I'd like to be able to talk more with my boyfriend about paganism, any advice? by AmberTheSpazin pagan

[–]deviationblue 0 points1 point ago

As someone in a similar state of belief, I'll say this.

We don't have all the answers. God is the face we paint on the big box (Pandora's box?) containing all the things we do not yet understand. Remember how lightning used to be angry gods, before it was static electricity discharge from the earth? And whichever gods you choose are merely the faces you choose to paint on the box. In essence, All Gods Are One God - and God is merely the personification of that which you do not or cannot understand.

It is very easy to pair this abstract concept with that one voice in the back of your head (aka conscience, back seat driver, voice of God) and develop a relationship with that metaphysical, meta-conscious part of yourself.

Or, like me, I choose to focus on the mundane parts of Witchcraft, those being the manipulation of energies and the quest for self-improvement (akin to the Buddhist quest for nirvana) - meditation is your greatest friend, a friend I don't visit nearly often enough.

It also helps if you have a penchant for ritual.

Sorry, it's late and I'm rambling. Hope that makes sense.

For the record, I only wrote the essays authored by Obsidian. Daven wrote the essay on the 13 Principles.

Thank you. Can't necessarily speak for Daven as that's not me. :)

Looking forward to knowing which of the other essays speak to you as well.

After all, they are related to Skrillex.

I am still Obsidian, and while it would make sense to make a sock puppet for the less offensive material, I was nowhere near that clever.

ExWitch Ministries...now that's a whole other bag of worms i don't really want to get into right now. :D

After some reflection, I think the only things I would flip are west/east for fire/water. North/air and South/earth would stay where they are, for the reasons i explained in the essay.

I'll have to revisit the cardinal directions, as now I live in San Diego, where the ocean is in the west and the fires usually happen in the north.

Goodnight sir. (BTW, is that a ham call sign?)

Socrates13 was not a Soc puppet (sorry, couldn't resist); he was a Christian friend from the forum of ExWitch Ministries, with whom I have a history.

That is a fair request, and I shall.

Still haven't decided if I'm going to go through with it though.

OP delivers.

http://davensjournal.com/obsidian/images/metal.jpg - taken sometime in 2002. The entire site was backed up on Daven's Journal late in 2005 when the domain name expired. The picture was added in the final update sometime in '07.

You have my permission to nitpick line by line; after all, I can dish it out, and I'd be a complete hypocrite - and also a complete pansy - if I couldn't take it. :)

Edit: I do not have access to Daven's Journal or I would in fact do so. The best I can do is the pictures above, and my word in good faith. I credit Daven almost singlehandedly with taking me under wing and making sure I didn't do anything incredibly stupid; I should get back in touch with him her and make an update to my section of the site.

Edit 2: If this can count for proof: http://mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?265652-Elephant-juice&p=4689683#post4689683

Humans, when their beliefs are attacked, get defensive by default. Knowing this, a wise speaker or author will avoid making offensive constructions when possible not because he or she is attempting to bowlderize his own ideas, but because he thinks the ideas are themselves important enough to attempt to convey in a manner that is most likely to find an audience.

You're absolutely right, and the idea was a reverse psychology of sorts - to use the reader's own defensive reactions against him. It worked about half the time.

I liken it to the reason most people don't like metal or dubstep, and that's because most people's ears aren't keen on atonal...noise (i.e. distortion, machine sounds, etc.) I was trying to write really good shock metal here, and for its particular genre - I was trying to be the Marilyn Manson of neopagan authors - it was good.

But now I know how to make music that's pleasing to the ear, and I'm interested in the opinion of my peers to see just how close to the mark I was with the heart of the matter, despite the methods I chose to use at the time.

Thank you for your perspective. I value your criticism.

No, you nailed it right on the head.

It's really hard, though, to make sense of things when you're 21. Now that I'm older, I see that I was right about a lot of things, but wrong in how I was going about them. Were I to resurrect this site, I would take a markedly more approachable...um...approach. :)

This is exactly the kind of review I was looking for. Thank you.

I did intend to offend, because at 21 I was of the opinion that you really had to be grabbed by the shoulders and have the fluff literally shaken out of you (because that's what happened to me, and I knew it was for the better). I'll say that it worked to a point - there were as many bridges burnt by my antagonistic approach as there were crossed; my experience was 50/50, but I didn't care because I was bitter and angry because, well, I was a 21-year-old boy. Now that I'm pushing thirty and am much more...balanced? I have the inclination to resurrect this website, sort the wheat from the chaff, edit out a good portion of the vitriol, and continue to add substance.

I'm particularly interested in knowing, if you would be so kind, which essays did serve to save face.

And once again, thank you.

and my only wish is that he still updated it.

I'm asking because I have the pull of breathing life back into this, most likely in the form of a Wordpress blog or something similar. I'd probably rewrite a considerable amount of it and take out a good deal of the venom.

I'm interested to know which essays in particular spoke to you.
