The worst 8th grade math teacher in NYC by tu_quoquein education

[–]dRoark 2 points3 points ago

As an English teacher, this article makes me mad. Not because of the content, but because of the use of tricking the reader into continuing to read rather than using the inverted triangle journalism format. Ad revenue, you are killing good journalism and making it harder for people to learn what is actually going on in the world around them.

Any ideas on how to kill a week in economics with seniors? by Deofol7in Teachers

[–]dRoark 0 points1 point ago

This is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. It's a performance task where they literally create their own city. Now, this whole project is huge (and expensive) but doing something like this would be really awesome. It makes me wish I was an econ teacher instead of just English. There is no way to justify fitting this into my class (so instead we have a 3 week long unit where we do a formal debate talking about the morality of...robot autonomy. Hello Bicentennial Man)

I started my masters in instructional technology today. I was really excited until my prof had a video showing screen shots of her using the course website. She was using internet explorer. I'm not so excited anymore. by dRoarkin Teachers

I cant even imagine what that means. Now mind you the freeze point on our school computers where I teach is inconsistant, so some computers wont let you download another browser without an admin password (not to self: acquire admin password. Why did I not think of that before?!) but the first thing I do when I sit down at any computer is download chrome.

Are you just not able to download anything at all?

That makes me feel a little better. I dont ultimately want to be a consultant, I want to be a classroom teacher and researcher, but knowing what is out there is helpful. Did you just get into it because you knew what you were doing?

New vegetarian, needing suggestions by pukestainin vegetarian

When I first switched, I thought it was expensive until I realized everything is relative. If you are eating only Burger King veggie burgers and Cheese Pizza than yes, things can get expensive. Also, if you don't plan your meals and buy fresh produce that you aren't using up then you are wasting a lot of money too. Also, at first things can be a little more expensive when you start stocking up but once you have a decent stock on hand you will basically be able to buy $25 worth of veggies each week, spent $15 or $20 restocking essentials, and you will really see the value.

Hobo dinners from r/cooking -- a good meat alternative for the oven? by savy99in vegetarian

[–]dRoark 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, this stuff is ridiculously expensive. It is essentially seasoned TVP. Buy bulk TVP from your grocer (Whole Foods has it in bulk, Giant Eagle carries it in a package which is a little more expensive but not anywhere near as expensive as the morning star stuff, just about any full grocery store will have it in the organic/health foods section) and look up a TVP seasoning recipe, like TVP taco meat or TVP ground beef.

Absolutely positively be best cure for constipation is water, like, more water than you ever thought was possible to drink in your life. It is way better for your system than laxatives.

Drink a big glass, wait half an hour, and then drink another. Repeat until you can use the bathroom.

That's what the great depression taught our grandparents, that meat is a luxury that you eat when you can afford it. Therefore, most people eat meat with every meal.

And, I will second the people who say they bring their own food. Honestly, I think it is a little ignorant...I mean lacking in forethought...when apparently your family is always like this. From now on, plan ahead. If you have made a conscious choice to take control of your food then take control of your food. Even if you are a college kid who lives in the dorms and doesn't need to grocery shop you can still find a ride to the grocery store to buy chick peas, peanut butter, etc to feed yourself for a weekend.

Public or Private? by 7Pedazosin Teachers

I have worked in both, and though private schools tend to have better behaved students, more supportive administration, etc, it is just like any other field. It varies.

This just ruined my life. It also ruined my dinner. I've only been a vegetarian for about 3 months, but it's a lasting change I would like to keep.

And, while eating chick pea salad, I read this. Needless to say, I'm done eating for a few hours. I have been eating Nutella, and now I won't be any more. I also did Google this and found 7 Common Hidden Animal-Derived Ingredients to Avoid.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I know.

I had the same concern you did. So I signed up for a free calorie counter app (myfitnespal) that keeps track of all the different things in your meals. I quickely learned that even without meat I was getting more than enough of what I needed.

