Edible "stop signs" in food intended to help control overeating-- portion control is a notorious problem, especially in the US, so maybe a visual cue iwll help? by zinsonin science

[–]doduo 0 points1 point ago

Wansink's book on Mindless Eating pretty much changed the way I view food: study after study after study show that we stop eating NOT when we know we're full, but based on a score of other cues. For instance, if we have a big pile of bones from chicken wings in front of us that is not cleared away, we will eat fewer. If we get a new glass every time we have another glass of wine, we will drink less. If snacks are served in one big bowl as opposed to many small bowls, we will take less food. And in a study with grad student volunteers at a test-restaurant, where a pump hidden beneath the table was hooked up to bowls of tomato soup and kept soup levels at a constant, people ate twice as much but felt like they ate less.

There are easy ways you can control overeating in your own home setting, but in restaurants, it becomes more complicated. They use giant plates to make it seem like you are eating less, they clear all plates and cups away, etc. Because in the end, food companies WANT you to eat more.

You can create your own visual stop signs at home (for instance, by putting chips into their own individual baggies rather than eating from the original bag) but getting companies to comply with a policy that would hack at their bottom line would be... difficult.

What is the backstory behind the Swans that hang out near the BU Bridge in Cambridge? by kgmoomein boston

[–]doduo 4 points5 points ago

TIL I'm not the only one fixated on this area.

Not always geese: it's sometimes ducks, too, and sometimes they clash. Last summer I watched for an hour as they stood their ground, gave and took territory and barked at one another.

I have no idea what they're doing there but it's adorable and every time I jog over the bridge I stop for at LEAST 20 minutes to watch them hang around and be geese.

Hey Reddit, it's time for some heartwarming tales. What is the best thing a friend has ever done to cheer you up? by Avorisiin AskReddit

my two best friends in high school knew I was having a rough couple of months and showed up on my front porch one random afternoon, no notice, with a bouquet of flowers and then took me out for ice cream.

it was just very sweet.

Women of reddit: What is the best way for a physically unattractive man to ask you out? by yellowpridein AskReddit

[–]doduo 0 points1 point ago

wait, physically unattractive and horribly ugly are the same thing? um, okay.

assuming you're well-put-together and slim and just face-ugly, you can be physically fit, make me laugh, be respectful, be intelligent without being overbearing, be a good listener and above all else SMELL GOOD.

I am a black guy with a large penis that's attracted to fat white women. How many redditors are breathing stereotypes? by Dupenin AskReddit

[–]doduo 1 point2 points ago

I'm a 21 year-old female journalist at a large metropolitan university. I love coffee, Moleskines, and microbrew beer. I wear big thick glasses, cardigans, and red lipstick but my hair always looks like shit. I ride a bike in Keds and knee-length floral skirts, love Bored to Death and Americana folk, and interned at NPR.

Today, I sang a duet through my kitchen window with a stranger in the adjacent building singing through his bathroom window. Have you ever formed an unexpected bond with a totally random person? by mixigsin AskReddit

[–]doduo 44 points45 points ago

I was browsing a consignment shop downtown with a friend one day. There were about 10 other people in the store. All of us were women. None of us were really talking.

Then, I Will Survive came on.

It started subtley at first. A tow tap here. A hip shimmy there. But by the second round of the chorus, we were all singing and dancing while shopping.

We were women of all ages and ethnicities, some American, some not. But all of us were together, singing and dancing to I Will Survive in a multigenerational, multiracial, international display of sistahood.

And suddenly I knew what it felt like to be in a yogurt commercial.

Do you hate women? Do you think we're all the same? Why? by Humancomputer87in ForeverAlone

[–]doduo 1 point2 points ago

"That's because of the inherent reality that women don't have most of those qualities. I've never met a female who made me genuinely laugh. Not once. There's no such thing as a woman with a "sense of humor." There's also no such thing as a genuinely intelligent woman. "Intelligent" for a woman is just one we can actually have a conversation with and not feel like we're talking to an animal. I've never met a woman who actually impressed me with her intelligence to where I went, "wow, she's extremely perceptive and sharp." That never happens."

in case you were curious, this is why you are single.

What joke regarding your career have you heard too many times? by hotelninjain AskReddit

from a year in retail.

"NO TAG ON IT???? I GUESS IT MUST BE FREE!!!"

"no thanks, I won't use a bag. GOTTA SAVE A PLASTIC TREE!!!!!!"

"wow, you folded that shirt so quickly. YOUR CLOSET AT HOME MUST BE SO CLEAN!!!!!!"

via wealth of experience, I have realized that these are the only 3 things that white midwestern men between the ages of 35 and 70 are capable of saying when shopping.
