TROPHY CASE

Meanwhile, in Canada by radiofreebcin canada

[–]cryptoz 5 points6 points ago

Well, it's a little more than that. Look at it this way:

  1. Students start protesting.

  2. Government tries to make them stop with laws that make it illegal.

  3. Now even more people will protest, people that didn't even care before.

If the Quebec government actually wanted fewer protests, then...oops. Their actions directly resulted in the direct opposite. So while it's not the Streisand effect directly, it's like the IRL version.

They're running reports about SpaceX, elections, and all other pieces of news across the world. Potentially, a few hundred thousand people will march today in Montreal and they're reporting on that too. How is that embarrassing? "We care about things!" say the Canadians. "hahaha, how embarrassing!" says the world?

No, I don't think so.

Yes, Quebec has the cheapest tuition in the country. I wonder why that is...

[–]cryptoz 14 points15 points ago

Do we actually have to prove how many votes were offed by the calls?

No, but that's the most likely way things would happen. Any Conservative MP found guilty of electoral fraud will be thrown out of office and a by-election will be held. This will happen even if the robocalls did not affect the riding in question.

Alternatively, if the MP in a given riding is not guilty of anything (and perhaps had no part in the matter), but the robocalls are found to have likely affected the outcome of the election, the MP will be thrown out of office and a by-election will be held.

Meanwhile outside of McGill the quality of Québec's education is among the lowest in Canada and has no standing in world wide rankings.

Hah! I'll show you Concordia's JMSB and UdeM as counterexamples. Quebec has some fine institutions.

[–]cryptoz 1 point2 points ago

As for your first point, I agree and have edited my post as such; the sentence was meant to say that they are not at the expense of students in other provinces.

Why do these students in particular compared to all the other students at all the other institutions across Canada DESERVE to pay less?

They don't! All students in Canada deserve to pay less. If it just happens that the ones in Quebec are the only ones who care to do anything about it, then that's the way it is. I would never argue that other students are less deserving of a tuition decrease. If they want one, they should ask for one. Education is a provincial matter, and Quebec students seem to care more than others.

[–]cryptoz 1 point2 points ago

Do you think provincial policy should be written based on who gets insulted the most? That's ludicrous. The vast majority of the students protesting will have graduated long before the fees take full affect. Many will graduate before the increase even starts. They are not protesting merely for themselves nor is this at the expense of anyone else (out of province; some protests have indeed been at other's expense).

I don't see why you think it's unreasonable to try to make your life better (as well as future student's lives) when other people have a harder time. That's how progress is made; by demanding better.

Do you think we shouldn't protest electoral fraud, since we have enough food to eat, and that it's an insult to protest given there are countries without enough food? That whole line of thinking is totally illogical.

Explain that to people with no kids

I am a person with no kids.

I do not consider higher education a right, or deserved by everyone

Ah. I do. That's where we differ.

Your second paragraph makes absolutely no sense to me, but you did say it was directed at other people so maybe that's why. I'll respond anyway.

For what it's worth, I spent a huge amount of my undergrad in Starbucks with a laptop and textbooks, studying and coding. I don't see how that's relevant to who 'should' protest. Additionally, I owned an iPhone. That phone demonstrated, in very real terms, a dramatic shift in my industry that has led to significant advances and interest in my career. For example, I am now a mobile application developer with thousands of users and some revenue. Again, I do not see any relevance to the ownership of modern technology and who 'should' be protesting.

Regardless of all that: I think that everyone should have a right to higher education and I'm more than willing to pay for it with my tax dollars.

[–]cryptoz 0 points1 point ago

What point are you trying to make? First, nobody has ever raised my taxes (I haven't been paying for all that long). Second, I'm generally very pleased with how my tax dollars are spent.

I'd say it's working quite well. Sure, there are problems like corruption and such, but that's not really relevant to my point originally.

Astonishing. Even more incredible is this isn't really new as they've been open about this concept for a long time. "We don't govern on the basis of statistics" -> "We know the facts. We choose to ignore them and we don't want them to exist. So, they won't exist."

Abhorrent.

Not yet, but your excitement is an awesome motivator! Both the artist and I had an unexpectedly busy weekend and so the code isn't quite stable on all devices and not all the monsters/doodles are ready yet.

I am currently targeting the end of this week (maybe Thursday) for beta release. This is a little optimistic, though, we have lots of work to do.

Thanks so much for your interest and I will notify you as soon as we're ready!