What to do with dried red lentils? by PaperFlower8in vegetarian

[–]dRoark 0 points1 point ago

http://www.acouplecooks.com/2011/07/lentil-tacos/

This is a recipe for lentil taco filling. It says to use brown lentils, but I always use red.

It has about the consistency of ferried beans but is way better for you. You can make tacos, put it on a salad, or they are even delicious just by themselves.

Without cheese or tortillas this is vegan too.

I just saw this on TED. I'm convinced, I'll be a vegetarian - part time. What do full-time vegetarians think of this? by twist3dl0gicin vegetarian

[–]dRoark 0 points1 point ago

Good for you. That's where I started, and honestly I just got to the point where I took a bite of chicken one day and knew that I was done forever. I ate fish for a few more weeks, and started reading Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer and don't eat fish anymore either.

One of my professors used to say "You can't throw a bad habit down the stairs: you must walk it down one step at a time." This is a great first step that will let you find your own meaning in your eating habits and will help you ease into what works for you. That way you don't get tired of not being able to eat "anything" like so many veggies say when they are with no vegetarians and just give up all together.

Former male porn actor went to college, got a masters degree, traveled the world and wanted to be a middle school teacher. He was fired after the school administrators found out he used to be in porn. Nancy Grace handles him like he is a pedophile. What do you guys think? by [deleted]in education

[–]dRoark 0 points1 point ago

See, thats why photos me me with alcohol or in skimpy clothes or in other questionable situations dont exist. And thats why I dont drink or go out in the city I teach in.

Being a teacher is being a role model. Yes, I am adult and I do participate in adult activities, but those activities are intentionally shielded from my professional life. This is an implied part of being an educator.

[–]dRoark 0 points1 point ago

Correct. No devils advocate. Regardless of how legal or not it is this would be entirely counterproductive to him leading a classroom. He can have credibility in any other profession but because of the adult nature of what his students can find about him he will never be taken seriously.

Honestly, I have no idea where he went to school but they didn't do a very good job. As an undergrad it was made abundantly clear to me that things like this were in my past, or I got arrested for a substance violation or assault that I wouldn't be able to receive my teaching license or would later have it taken away. These things destroy credibility and you can not fight an ocean of lost credibility with an "I've changed". This is about credibility and being taken seriously, not about morality.

He could always teach in an online format where the students wouldn't ever need to know who he was or his name. I'm not saying he shouldn't follow his dreams but he should have known this was coming.

On an unrelated note, the interviewer sucks. Nothing gives her the right to talk to someone like that.

I volunteered to teach basic spanish to elementary school kids at an inner-city school and have been left with no resources or guidance, can you help me out? by AtomicOrangein Teachers

[–]dRoark 0 points1 point ago

Though I am not inside your head, so I can't actually diagnose your specific confusing, I know that one of the common problems for tutors without a teaching background is figuring out what order to put things in. A great way to help with this is to simply go to the library and get any Elementary Spanish textbook. You don't have to use the book at all but it will help give you great outline for what words you should teach together in what order.

From there I would say the best thing for elementary kids is games and songs and activities. Stay away from worksheets and use freestyle art (draw a picture of anything you want and then lets talk about the colors you used in Spanish), songs (I know there is an ABC song in Spanish, and you can just Google tons of stuff), and games like Memory (match word and picture) or make your own version of a counting game (Sorry, Uno, etc) and count all in Spanish.

Language is about functionality, so try and do the same fun things you would do with kids that age in real life and use it as an opportunity to use Spanish.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions about any of that.

If you're being serious then I would love to. But I don't understand what you want: stuff about what debate is, stuff about the benefits of competitive debate, stuff about rhetoric and logic?

And rhetoric and logic are too intertwined to seperated. Yes, they are different, but they share a common thread: they do not have implied ethics. That is the teacher's job to add ethics into the students worldview and then the students job to decide for themselves where their moral compass points. But it is through logic and rhetoric as well as self-exploraion that we all must participate in pure argumentation with ourselves to convince ourselves what our own truth is.
