How do the Software Center / Repositories / PPA's work?

In a very simple way, think that its year 3001 and your kitchen appliances are so smart that you tell them 'I want to eat cheese pizza'. Now your kitchen knows that cheese pizza needs tomato sauce, pizza bread and cheese, and some chilli flakes to spice it up as option. It will find out that walmart sells all these things, and your kitchen comes with default walmart settings. It will order all these things from nearby walmart. Walmart will deliver the package, your kitchen will accept it via special small door where it will check if the package is authentic or not. Once it detects that all the ingradiants are from walmart it will open them and start making the pizza based on recipe provided in the package. And in 15 mins you'll have your pizza ready.

Now here replace cheese pizza with the software you want to install. Kitchen is your computer and its interface is Software Center, and it knows all the recipes and places where to order basic stuffs. Walmart is the package provider, so its a Ubuntu server with all required software packages in 'deb' format. And as the package comes with the recipe, the 'deb' packages comes with instructions on how to install softwares. And when package was received, kitchen checked for authenticity, same way your computer checks for 'deb' package authenticity.

Your kitchen came with pre installed walmart repo information and automatically downloads new product information and updates. The same way your computer gets update from ubuntu srevers.

Now one day you visited Californiia Pizza Kitchen and loved its pizza. They give a link for you to tell your kitchen how to make pizza using California Pizza Kitchen ingredients. Now when you tell your kitchen to make cheese pizza it will get the ingredients from California Pizza Kitchen instead of walmart.

In today's world, the CPK becomes a PPA where new version of same software are built by individuals or other corporations and when you install a new ppa you tell your computer to get latest software package from that location instead of default ubuntu servers. The package format is always standard 'deb' package so your computer will always know how to install it.

I just checked you response. Well I live near west coast, but I am glad to give some input. Many of my issues with new alt-tab is that it breaks existing things. I understand the need of new features to compete with other OS but breaking existing ones should be the lowest on your priority list. I like the new 'alt-`' switch but it break my muscle memory of using 'alt-tab' which is wrong. There is a reason people implement similar UI in new project because it makes easy to get things done. For example, in GMail when they added keyboard support for navigation, they used old 'j', 'k' keys which helps me getting things done without learning anything new. I am in no position to give you any lecture about this, but its just that I prefer when things goes smoothly without any extra effort. I appreciate your time to read this.

:) I have never used an OSX machine, but I think unity developers are blindly copying stuff from OSX and Windows. They are supposed to improve/fix whats broken in those systems!!

I dont want to switch to other distro so I'll remember to use that.

But the issues is that why they group windows from different workspaces?? I keep multiple windows of GVim open in different workspace and treat each workspace as group of windows for a specific project. This new behavior break my organized workspaces and I really hate it.

1) and 2) From User interface design prespective, what Alt-Tab has been used is to switch between windows not applications. The reason why separate window of same application works because within that window people use 'Tabs' or 'Splits' to manage multiple things (like in one GVim I keep more than 2 file of same project, and another window for separate project). If Unity designers keep doing this to standard behavior people are going to run away from Ubuntu!! Personally I like Ubuntu because of simplicity and would love to keep using it.

3) My complaint is that I use multiple workspaces to keep things organized and dont want them to be mixed up. So when I get all windows in my Alt-Tab, it breaks the organized workspaces!! Specially if I have multiple GVim windows placed in multiple workspaces then why they group them?? Its not a smart thing, its a dumb thing.

4) Ok. I agree that for newbies show-desktop is useful, but there has to be a switch to disable that.

5) I have used CCSM and options that I am talking about is enabling/disabling things I just mentioned above like 'grouping', allowing windows from all workspaces etc.

The whole reincarnation thing seems to be mistaken by soul. Replace the 'soul' with 'energy' of each individual being. Energy can't be created or destroyed so it just transforms into something else and total amount of energy is limited within universe. So now the reincarnation argument takes a new turn. Now following are few questions:

How can you distinguish each individual's energy
When an energy is transformed into new biological substance, how the old energy effects to new body.

Its great reading device. I am not talking about just ebooks or reddit, its great for finding things quickly while lying in your bed. As long as your ratio of reading to writing is more than 2:1 then tablet is the best device to use even if you have your laptop with you.

How hard is to implement a stack of window titles on top of the icon and when there is some activity that title will show urgent status.

Also when user hover over the icon, it can open the stacked titles so user can view the title update of specific window and select it if needed.

First of all thank you and whole ubuntu design team to fix issues of old desktop UI's.

I really liked the idea of opening up more space on title bar on right side by moving buttons to left, but why I haven't seen any concrete ideas/implementations using that space?
- I like the Unity idea, but I am not sold on using side bar launcher that just shows bunch of icons without any real info like title of window, update on the title (if someone ping me on chat in gmail or some commands completes in gnome-terminal), what are your plans in unity to replace this?
- Are there any alternatives to use launcher?

I don't understand how can you use Union to detect if the return value is valid or not. Union uses same memory for both types of data and it makes easy to do casting. Issue here is if you use union to pass Int and Error and the return value is 0x1 how do you identify in a compiled language that 0x1 is Error but not Int? Please understand unions before you write about it.

Implementation can be done in a lot of different ways and its not the question here. The issue here is that who should do it?

In the past when 'make' needed to find a list of the dependencies of the main source file, the implemented -M flag, now is the time to implement something that helps the editors to create a better environment for the coders.

For code-completion or syntax-check you are going to run something all the time, then why not the guy who knows the best can do the job for you?

Why not built within the compiler it self?? All the compilers should support such a feature to simplify the coding. Because code-completion and syntax-check is not a job of editor because it cant know all the things need to give correct answer to the user. Its a job of compiler.
