American Redditors: if you own one, why did you buy a gun? by aka317in AskReddit

[–]deliciouspizza 1 point2 points ago

A lot of people say that the 2nd amendment exists so citizens can protect themselves from criminals. Though it is one of the nice benefits of the 2nd amendment (I have a concealed carry permit myself) the writers of the Constitution intended solely to give the private citizen a right to defend themselves from the GOVERNMENT, not criminals. I find this is a common misconception.

This doesn't mean people shouldn't have the right to conceal carry or have home defense weapons, this is what most people do with the 2nd amendment after all: Defend themselves, their homes or shoot recreationally. But the INTENT of the 2nd amendment is to maintain a citizenry that is armed so to serve as a final line of defense against governmental tyranny. Once a citizenry is unarmed and the only people with guns are the military or the cops, the people are essentially no longer citizens but subjects. This isn't really up for discussion, it's the truth. Even if every citizen in a gun free society took to the streets and rioted, they wouldn't stand a chance against a modern military, if it came to that. Look at the Arab spring, I doubt Iran would still be controlled by the tyrant Ahmadinejad if they had the 2nd amendment and I doubt the uprisings in Egypt and Libya and elsewhere would have been so bloody and prolonged if the citizenry had the weapons and requisite skill that comes with practicing your 2nd amendment rights.

A lot of people have an idea of gun ownership as a hobby for backwoods racist rednecks. I couldn't disagree more. Carrying a concealed firearm is more civilized. It takes violence out of the equation for me and for anyone close to me. If you don't carry a firearm, anything could happen to you when you walk out the door. And if you're lucky you'll get a call out to the cops after which you can sit on your hands for 5-10 minutes as you wait for them.

And if you think about it, guns are no more dangerous than driving a car or using power tools. People have a lot of misconceptions about guns from TV and movies and politicians who use guns as a hot button issue to appeal to peoples knee jerk reaction after a sociopath goes on a shooting spree. Most gun homicides in America are criminals killing other criminals and then a minuscule handful of sociopaths. Should we let the actions of criminals (who, by definition, don't care what laws are passed) or a paltry few madmen be our reasoning behind stripping millions of sane, law abiding citizens from their right to defend themselves and their families?

Brofist. My parents live in Dayton, whenever I go to visit I always swing by Vandalia Range and Armory. Awesome selection, awesome range (especially the indoor 100 yard rifle range with computer targets) and best of all, everyone who works there is a courteous, helpful, decent human being. Nate is the man, he teaches local cops how to shoot, gave me a free "controlled pair" lesson.

The example I cited is just the first example, as I stated. There have been many more. I wasn't trying to show off, as you're implying, I was in the market for a .45 and was curious. I don't go to gun stores to show off my knowledge of firearms.

If a gun store owner is so stressed out about his business he should probably practice good business, like not treating his customers like retards. It's bad business sense, it's rude and it contributes to a damaging stereotype about gun culture.

And I also disagree with your implication that it's good for gun shop employees to be condescending assholes to new gun owners because, why, it will keep away those not serious enough about their firearm hobby? What about the guy who just wants a gun to defend his family, or the girl who lives in a bad neighborhood but is on the fence about buying a gun because she knows so little about it. I suppose it's better that these people are treated like morons, so as to dissuade them unless they are really serious. This is nonsense, it's elitism and snobbery disguised as logic. I would bet that snobs like the ones at Target World do as much damage to the gun community as gun control activists by running off potential new gun owners.

I've gone on slow days and have had amiable experiences. I can see how you might be confused. Try going back a few times, you'll see.

I have too many instances to describe. Just go there, point to a random gun, check it out and make a positive observation "I like the trigger/magazine release/grip angle". They will shit on you no matter what, they may even call over their buddies to join in. They get off on it.

Also:

-The range is unsupervised. I have some serious horror stories about the people there.

-The range itself is shitty, half the stations are practically broken and it gets hot as hell in the summer.

-Every single accessory they sell, holsters, knives, scopes, gun maintenance and ammo is overpriced and of shitty quality.

-Every single gun they sell is wildly overpriced.

I've been put on hold for almost an hour, I've waited in line for almost an hour (and it wasn't packed). I called ahead to see if they had a gun, they said they did and I show up and they were wrong, didn't actually have it. They finally get one in but it has a huge scratch on the slide and they're still asking their ridiculous price. This is the tip of the ice berg, the tip. Not to mention I had to almost call my lawyer on them one time when they tried to screw me over on a return, I'm not getting into it.

Being passionate about and "geeking out" over firearms doesn't justify rude, condescending and combative behavior. I think it's kind of ridiculous to even suggest that being passionate about something and being a decent human being are mutually exclusive. That's just thinly veiled elitism.

