How to convince your customer from PHP to Ruby? by progfuin ruby

It's mainly corporates that are still on it nowadays, either because they have systems that will only run on IE6 and can't be bothered to upgrade or the IT dept is too lazy to upgrade to the latest systems. The British Government recently refused to upgrade despite a lot of pressure.
Basically it's still hear for a while, although personally I'd charge extra for IE6 support that normally stops customers. :)
why the hate for dreamweaver? by marion_in web_design
I think it has it's place, particularly for those learning. Where I think it becomes a problem is when people become reliant on the design mode without understanding what it's doing and the bad code it's writing.
If your using it as a text editor in my humble opinion there are cheaper and better options out there, but if you like using it I guess why not.

Hmm I think flash has a lot of issue, not least the fact CS4 runs like a dog.
But one of the things that flash has always had a problem with is people use at a reason to get round the limitations of the web, many of which are there for a reason, not least UX and IA standards to make them usable.
Don't get me wrong I do like flash (I know there is a lot of people on here that don't), but like any powerful tool it's open to abuse and I think that what flash does. What things like this make it easy for designers to bypass fundamental rules in web, which I don't know if it's a good thing.
That said I know a lot designer that would be happy about this as AS3 scare the hell out of them.

Where have all the links gone? by djforthin web_design
[–]djforth[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Thank you I couldn't have put it better myself! Exactly my point! :D
[–]djforth[S] 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago*
There is enough links if people vote them up, I do company links email to educate everyone on the web. I can always find good links when I hunt around and I used to use reddit a lot for it. Their there if people want them. I'm try to post some of the good ones up as I go, but they often don't get voted up, although maybe what interests me doesn't folk on here.

lol you'd really get on with Nick Griffin...
[–]djforth[S] 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
lol nice I always like people who feel the best way to go is to insult people.
But I will point out again, it is not about self.reddit per say, it is about the amount of self.reddits on the web_design reddit
[–]djforth[S] 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Chill out dude, to be honest if this is what people want then I'll stop using this reddit. My point is the amount of self reddit.
Yeah there is an option for text submission and sometimes there is a point to it, my point is there is virtually no links going up on the web_design, least not that stay on the front page. Besides not here description it say "Reddit is a source for what's new and popular on the web.", not tell me how to do something
Erm ok I'm a bit confused, I not arguing whether there relevent or not, simply that reddit is about sharing links and not about asking how do I do this css or something.
Yeah but it is about the web design in particular, so I thought it was relevant
lol as I said in my post I get the irony of doing it, but my comment is more on the amount there is. Of the 25 reddits on the front page of web design anywhere from 19-23 of them are self reddits. My point is that people are just using like a help forum, of which there are loads out there. The odd self.reddit is cool, but when there is no link on a sub reddit I think there is something very wrong.
Yeah I do agree with you, which is the reason why I've been trying to post a few when I see something interest. But they never seem to get up there even when I think there really good, so many comments get posted on the self reddits they never seem to see the light of day.
[–]djforth[S] 13 points14 points15 points 2 years ago
It's a shame, maybe we should just vote down all self posts! :P
Well I guess, but the whole point of reddit I thought was post links that you think people are interested in and then they can up/down vote and comment on. If people are interested in 24 examples of the colour blue then cool, because at least it a link. Of course I don't so I'd down vote but that's the point
[–]djforth[S] 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
Exactly, there is plenty of help forums out there reddit is all about the links!
Look at this site, look at the source code, then cry. by meinhyperspeedin web_design
[–]djforth 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I take your point, to a point, but the trouble is all to often clients and designer see bad websites and ask why you can't do something similar and then you have to spend all the time going through why it is a really bad idea. I also think it show the majority of peoples lack of understanding on the web and the complexities behind it, do you same think its the same in the print or TV industries?

Oh for god sake.. why does everyone have such a bug bare about flash... yes it can be hideous when used badly and there is issues in certain circumstances. But I know of plenty of site that use plenty of other web technologies badly, there are plenty of web technology that have issues... Flash has it's place just as much as any of the technology and whether web purists like it or not it not going anywhere.. get over it for god sake.

I used it on a project and although it's pretty good you can get into some issues with it. Particularly when using the same height function with either images or form elements in it. Still a neat solution.
