones you are likely to form, you can't really change your diet any ways, because the changes you should make differ depending on what type of stone. Some people are supposed to cut back on protein (though I guess that's generally a good tip as well), whereas others (like me) are supposed to be careful with certain healthy foods like spinach, soy, and almonds. So, long story short, just keep well hydrated and you should be fine.

Yeah, I think the problem is that you're comparing cursive to printing, but you should really be comparing it to typing. I spend my whole work day typing on a computer, not writing with a pen. Why learn two ways to do something I barely ever do in the first place?

I didn't realize cursive was a still a thing in other countries. I work with several people who grew up outside the US but none of them use cursive, but they've all been here in the US for a while. What are you guys writing over there all the time that makes knowing cursive worthwhile? The only things I ever seem to write with pen and paper are lists or signing receipts and things like that.