When I first got into guns, which was more than a decade ago, I frequented a gun store where the owner was respectful, helpful and, in general, a really nice guy. He would chide me if I said something blatantly dumb but I never felt looked down on.

Fast forward ten years of firearm experience, a huge arsenal of varied weapons and hundreds of thousands of rounds later and I'm at Target World for the first time. I ask the guy if the gun under the glass is a .45. He scoffs at me "No, it's a .40"...Okay. I ask to see it, I mention that I prefer some other brand. He pounces. He goes red in the face while delivering a ten minute long, condescending rant about why my brand is shit and his is superior.

This is just one instance. I endure a minimum of one scoff every time I walk into that place and I actually know what the fuck I'm talking about. This is not normal or acceptable behavior.

I had the same thing happen four years ago in Arizona. Worse part was, I was climbing a mountain, made it to the top and hung out for a few hours just listening to music when the sun started to set. Took me an hour to get up, figured an hour down, plenty of time. Ten minutes in I slip and fall right onto a teddy bear cactus and get pods stuck all over my right leg, foot, hip and arm. I tried ripping them out using my shirt as a protective glove but it didn't work and I actually got some more stuck my hand in the process. So I gingerly started climbing down. I had to restrict my movement otherwise my skin would rip. Didn't make it down until it was pitch black, I was covered in blood and cactus pods, and my Dad was freaking out "Where the hell have you been, I can't- HOLY SHIT!" He took me back to the hotel which wasn't far and the staff told me they could take me to the hospital but they'd do the same thing there, just rip them out. So they got out the pliers and ripped em out one by one. You could hear my skin rip, it was gnarly. The whole staff came by to watch me squirm. But I'm a manly man and didn't shed a tear. I was still finding needle bits in my leg 6 months later. Funny story though...

tl;dr I fell on a teddy bear cactus on top of a mountain by myself and the hotel staff had to rip the pods off me with pliers, it sucked.

Anyone else doing this right now? by lAbsolutelin AdviceAnimals

I literally actually am doing this. Thanks to this long break and my general laziness I've been waking up at 3-4 every day. I had some hope because I woke up at 1 yesterday and set my alarm for 11 today but...I woke up at 2. So now I'm popping Aderall and pushing through the night. League of Legends marathon will be in order, to keep me wired, maybe some BF3.

This will get buried but I'm getting a little sick of Reddit's sensationalist liberal bias. I'm liberal but you guys take it too far. It's great that you guys understand that America has problems but I see sweeping generalizations and oversimplifications of very complex, systemic problems.

-This is not actually true. Look at Russia, China, the entire Third World? We still have freedom of the press, keeps us relatively honest, believe it or not (keyword: relatively). -Companies that hire hundreds of millions of Americans, so this is also not entirely accurate. -It probably won't, actually, and if it does the supreme court will probably have something to say about it. -This is shameful but it really only happens to people who are actually dangerous and a handful of unlucky ones. -Even more shameful, and pointless, but the same is still true. -So? -Yes, I agree, this is bullshit. -This is not true at all. -On the surface, but Rick Perry is one of the most successful governors in America, Ron Paul has some great libertarian ideas and the actually good ones like Christie from Jersey aren't running because they know Obama is a shoe in (and he's not stupid). -America is full of stupid people, doesn't mean we're doomed. -Again, the good ones are staying away from this election because Obama is a shoe-in. -I don't know, McCain v. Obama seemed pretty legitimate? What do you mean by joke? It usually comes down to Americans deciding between two very intelligent and powerful people with opposing ideologies, isn't that what a good election is supposed to be? -Yes, but only baby boomers and idiots watch the TV news for their news. -Read above. -Yes, poor people are fucked in America because we a are a giant Capitalist empire and we're not perfect but it doesn't mean the sky is falling. -It is? I hadn't noticed, I'm currently surrounded by bridges, roads, hospitals, trains, public transport and a police force that have shown no signs of "collapse". -OH MY GOD WHY? TOP 3??? THE HORROR, THE HUMANITY!!! -Haha, not our economy bro, THE economy, the global economy will collapse a second time. And that is largely our fault but it's only because of us that the markets were ever that good at all.

One day in NYC I was walking around Grenwich Village with my sister. Walking towards us on the sidewalk is this guy in what looks like a John Lennon costume, orange shades, bowl hat, pea coat, even looked like him and he was with a chick who was equally hipstered out. As he was passing I whispered to my sister "John Lennon wannabe". The guy heard me and looked back giving me a funny look. My sister was shocked "You idiot" she said "that was SEAN LENNON, HIS SON".

Woops.
