Is there a term in psychology for this behavior pattern? by drewjetin askscience

[–]damfin0 4 points5 points ago

"Ego depletion" is an interesting and compelling theory that is at the heart of the theoretical explanation of these results. The gist of it is that an individual only has so much willpower, and that it can be used up. Note that some research indicates that this is not strictly/universally true.

This may not provide a very good answer to OP's question, but for interesting reading on responses to insults, one of the better-known starting points in experimental psychology is this article by Cohen et al. focusing on the so-called "Culture of Honor" dominating the Southern U.S. See this interesting follow-up, as well. If you're really fascinated, seek out Cohen and Nisbett's book dedicated to this topic.

The Milgram experiment and the Stanford Prison experiment (and the Holocaust) suggest that regular people ...

FTFY. These results of these experiments, while compelling and illustrative, are not as completely unambiguous as is commonly proclaimed:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17440210

"Volunteers for the prison study scored significantly higher on measures of the abuse-related dispositions of aggressiveness, authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and social dominance and lower on empathy and altruism, two qualities inversely related to aggressive abuse. Although implications for the SPE remain a matter of conjecture, an interpretation in terms of person-situation interactionism rather than a strict situationist account is indicated by these findings."

tl;dr: People who signed up for the prison experiment had clues as to what they were signing up for, and said clues probably attracted certain types of personalities disproportionately. Some people are bigger assholes than others.

Do you get aftershave facial breakouts? Try white vinegar as an aftershave solution. Dilute it, 1 part water and 1 part vinegar and apply generously to face after shaving. Stings for a bit, then wash it off with water. No more shaving acne. by Gracoin Frugal

You can. Most people will argue the soap/brush gets better results (less drying) and is more fun/satisfying, and possibly less expensive, but the cans'll do just fine if you want 'em to.

Statistically speaking, saying "statistics be damned" on reddit is likely to draw at least a little flak.

How come when when you wipe to hard after going to the bathroom that there's blood that you never get an infection from fecal matter getting into your bloodstream? by Nantookin askscience

[–]damfin0 6 points7 points ago

The doctor in question appears to feel similarly, as this recommendation was not made for patients complaining of diarrhea but not on or being prescribed antibiotics.

I have, on more than one occasion, heard a doctor tell a patient that there exists research indicating that taking probiotics with/after antibiotics is the only thing likely to help the diarrhea that comes as a side effect of the antibiotics. I was not and am not in a position to follow up about said research, so I'll ask about it here. Is this part of what makes the long answer inconclusive? Or is this doctor wrong/hoping for the placebo effect?

For those already in this position and thus without the option of taking precautions, it is important to note that if the Pauvich protocol is not well-tolerated, if this a serious concern the more radical Springer protocol may be an appropriate method of resolution.

You're absolutely right. Birds of a slightly different feather.

I won't lie, I like Les Stroud much, much better for his information, his high credibility, and, perhaps paradoxically, his much more laid back showmanship. (Also for the harmonica.)

TIL about Ray Mears, and will seek out his show.

Given a little more qualification, his argument might hold up; Les Stroud appears to have a more proven record of truly solo survival experience -- while truly ill-equipped. He also plays a pretty mean harmonica.

(But if victory in combat is also required, then yeah, maybe the young guy with military training might be a better man for the job.)

I've actually met several people who brush their teeth in the shower. I don't get it, but I'm sure there are some redditors out there who also do this who might explain...

edit: after your replies, i'm almost considering trying this. unfortunately, i use a non-waterproof electric toothbrush.

Witch hazel vs Alum by bleuzizou2in wicked_edge

[–]damfin0 1 point2 points ago*

haha, it's an easy mistake to make.

edit: i'm too lazy to figure out the chemistry of potassium alum and whether it's different from the aluminum salts in antiperspirants or not, and the relevant medical research, but i think i might be the idiot here -- because potassium alum is the common name for a compound containing aluminum.

It's difficult to argue with results.

Witch hazel vs Alum by bleuzizou2in wicked_edge

[–]damfin0 4 points5 points ago

hmm. alum blocks are potassium alum. usually i've heard of people being concerned about aluminum in antiperspirants (not alum).

in fact, potassium alum and related salts are sometimes used in/as "crystal" or other "natural" mineral deodorants. which one(s) did you mean?

(as to OP's question: I use both, usually alum followed by witch hazel. IMHO you don't technically need either, but at least one is a good idea, as they seem to help with acne and general irritation, and I suspect they would also help prevent infections.)

Very interesting. I didn't know that about combustion temperatures and CBD, but it makes sense.

Glad to hear you've found some successful treatments.