May 2012 - /r/Android Developers Sale! by deodrusin Android

[–]cryptoz 6 points7 points ago*

Application Name Sale Price Original Price Sale Period
pressureNET Free Free Always
T minus $0.99 $1.80 May 11 - May 21

pressureNET is available for Android 3.0+ devices and is the first smartphone-powered barometer network. We receive well above 15,000 measurements per day and are planning on building new forms of short-term weather prediction as we grow our user base.

T minus is a beautiful countdown app and widget, designed to let you count down to custom events. We've made it a goal to ensure the app is beautiful with excellent fonts, Action Bar for everyone, and amazing graphics. We're going to release version 2.0 with a series of Themes in the next few weeks.

I haven't yet started weather prediction algorithms using the pressureNET data as I don't yet have enough users. However, climate controlled rooms will not be a problem as they do not significantly vary from outside pressure. A problem will arise in user's mobile nature, since a change in 8 meters of altitude (very common for someone walking around) results in a change of 1mbar of pressure.

I would typically detect a change in weather conditions by looking for changes of 3-5mbar over a couple of hours, so using a single user's readings are not going to be useful.

Hence, the network! When predicting the weather for a region I will evaluate a series of readings and discard the obvious outliers. This will give a slightly better perspective, and if I have a lot of users, a really detailed map of pressure.

The app is of limited use to you right now, unfortunately. As I add more features, such as showing the tendency in your local area, the app will become more useful to non-barometer users (and eventually I'll open it up to 2.x phones as well). My main goal is to provide you with more accurate, short-term and personalized weather forecasts. I'll be sure to let you know when I can do that!

So, I do very much appreciate your interest but there's little I can offer you right now.

From the user's phone, we send:

  • latitude

  • longitude

  • time

  • atmospheric pressure

  • hashed unique id

From the server to the phone, we send all kinds of data depending on what the user asks for.

Principally, it's various combinations of sets of the above data. So, when casually looking at the map, we send everything that matches (visible latitude and longitude area, submitted within N hours), where N is presently 7 days but will decrease as more users join.

If a user taps on an icon on the map, they see the pressure history for that user (not GPS history!!) shown on a time graph going back 7 days.

If the user requests information about themselves, we send them their graph along with basic metrics regarding their data (X data submissions today, Y submissions total, etc).

Hope that helps!

Excellent question. I have a Xoom (also with a barometer) and have not noticed any issues. I submit every 10 minutes, and the app never shows up in my Battery settings. Additionally, pressureNET's UI/graphics designer has a Galaxy Nexus and does not see any significant usage either.

However, the Note is very new to us. We don't have a test reference device and our users on the Note haven't had pressureNET long enough to tell us. I would bet that the usage is minimal and your battery life should be fine, but we'll have to see!

Well, I don't know how GPS works. I'm in this for the weather, not the GPS. However, here's what I understand:

GPS alone is slow (sometimes taking a couple of minutes to get a position lock). In order to speed it up, phones use cell tower triangulation and WiFi hotspot knowledge in order to estimate latitude and longitude. Giving these estimates along with a request for an accurate location speeds up the process.

However, GPS runs in all three dimensions and also handles altitude. Without an altitude estimate, the satellites must do all the work manually without a clue as to where the user might be. Atmospheric pressure varies about 1 mb per 8m in altitude change, and varies about 20-30 mbar between weather events. This is enough to hint about altitude, and therefore speed up GPS. So I'm told.

[–]cryptoz 12 points13 points ago

Yes, you do! :D Have a look at the "data inputs" section on the right of the wikipedia page

A few Google employees have said that the barometer is there to speed up GPS calculations as this gives the satellites a hint of your altitude.

NDP broadens support into Tory turf, poll shows - The Globe and Mail by Troll_Dadin canada

[–]cryptoz 2 points3 points ago

there is nothing changed about the makeup of the house due to polls.

Well, of course. I would never suggest otherwise. But there's a lot more to "the current political climate" (your words!) than just who is sitting in those particular seats. The "climate" is understood to be the topics of their discussion, not merely which party they represent (could you accurately describe the entire political climate of Canada merely by listing out MP's names and party affiliations? No.)

At this point it looks like I'm nit-picking, but this stuff matters.

The general political climate of Canada has been changing over the last year.

Colombia passes 1st draft of drug crop legalization bill: 'The initiative calls for the decriminalization of growing plants such as coca, marijuana and opium poppies in the country.' by maxwellhillin worldnews

A lot more people died from car crashes in 2001 than terrorist attacks, but we don't mention those people every time we talk about 9/11.

That violence expands far beyond the drug trade is very sad, but I think it's understood that when hillkiwi says "The big thing is ending the violence" we can assume "The big thing is ending the violence [relating to the drug trade]" as that's what the article is about.
